    Our Philosophy
Our work is driven by a philosophy on software freedom that aims to spread and bring the benefits of software to all parts of the world. At the core of the Ubuntu Philosophy are these core philosophical ideals:
  • Every computer user should have the freedom to download, run, copy, distribute, study, share, change and improve their software for any purpose, without paying licensing fees. Every computer user should be able to use their software in the language of their choice. Every computer user should be given every opportunity to use software, even if they work under a disability.
  • Our philosophy is reflected in the software we produce and included in our distribution. As a result, the licensing terms of the software we distribute are measured against our philosophy, using the Ubuntu License Policy When you install Ubuntu almost all of the software installed already meets these ideals, and we are working to ensure that every single piece of software you need is available under a license that gives you those freedoms.

with Professor Shelly Kagan

Spring, 2007
There is one thing I can be sure of: I am going to die. But what am I to make of that fact? This course will examine a number of issues that arise once we begin to reflect on our mortality. The possibility that death may not actually be the end is considered. Are we, in some sense, immortal? Would immortality be desirable? Also a clearer notion of what it is to die ...

What is Philosophy?
What is Philosophy? Answered by ... William Thomas
Philosophy studies the fundamental nature of existence, of man, and of man's relationship to existence. … In the realm of cognition, the special sciences are the trees, but philosophy is the soil which makes the forest possible.
Philosophy, Who Needs It (p. 2) A philosophy is a comprehensive system of ideas about human nature and the nature of the reality we live in. It is a guide for living, because the issues it addresses are basic and pervasive, determining the course we take in life and how we treat other people. The topics that philosophy addresses fall into several distinct fields. Among those of fundamental concern are:
  • Metaphysics (the theory of reality). Epistemology (the theory of knowledge) Ethics (the theory of moral values) Politics (the theory of legal rights and government) Aesthetics (the theory of the nature of art)
In Greek, "philosophy" means "love of wisdom." Philosophy is based on rational argument and appeal to facts. The history of the modern sciences begins with philosophical inquiries, and the scientific method of experimentation and proof remains an instance of the general approach that a philosopher tries to bring to a question: one that is logical and rigorous. However, while today the sciences focus on specialized inquiries in restricted domains, the questions addressed by philosophy remain the most general and most basic, the issues that underlie the sciences and stand at the base of a world-view.

GENERAL INFORMATION FACULTY UNDERGRADUATE GRADUATE ... DIRECTORIES
Philosophy Department
Columbia's Philosophy Department has had an illustrious past with figures ranging from John Dewey and Ernest Nagel to Isaac Levi, Arthur Danto, and Sidney Morgenbesser shaping its interests and methods in the discipline. At present it is distinguished by its ecumenical ethos, with advanced research being pursued in the wide swath of subjects in analytical philosophy as well as in the history of Western Philosophy British, American, and from the European continent. Given its distinguished pragmatist heritage, the department - unsurprisingly - does not think of the subject of philosophy as a merely self-standing discipline, but as being continuous with other disciplines (logic, mathematics, physics, biology, psychology and economics on the one hand, and history, literature, law, political science, art, and music on the other). There is much interest too in responding, as philosophers, to pressing political, social, and cultural issues in the immediate as well as global environment.
