Pharmacology at SIU
Pharmacology is the unified study of properties of biologically active chemicals and living organisms and all aspects of their interactions. It is an important link in medical education and biomedical science. The Department of Pharmacology at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine evolved in July of 1979 from a broad-based, six-year old medical sciences group, resulting in a new emphasis on this discipline. The Department is charged with delivery of the graduate program in pharmacology and the main pharmacology medical student curriculum. Since its inception, this unit has grown substantially in research capability, having acquired both research personnel and substantial extramural funding support. Although it is still relatively young, the Department is highly energetic and rapidly achieving academic excellence.

A Message from the Director The Department is proud of its history. Founded in 1893 by John J. Abel, the "Father of Pharmacology" in the United States, the Johns Hopkins Pharmacology Department's advances over the years have included the first crystals of insulin, the first measurement of a drug level in a human, discovery of both the insulin and opiate receptors, and discovery of a cancer preventive principle in broccoli. Many of these and other key contributions have been made by students pursuing advanced degrees in our Department.

Pharmacology at Yale University has a rich history of achievement and a strong tradition of scholarship. Yale was the site of the first studies and trials of anticancer chemotherapy. The modern era of cancer chemotherapy began when Alfred Gilman and Louis Goodman studied the effects of nitrogen mustard on transplanted lymphosarcoma in mice and then initiated clinical trials in 1942 The department has maintained its position of pre-eminence through the end of the century with the recruitment and development of scientists with international reputations. Careers in Pharmacology
There are a variety of opportunities for those with degrees in pharmacology in addition to teaching and research in academic setting. Pharmaceutical companies and government research agencies have increasing requirements for scienti sts trained in pharmacology for the conduct and management of basic research. As a result, there are extensive employment opportunities for graduates of the program. Recent graduates of this department are now pursuing research that includes not only phar macology but also molecular biology, biochemistry, neurophysiology, oncology, cell biology and medicine.

    MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Welcome to the website of the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto! The Department of Pharmacology is among the oldest and largest in North America, with its official foundations in 1887, at the same time that the Faculty of Medicine was re-established in the University of Toronto. We offer training in pharmacology and toxicology to both undergraduate and graduate students who may subsequently go on to exciting research, regulatory and administrative careers in academic, industrial and healthcare provision settings. Our research laboratories are located not only in the core Department situated in the Medical Sciences Building on the downtown St. George campus, but also within a number of nearby university Departments, Faculties, university-affiliated research institutes and teaching hospitals. This strategic positioning also enables a wealth of potential opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with internationally recognized investigators within one of the largest and densest existing concentrations of biomedical research expertise in North America.

    Department of Pharmacology Overview
Pharmacology involves the discovery of new drugs, the investigation of how drugs work and the use of drugs to probe mechanisms of disease. But pharmacology also involves the elucidation and manipulation of macromolecular structures, the analysis of regulatory mechanisms in cell biology and development, and the translation of this information into clinical research. Thus, the science of pharmacology spans the most fundamental aspects of basic research, through transgenic animal models, to clinical investigation. Pharmacology at Penn addresses all of these issues in an exciting, collegial and interactive environment. University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine

    Research Aims
Members of the Department, associated staff and visiting scientists are all engaged in the investigation of basic questions concerning the interaction of chemical substances with biological systems. Several projects are undertaken in collaboration with other departments in the Faculties of Physiological Sciences and Clinical Medicine. The aim is to develop an understanding of fundamental mechanisms in chemical physiology and pathology, in the action of drugs, and in toxicology.
    Key Research Aims
Areas that have been given priority in the Department include molecular pharmacology, cardiac pharmacology, neuropharmacology, cell signalling,  and pharmacogenetics. In many of these areas the Department plays a leading role in the international pharmacological community. The research of the Department has consistently been given a very high ranking in the Government’s assessments of research in Universities.
