Plant Biology for Non-science Majors
SPRING 2008 Welcome to Biosciences 124, a three-credit course in plant biology specifically designed for the non-science student. The goals and objects of the course are:
  • To gain a basic understanding of the processes through which plants function;
  • To develop concepts concerning the factors leading to the great diversity among plants and the need to maintain this diversity;
  • To understand the complex role of plants in the environment and in our society in order to make informed decisions The course has CORE approval in the science/math area ONLY as a lab science when taken in conjunction with BSCI 125 (Laboratory in Plant Biology, 1 credit hour).

    Welcome to BMC Plant Biology published by BioMed Central BMC Plant Biology is an open access journal publishing original peer-reviewed research articles in all aspects of cellular, tissue-level, organismal, functional and developmental aspects of plants. BMC Plant Biology (ISSN 1471-2229) is indexed/tracked/covered by PubMed, MEDLINE, BIOSIS, CAS, Scopus, Thomson Scientific (ISI) and Google Scholar.
    Plastid genome retained in parasitic plants
    BMC Plant Biology Parasitic Cuscuta species have surprisingly retained genes involved in photosynthesis, unlike the parasitic plant Epifagus which lost these genes, suggesting that selection on RuBisCo and photosystems is the primary reason for maintaining the plastid genome in Cuscuta.
    Arabidopsis genome size variation
    BMC Plant Biology Variation in heterochromatic repeat arrays across geographically separate populations of Arabidopsis could account for up to 50% of the variance in genome size among accessions, a finding with implications for estimating and validating genome sizes.
