A magnet levitating above a high-temperature superconductor demonstrates the Meissner effect Physics is the science of matter and its motion as well as space and time — the science that deals with concepts such as force energy mass , and charge . Physics is an experimental science , and it is the objective of physicists to understand how the natural world works. For the etymology of the word physics , see physis Physics is one of the oldest academic disciplines and through its modern subfield of astronomy , it may be the oldest of all. Although these sciences are seen as distinct today, natural philosophy chemistry mathematics and biology are all "branches" of physics. During the last two millennia, these sciences became more distinct; physics emerged as a modern science in the 17th century. Even though these disciplines are now generally distinct the boundaries between them remain fluid and sometimes difficult to distinguish.

An electron (bright green) has just scattered from a nucleus and created a pion (green-skinned particle). This pion's quarks are so tightly packed that they nearly cancel each other's color charge, allowing the pion to slip through the nucleus without interacting, an effect now seen at the lowest possible energies.

From those pioneering days and throughout the Department's long and illustrious history, its faculty and students have been engaged in groundbreaking research and standard-setting instruction, contributing importantly to Harvard's reputation as one of the premier institutions of higher learning in the world. Among Harvard's 43 Nobel laureates, 10 are or were physics faculty members. Today, the latest generation of Harvard physicists continues to bring new insights into the exploration of fundamental problems involving physics at all length scales, and to provide outstanding and innovative educational opportunities to the many talented men and women who enroll in Harvard's flexible undergraduate and graduate programs.

Spin Hall effect observed in photons, too
Onur Hosten and Paul Kwiat According to Hosten, "the effect is the photonic version of the spin Hall effect in electronic systems, indicating the universality of the effect, even for particles of different nature." The researchers believe that the spin Hall effect might be used to manipulate photonic angular momentum states, while their new measurement technique holds promise for precision metrology. Click on the image to view an animation of the effect. A paper reporting these findings was published online in Sciencexpress on January 10.
