Petroleum engineering
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation search Petroleum engineering is involved in the exploration and production activities of petroleum as an upstream end of the energy sector. Upstream refers to the process of finding and extracting oil, which is usually buried deep beneath the earth's surface, to provide a continuous supply to consumers "downstream". Petroleum engineering covers a wide range of topics, including economics geology geochemistry , geomechanics, geophysics oil drilling , geopolitics, knowledge management, seismology tectonics , thermodynamics, well logging well completion , oil and gas production, reservoir development, and pipelines.

edit Overview
Petroleum engineering has become a technical profession that involves extracting oil in increasingly difficult situations as the "low hanging fruit" of the world's oil fields are found and depleted. Improvements in computer modeling, materials and the application of statistics, probability analysis, and new technologies like horizontal drilling and enhanced oil recovery , have drastically improved the toolbox of the petroleum engineer in recent decades.

Marquez Hall-A vision for the future!!! ... Noble Energy Donates $500,000 Toward New Petroleum Engineering Building Message from Dr. Craig W. Van Kirk In my entire 26 years as PE’s Department Head, I can say in many ways the program is healthier and stronger now than ever, and it is well poised for a significant and positive future. PE’s program is very healthy in many ways. Recruiting for our students is strong, several job offers per student, 100% job placement before graduation, BS starting salaries approaching $70,000 per year, Masters and Ph.D. salaries in the neighborhood of $100,000 per year, with some exceeding that number. This year’s PE senior class size is 40, while our junior class is 70 and our sophomore class is over 100. Our graduate student enrollment of 74 is our largest ever. Our International student enrollment is healthy at both the undergrad and graduate levels, with excellent quality students from around the world.
The long established success and popularity of our PE program continues to attract non-Colorado residents and international students at the highest rates on campus. Also, our global activities continue to not only attract more students, but also more partners, sponsors, and opportunities for joint ventures around the world. For examples: the Abu Dhabi Petroleum Institute (ADPI) continues to prosper; Egypt’s invitation for us to open CSM’s first and only branch campus in Egypt as an open coed international campus is maturing nicely, and even though we don’t have a final agreement yet, we started teaching graduate-level courses in Egypt in 2004.

Petroleum Engineering Overview
The Field Preparation Day In The Life ... Overview Podcast
Petroleum engineers search the world for reservoirs containing oil or natural gas. Once these resources are discovered, petroleum engineers work with geologists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used, and monitor drilling and production operations. They design equipment and processes to achieve the maximum profitable recovery of oil and gas. Petroleum engineers rely heavily on computer models to simulate reservoir performance using different recovery techniques. They also use computer models for simulations of the effects of various drilling options. Because only a small proportion of oil and gas in a reservoir will flow out under natural forces, petroleum engineers develop and use various enhanced recovery methods. These include injecting water, chemicals, gases, or steam into an oil reservoir to force out more of the oil, and computer-controlled drilling or fracturing to connect a larger area of a reservoir to a single well. Because even the best techniques in use today recover only a portion of the oil and gas in a reservoir, petroleum engineers research and develop technology and methods to increase recovery and lower the cost of drilling and production operations. Petroleum Engineering
The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at KU offers the Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in both chemical and petroleum engineering. For students who desire to continue their studies, the department offers the Master of Science (M.S.) degree in either chemical or petroleum engineering as well as the undesignated Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the School of Engineering. The Chemical Engineering program offers undergraduates the opportunity to focus their studies in the environmental, biomedical, or pre-medical options as well as the standard chemical engineering curriculum. A formal curriculum is also available for students who wish to alternate academics and work experience in the Coop program. The primary focus of KU's petroleum engineering program is reservoir engineering . the science of improving the productivity of oil and gas reservoirs. The undergraduate programs in chemical and petroleum engineering provide a foundation that enables a graduate to pursue a professional engineering career. For those who want a deeper academic understanding of these branches of engineering or who plan to work in research or development, graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels are available. The department offers the M.S. degree in the fields of chemical engineering and petroleum engineering. In addition, the Ph.D. degree in the School of Engineering may be earned in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering.

Become a Part of Something Special The Edwy R. Brown Department of Petroleum Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC) of ABET, Inc., a federation of 28 professional and technical societies that is recognized as a U.S. accreditor of college and university programs. We are the 9th largest petroleum engineering program in the United States and the only program at a small, liberal arts college. Our environment allows each student to receive one-on-one help from professors to ensure academic success. Students also have the opportunity to develop professional abilities in the chapter of Society of Petroleum Engineers, an organization that meets regularly and participates in national and regional SPE conferences. Our graduates have enjoyed 100% job placement upon graduation for the past several years, having beenhired full-time by companies such as Chevron, Anadarko, Schlumberger and Energy Corporation of America. And starting salaries for petroleum engineers are the highest of any engineering discipline. Permanent salaries for 2006 were as high as $75,000, with summer internship salaries reaching $5,000 per month.
