Home People Courses Graduate ... Division of the Social Sciences From the very beginning, the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago has been a pioneer in the development of social scientific understandings of government and politics. Harold Gosnell, Harold Lasswell, Grant McConnell, Duncan MacRae, Charles Merriam, Hans Morgenthau, Herbert Storing, Leo Strauss, Leonard White, and Quincy Wright all taught at Chicago. Gabriel Almond, V.O. Key, Harold Lasswell, Robert Martin, Herman Pritchett, David Truman, and Herbert Simon the only political scientist ever awarded a Nobel Prize for his intellectual achievements all received their doctorates from Chicago. "The Chicago department was the cutting edge of development of the field of political science," Pritchett recalled of his days as a graduate student. "The students who were graduate students when I was became the leaders of the profession." Much has changed at Chicago since Pritchett studied here, but fortunately the most important things have not. The University of Chicago and its Political Science Department have maintained the unabashed intellectualism, the disregard for disciplinary and subdisciplinary boundaries, the commitment to diversity of approach and method, and the pure appreciation of fine scholarship that have always been the distinguishing features of this institution. We the members of the department believe that Chicago is the most exciting and challenging university in the world. We hope you will come see for yourself.

Welcome
Welcome to the Department of Political Science. Political Science is the systematic study of how political values, both positive and negative, are allocated among individuals, groups, socio-economic classes, regions, and nation-states. The program thus equips students with analytical tools to understand the complex political issues and relationships of the contemporary era. The Department offers a B.A. and a combination M.A./ Ph.D. in Political Science, and it also works closely with interdisciplinary units at Brown with overlapping interests, including the Taubman Center, the Watson Institute, Urban Studies, Latin American Studies, Africana Studies, and Development Studies. It thus contributes to the intellectual vitality of Brown extending well beyond the formal bounds of the political science discipline.

HOME PEOPLE ... MEDIA Welcome The University of Wisconsin political science department is one of the nation’s oldest and most respected programs. Our department is highly ranked in national surveys, and our award-winning faculty are known for innovative research on the discipline’s most current and important questions. Our dedication to teaching is also apparent: we are one of the largest majors on campus, with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate instruction.   Our Department is large and intellectually diverse, and we have never had a ruling theoretical or methodological orthodoxy. Some of our faculty apply the most sophisticated state-of-the-art statistical methods to models of political behavior and international conflicts. Others produce subtle and finely nuanced qualitative studies of political culture. We have strong ties to interdisciplinary centers around campus. The department is widely known for its collegiality, and respect for a broad range of approaches to the study of politics. This atmosphere of tolerance, rigor, and methodological breadth sets the tone for graduate study here. We are also committed to the “Wisconsin Idea,” the longstanding tradition of contributing to public service beyond the university’s borders. The UW is one of the world’s most prestigious and respected universities, and Madison is consistently rated as one of the country’s best places to live For graduate students, a UW-Madison Ph.D. is a qualification that has high standing, an important advantage when you look for a job.
