B.S. M.S. Degree Minimum Requirements for Degree: 134 credits Downloadable PDF (PDF 120K) The mission of the petroleum engineering program is to provide its students with quality education and training in the field of petroleum engineering through effective teaching, research and public service, with emphasis on Alaska petroleum resources. Petroleum engineering offers a unique look at the challenging problems confronting the petroleum industry. This program requires an understanding of many disciplines including mathematics, physics, chemistry, geology and engineering science. Courses in petroleum engineering deal with drilling, formation evaluation, production, reservoir engineering, computer simulation and enhanced oil recovery. The curriculum prepares graduates to meet the demands of modern technology while emphasizing, whenever possible, the special problems encountered in Alaska. Located in one of the largest oil-producing states in the nation, the UAF petroleum engineering department offers one of the most modern and challenging degree programs available. The petroleum engineering program educational objectives are:
  • Provide students with a broad knowledge of the principles of petroleum engineering and their application Provide students with the knowledge and skills required to design and analyze petroleum engineering problems, taking into account, safety, environmental and societal impacts.

Biomedical and Health Sciences Chemistry Civil Engineering Environmental Engineering Metallurgical, Mining Engineering Textile and Polymer Science About the field of Petroleum Engineering: Petroleum Engineering involves the removal of oil from natural reservoirs, using supplemental energies once the natural energies that cause oil production have ceased. Students will study geology, geochemistry, geophysics, well logging, well completion, oil and gas production and reservoir development. They will learn about advanced recovery methods, fluid rheologies and phase behavior. Students will also focus on production systems design and optimization. Graduates can enter careers as senior mechanical engineers, senior pipeline engineers, senior refinery process engineers, senior exploitation engineers and more. What do petroleum engineering graduates do?
      • If you go into production, you will be responsible for daily monitoring of production and injection wells and designing remedial treatments to maintain oil and gas production. Production engineers maintain wells that are already drilled and find ways to improve the current production levels and the ultimate oil and gas recovery. If you become a reservoir engineer, you'll be responsible for making long-term decisions and solutions for hydrocarbon production including location of new wells and evaluation of future production. Reservoir engineers determine how much oil exists in a reservoir and how much of it can be recovered. If you go into the area of drilling, you'll supervise the drilling and completion of new wells to produce oil and gas to the surface.

    Program Description
    • The program is offered through both day and evening classes to accommodate full-time and part-time students. It is also possible to combine some day courses with some evening courses or distance delivery courses in order to meet personal schedule requirements. All program participants are required to complete a minimum of 800 hours (50 credits) of coursework and a supervised work practicum of 800 hours (50 credits). Full-time day students normally require two years to complete the program, while part-time evening students generally take more than two years. Credit may be given for relevant work experience for students who work during the day and complete courses in the evening. Credit may also be given for previous relevant work experience, but only up to 50 per cent of the required 800 hours work experience. An increasing number of courses are available for distance delivery and part-time study for working students or those students located outside of the Calgary area. Please see our

    Petroleum Engineering Career Overview
Discovery of natural sources, examination of natural characteristics, and development of modern machinery for extraction and processing—all fall under the scope of petroleum engineers Petroleum engineers are engaged in the globe world for oil and natural gas reservoirs. After they discover there reservoirs, they are involved in working with geologists and other specialists for examining the geologic formation and the nature of the rock containing the reservoir, determining the drilling methods to be used, and monitoring the drilling and production activities. They also work on designing tools and operation procedures in order to gain efficiency in the recovery of oil and gas. Computers are used extensively by petroleum engineers in order to calculate the nest possible method of recovery of petroleum from different reservoirs. Models and designs of drilling and other equipment are also simulated on computers.
Petroleum Engineering Job and Employment Opportunities
In 2002, petroleum engineers were employed in around 14,000 jobs which were mainly concentrated in oil and gas extraction, professional, scientific and technical services, and petroleum refining. Major oil corporations, and innumerable small and independent oil exploration, production, and service companies are the employers for this profession.
