The Philosophy of Science is concerned with how science operates, what the goals of science should be, what relationship it should have with the rest of society, the differences between science and other activities, etc. Everything in science has some relationship with the Philosophy of Science and is predicated upon some philosophical position, even though that may be rarely evident. A common disagreement between atheists and theists is whether science can or should address religious issues; atheists argue that no empirical claims are closed to science and that everything should be tested scientifically.
Why Should Atheists Care about the Philosophy of Science?:

The European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA)
It is our pleasure to announce that the European Philosophy of Science Association (EPSA) has been established and was registered in Vienna, Austria. EPSA was brought to life by the recognition that the time was ripe for a forum that would bring together professional philosophers of science and students from the whole of Europe (and the rest of the world) and foster collaboration and exchange of ideas among them.
The general aim of the EPSA is to promote and advance philosophy of science in Europe. It will do this by furthering contacts among philosophers of science in Europe; by ensuring that information relating to philosophy of science in Europe is regularly circulated; by supporting, on the international level, progress in philosophical studies of science; and by promoting the public understanding of science within the learned and educated public.
Membership to EPSA is open to everyone, irrespective of nationality. Every member has the right to vote and to be elected in the Steering Committee of EPSA, which is the governing body of the Association. The first Steering Committee of EPSA has been formed on an ad hoc basis by the ten founders aiming to co-ordinate the activities of EPSA. The first meeting of the General Assembly voted for the officers of the first elected Steering Committee.

Are there kinds of explanation? Do explanations correspond to domains of knowledge? Why do we seek explanations, and what do they accomplish? How central are causes to explanation? The essays draw on work in the history and philosophy of science, the philosophy of mind and language, the development of concepts in children, conceptual change in adults, and reasoning in human and artificial systems. They also introduce emerging perspectives on explanation from computer science, linguistics, and anthropology.

PRINTED RESOURCES The Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences (IMBS) in the School of Social Sciences is a specialized research center where the objective is to facilitate interaction and common research goals among scientists whose purpose is to formulate precisely and test theories of human behavior; this is to be interpreted in a wide sense as manifested by the membership which spans the following areas: anthropology, cognitive science, economics, engineering, logic and the philosophy of science, mathematics, political science, and sociology. Additional faculty come from management science and psychobiology. To describe our focus, consider the fruitful symbiotic relationship that has existed for millennia between mathematics and the physical sciences. A goal of the IMBS is to generate a similar relationship between mathematics and the behavioral and social sciences. With high-power social scientists (several are members of the National Academy) providing insights about the field and working with the mathematicians who are involved, new mathematical approaches to analyze these issues are being developed and new kinds of mathematical questions are being raised.

    http://hpst.stanford.edu/
    About the Program
The Program in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology at Stanford teaches students to examine the sciences, medicine and technology from myriad perspectives, conceptual, historical and social. Our community of scholars includes core faculty and students in History and Philosophy and affiliated members in Classics, Anthropology, English, Political Science, Communication and other disciplines. Together, we draw upon the multiple methods of our disciplines to study the development, functioning, applications and social and cultural engagements of the sciences. Stanford's Program in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology is a collaborative enterprise of the Departments of History and Philosophy. Each department has its own undergraduate and graduate degree programs in this area, but these overlap and interact in several ways. First, because of the interdisciplinary structure of requirements, students who come into the program through each department take courses and work with faculty in the other. This helps to create a single community of students and faculty, as does the colloquium series , which brings everyone together regularly throughout the year. The faculty from the two departments also team-teach core courses in which students do joint coursework, and the graduate students conduct joint activities including an annual conference
