Political scientists study the allocation and transfer of power in decision-making, the roles and systems of governance including governments and international organizations, political behavior and public policies. They measure the success of governance and specific policies by examining many factors, including stability, justice, material wealth, and peace. Some political scientists seek to advance positive theses by analyzing politics. Others advance normative theses, by making specific policy recommendations.

What this handout is about
This handout will help you to recognize and to follow writing practices and standards in political science. The first step toward accomplishing this goal is to develop a basic understanding of political science and the kind of work political scientists do.
Defining politics and political science
  • American politics examines political behavior and institutions in the United States. Comparative politics analyzes and compares political systems within and across different geographic regions. International relations investigates relations among nation states and the activities of international. organizations such as the United Nations, the World Bank, and NATO as well as international actors such as terrorists, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multi-national corporations (MNCs). Political theory analyzes fundamental political concepts such as power and democracy and fundamental questions such as, "How should the individual and the state relate?".

The Political Science Department was formally established in 1955, within what was then the Department of Economics and Social Science, as part of a broad effort to develop research and training at MIT in the social sciences. The nucleus of a Political Science faculty had already been formed within the Center for International Studies, a pioneering, interdisciplinary research center working on American foreign policy and security issues, economic and political development in the Third World, Communist societies, and international communication. By 1958, a Ph.D. in political science had been authorized. Political Science became an independent department in 1965, offering an undergraduate major and a Master's degree, as well as the Ph.D.

Welcome to UCLA Political Science Department
by carolinetam last modified In 2008 the Department of Political Science celebrates eighty-eight years of teaching, research and public service within one of the nation's finest universities. Instruction in Political Science began on September 14, 1920 with a staff of one assistant professor, Dr. Charles E. Martin, offering three year-long courses (Comparative Government, U.S. Foreign Policy, and International Law). Today the department is among the best in the country. The most recent ranking by the highly respected National Research Council ranks us nationally in the top ten. Among the department's many strengths, we have gained notable distinction in political economy, comparative politics including the politics of developing nations, and political theory.

Students of political science examine the theory and practice of government and politics. They acquire knowledge of political institutions and processes and learn to think critically about public policies and their consequences. They learn how to evaluate individual, group, and mass behavior in political settings. Because of their understanding and interest in political systems, students who earn degrees in political science enter such career fields as government service, law, business, journalism, politics, public policy analysis, and education.
