Forensic Anthropology
By definition, the word forensic comes from the Latin word "forensic," meaning "to the forum." The forum was the basis of Roman law and was a place of public discussion and debate pertinent to the law.
Forensic anthropology is the application of the science of physical anthropology to the legal process.
The identification of skeletal, badly decomposed, or otherwise unidentified human remains is important for both legal and humanitarian reasons. Forensic anthropologists apply standard scientific techniques developed in physical anthropology to identify human remains, and to assist in the detection of crime. Forensic anthropologists frequently work in conjunction with forensic pathologists, odontologists, and homicide investigators to identify a decedent, discover evidence of foul play, and/or the postmortem interval. In addition to assisting in locating and recovering suspicious remains, forensic anthropologists work to suggest the age, sex, ancestry, stature, and unique features of a decedent from the skeleton.
The Challenge of Forensic Anthropology Often presented with few clues and badly decomposed remains, the forensic anthropologist attempts to piece together a puzzle of indicators, evidence and testimony to answer the following basic questions:

4.9. THE EVIDENCE FROM PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY 4.9.1. Continuity between castes
Half a century ago, Dr. Ambedkar surveyed the existing data on the physical anthropology of the different castes in his book The Untouchables . He found that the received wisdom of a racial basis of caste was not supported by the data, e.g.: “The table for Bengal shows that the Chandal who stands sixth in the scheme of social precedence and whose touch pollutes, is not much differentiated from the Brahmin (…) In Bombay the Deshastha Brahmin bears a closer affinity to the Son-Koli, a fisherman caste, than to his own compeer, the Chitpavan Brahmin. The Mahar, the Untouchable of the Maratha region, comes next together with the Kunbi, the peasant. They follow in order the Shenvi Brahmin, the Nagar Brahmin and the high-caste Maratha. These results (…) mean that there is no correspondence between social gradation and physical differentiation in Bombay.” A remarkable case of differentiation in skull and nose indexes, noted by Dr. Ambedkar, was found to exist between the Brahmin and the (untouchable) Chamar of Uttar Pradesh.

University of Southern California
Coursework for the program is a mixture of biological anthropology classes and seminars, taught mainly by Professor Stanford, and required graduate courses taken with the sociocultural faculty. Graduate students receive support from fellowships and Teaching Assistantships. We have recently established a field research station in Bwindi-Impenetrable National Park, where Professor Stanford is directing a study of chimpanzees and mountain gorillas. This will be a resource for USC students at some point in the future. Those interested in application materials for graduate study in Biological Anthropology at USC should contact:

Physical Anthropology at the University of Hawai'i
Physical anthropology is one of the four major subfields of anthropology that examines the physical or biological aspects of what it means to be human. Two major areas of concern are how we have evolved and how we vary form each other and from our nearest living relatives, the non-human primates. This field encompasses several different scientific disciplines including evolutionary biology, genetics, primatology, paleoanthropology, human adaptability, human growth, medical anthropology, and human ecology. More applied fields include forensic anthropology, human osteology, and bioarchaeology. Although a biological science, physical anthropology is also a social science because human biology and other aspects of the discipline are studied in the context of human culture and behavior. The Department's current areas of expertise allow training in the fields of human evolution, bioarchaeology, human adaptability, medical anthropology, human ecology, and forensic anthropology at the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA and PhD) levels. Coursework is offered in the theory of physical anthropology, human evolution, skeletal biology, forensic anthropology, human biology, and related areas within the Department. Courses that are relevant to physical anthropology are also given in other departments including anatomy, biology, cell and molecular biology, geography, physiology, and zoology.

HOME ABOUT THE PROJECT HISTORY HUMAN VARIATION ... RESOURCES Science: 1890s-1930s
Eugenics and Physical Anthropology In 1910, Harry H. Laughlin (shown at left measuring individuals) became superintendent of the Eugenics Record Office (ERO) research facility at Cold Spring Harbor, New York. He ardently pursued the goals of the institution and regularly lectured to various groups on eugenics (the science of improving human populations by selective breeding) around the country. Laughlin provided extensive statistical testimony to Congress supporting the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924 and was eventually appointed as an "expert eugenics agent" to the Committee on Immigration and Naturalization.
The worldwide Eugenics movement gained strength in the U.S. at the end of the 1890s, when theories of selective breeding espoused by British anthropologist Francis Galton and his protégé Karl Pearson, gained currency. Connecticut was the first of many states, beginning in 1896, to pass marriage laws with eugenic provisions, prohibiting anyone who was "epileptic, imbecile or feeble-minded" from marrying. The noted American biologist, Charles Davenport, became the director of biological research at a station in Cold Spring Harbor in New York in 1898. Six years later the Carnegie Institute provided the funding for Davenport to create the Station for Experimental Evolution. Then, in 1910, Davenport and Harry H. Laughlin took advantage of their positions at the Eugenics Record Office to promote eugenics.
