Innovative research and leadership in education and outreach are hallmarks of faculty, staff, and students of our department.
RESEARCH
Our faculty range from basic to applied scientists who bring a connection between findings associated with the smallest molecule and state-wide epidemics of disease or invasive plants. Molecular genomics of plant/pathogen interactions, physiology of herbicide resistance, and characterization of plant molecular response to abiotic stresses are a few of the research endeavors of our faculty.
EXTENSION
Engagement is not just about reaching people with a message, but in changing or improving their lives through adoption of that message. In order to disseminate research results and train practitioners, our extension faculty present hundreds of talks and seminars each year, post informative articles in local, state, and national magazines, and fill thousands of questions through email, phone, and personal contact. Our diagnostic labs provide expert advice to stakeholders across the Commonwealth.

The Department of Plant Pathology, Physiology and Weed Science , unlike many others, addresses the teaching, research and extension needs of three major subject matter disciplines: plant pathology, plant physiology, and weed science. All major commodity areas are addressed including agronomic crops, forest trees, and horticultural plants.
    Graduate Program
Graduate students in the Department of Plant Pathology, Physiology and Weed Science may choose from three program areas, a M.S. or Ph.D. in Plant Pathology, a M.S. or Ph.D. in Plant Physiology and Weed Science or a non-thesis M.S. degree in the general area of plant protection.
    Research
Research within the Department is being conducted in the following areas: plant pathology: the study and management of plant disease, and plant pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes); plant physiology and molecular biology of plants: the study of plant growth and development, function and response to environmental stresses, and weed science: the study of weed biology, physiology, ecology, and management.
    Extension
Extension programs within the department are conducted to effectively, economically, and environmentally responsibly control diseases and weeds in the production agronomic crops, horticultural crops, turf and grazing lands within the Commonwealth of Virginia. These programs are conducted from the main campus as well as from the Agricultural Experiment Stations throughout the Commonwealth.

Plant Molecular Biology and Physiology
Overview
Faculty in plant molecular biology and physiology are exploring the genetic and molecular basis of important plant traits such as seed composition, disease resistance, stress tolerance, and mineral nutrition. In studying the cellular processes that control these traits, we seek to generate both basic scientific knowledge and new strategies for crop improvement. The diverse interests of the faculty allow students to gain a broad perspective of modern plant biology and biotechnology research. An active weekly seminar series provides a focal point for participants in this program. In addition to plant molecular biology and plant physiology, core disciplines covered by this group include molecular genetics, cytogenetics, microbial genetics and physiology, plant biochemistry, plant transformation/tissue culture, plant genomics, and genetic engineering. Research is supported by federal granting agencies, state and regional consortia, producer and consumer groups, and a variety of industrial sponsors. Opportunities frequently arise to interact with colleagues from other academic, governmental, and industrial institutions in the U.S. and abroad.
