Ancient Egyptians calculated the area of a circle by the following formula (where d is the diameter of the circle): This yields an approximate value of 3.1605 for pi. Beginning with a hexagon, he worked all the way up to a ploygon with 96 sides! Archimedes's method for approximating the value of pi.

The marvelous mysteries of this number could be probed forever, but we will limit ourselves to some carols you can sing on our numbers own special day, perhaps even at Pi o'clock that afternoon. These Pi Day songs were written by LaVern Christianson, when he was a math teacher at Windom Area High School, Windom, MN, USA, with some help from his colleagues. They have been sung by his classes, and by the classes of other math teachers in Windom for several years now. Notes on Pi (
Pi, which is denoted by the Greek letter , is the most famous ratio in mathematics, and is one of the most ancient numbers known to humanity. Pi is approximately 3.14 - the number of times that a circle's diameter will fit around the circle. Pi goes on forever, and can't be calculated to perfect precision: 3.1415926535897932384626433832795028841971693993751.... This is known as the decimal expansion of pi. No apparent pattern emerges in the succession of digits - a predestined yet unfathomable code. They do not repeat periodically, seemingly to pop up by blind chance, lacking any perceivable order, rule, reason, or design - "random" integers, ad infinitum. In 1991, the Chudnovsky brothers in New York, using their computer, m zero , calculated pi to two billion two hundred sixty million three hundred twenty one thousand three hundred sixty three digits (2,260,321,363). They halted the program that summer. Pi has had various names through the ages, and all of them are either words or abstract symbols, since pi is a number that can't be shown completely and exactly in any finite form of representation. Pi is a transcendental number. A transcendental number is a number but can't be expressed in any finite series of either arithmetical or algebraic operations. Pi slips away from all rational methods to locate it. It is indescribable and can't be found. Ferdinand Lindemann, a German mathematician, proved the transcendence of pi in 1882.

Pi Day Pi Links Since April 13, 2002 Pi Day March 14th...Celebrate the Circle, Pi and the imagination and creativity of our students! Purpose: Pi Day is a day to celebrate mathematics in your school. It gives us the perfect springboard to allow our students to have fun while investigating mathematics concepts, being creative and even a little silly. If you have any ideas email them to me. I will eventually be attaching some of the materials to each activity so you can click onto it for more ideas. Pi Day Activities! Name That Circle! (9th -11th Grade) Students are shown a graph of a circle and the student that can correctly give it's equation wins! You can run it as a team competition or one on one. Be certain to go over the general equation of a circle first. For grade 9 or students who have not studied this keep all circles in the first quadrant. Examples Pi Digit Distribution (Elementary - HS) The younger students can look at the first 50 or 100 digits of pi and make a bar graph of the frequency of each digit. (How many times does appear?) Students enjoy this rich data source for bar graphs. HS students find the mean of the first 100 digits (use scientific calculators/graphing calculators) Create circle graphs based on the digits -excellent use of protractors, fractions, decimals and angles if done by hand. just in case it's helpful to anyone. If it doesn't make sense, send me a
note.
What is Pi?
This is a cool lesson. Basically, you just need a collection of jar
lids, of varying sizes, some string, scissors, rulers, and calculators. I
also use chart paper to post and analyze the data. I have the students work in pairs. They each gather a few jar lids (you could even limit it to one). The more lids you have them measure, the larger the sampling size (another cool concept), and the more accurate the results. Then, I ask them to respond in their logs to the follow questions: What is pi? Tell me everything you know. Then we share their thoughts at this point. Then, I give them these directions for each jar lid. I caution them to be as accurate as possible. 1. cut a piece of string equal to the circumference of your lid 2. cut a piece of string equal to the diameter of your string
