etroglyphs are designs pecked into boulders, cliff faces, and other stationary pieces of stone. This type of artwork is rare in Alaska. The Tlingit of southeast Alaska made similar carvings and there are a few pieces of rock art in western Alaska. In the Kodiak Archipelago, there are at least seven known petroglyph locations which depict human figures, animal forms and geometric designs. These characters are probably from Alutiiq myths or family stories. Archaeologists do not know the precise age of this art form, but suspect that at least some of the images may be up to 2,000 years old, based on their association with ancient village sites. How The Wind Gap Was Formed
Approximately 15 million years ago, a long slender section of sedimentary rock sheared from the earth's crust along parallel fault lines. This up-thrown block, later named the Red Hills, began to inch its way above the surrounding valley floor. At the same time the block was rising, a stream was cutting a path perpendicularly across the ridge. For millions of years the uplifting of the ridge and the down-cutting of the stream remained in equilibrium. Eventually however, the relentless rise of the ridge and the drying of the region's climate combined forces to defeat the stream. The stream disappeared and the valley became a waterless wind gap. Continued erosion by wind and rain have shaped the gap into the pass seen today.
    Parowan Gap Petroglyphs
Several centuries ago Native Americans traveling through the area stopped and pecked designs onto the smooth faces of large boulders found on the east side of the gap. Over the years many of the boulders have been covered with these chiseled figures known as petroglyphs. The petroglyphs here are thought to be the work of several cultural groups and represent a long period of use by Native cultures.

The Sanilac Petroglyphs is a Michigan State Historic Site located in the center of Michigan's Thumb area. Though this site is jointly administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries , the pavilion surrounding the petroglyph area is currently closed to the public. The park is not staffed due to Michigan budget concerns, and the area is fenced in and locked. However, it is possible to get permission to view the petroglyphs if you contact the park manager at Albert E. Sleeper State Park . There may be a use fee involved. Great care must be taken when viewing the petroglyphs not to touch them, walk on them, or harm them in any way. To get to the petroglyphs from the south, take M-53 north to Bay City - Forestville Road, turn right and go past New Greenleaf about 8 miles. Germania Road turns south and a parking lot for the petroglyph trail is almost immediately on the right hand side. If you are coming from the north, the petroglyphs are almost directly south of Bad Axe about ten miles. We visited the site May 31, 2003. One of our interests in visiting the site had to do with whether or not there is any correlation between the carvings on the sandstone at this site and the Soper-Savage artifacts (commonly called "frauds" by many researchers). The Soper-Savage collection is a featured exhibit at the

In Luahiwa, these fragile rock drawings have been spared the erosion of wetter weather. Hawaii's petroglyphs can be found all across the islands, yet few are so well preserved as on Lanai.
These stone markings are the remnants of Hawaiian culture dating back as early as the 15th century. Discover circle patterns, ilio (dogs), bird's heads, warriors, families, or natives on horseback, then imagine the stories that inspired them.
Remember, any contact with the petroglyphs damages them, so great care and respect must be shown here. You may feel the temptation to touch these ancient markings or take rubbings, but refrain from any contact to preserve the petroglyphs for the future.

    http://www.lillianpitt.com/petroglyphs.html
A pervasive theme in Lillian Pitt’s offerings in all media are symbols from ancient sacred petroglyphs found along the Columbia River Gorge-—drawings that were chipped or ground into rock to depict tribal legends, hunting scenes and mysticism. In 1957, rising waters behind The Dalles Dam submerged hundreds of petroglyphs. A few were pried away and stored at the dam, perched against a wall of the fish ladder beneath roosting birds. (Two examples are shown at the right and below, with more here and more history here At last in 2004, 43 petroglyph-covered rocks were moved to Washington's Columbia Hills State Park, a home that matches the awe and wonderment felt for their original site by their creators. The park is indisputably the best place to see petroglyphs in the Northwest. Because of past vandalism, viewing is limited to an escorted tour twice a week. Five alcoves along the 300-foot fence allow viewers to come within 20 feet of the petroglyphs. They depict deer, mountain sheep and the humans who hunt them. They show thunderbirds, owls, fish and a mysterious creature with long flowing tentacles.
    THE HILLSBORO CIVIC CENTER PROJECT:
    "THE RIVERBED"
One of Lillian Pitt's enduring concerns has been to educate the public about the necessity to preserve the Columbia River Gorge's fragile environment and especially to safeguard the ancient petroglyphs found there, considered the premier site of prehistoric art in the Pacific Northwest. Though public access to the sacred sites in the Gorge is restricted, she wanted everyone to have the opportunity to experience these ancient symbols and their power to heal and teach. She was given a priceless opportunity to attain that goal when she and her team were commissioned by the Civic Center of Hillsboro, OR, to recreate a stretch of the Columbia River and surrounding cliffs in a public art project that officially opened in June, 2005.

    About the Ometepe Petroglyph Project
The Ometepe Petroglyph Project is a long term volunteer archaeological field survey of the Maderas half of the Nicaraguan island of Ometepe, the largest island on Lake Nicaragua, conducted by archaeologist Suzanne Baker . In five field seasons an area of 15 square kilometers has been intensively surveyed. Within that area (along the northern slopes of the Maderas volcano) the project has recorded and mapped 73 archaeological sites. Almost 1700 petroglyph panels on 1400 boulders have been photographed, drawn, and cataloged as part of the survey. Lake Nicaragua, with a surface area of 8,264 sq. km, is the largest inland body of water in Central America. Ometepe island, the largest island in the lake, is comprised of two volcanos and a narrow spit of land between. The volcanic activity, through the deposition of volcanic ash, has made the soil of the plains extremely fertile, permitting constant planting without fallowing. The island has probably been inhabited since the Dinarte phase (ca. 2000-500 B. C.), although the evidence for the oldest phase on the island is extremely limited. (Information from

The Three Rivers Petroglyph Site is one of the few locations in the Southwest set aside solely because of its rock art. It is also one of the few sites giving visitors such direct access to petroglyphs. The number and concentration of petroglyphs here make it one of the largest and most interesting petroglyphs sites in the Southwest. More than 21,000 glyphs of birds, humans, animals, fish, insects and plants, as well as numerous geometric and abstract designs are scattered over 50 acres of New Mexico's northern Chihuahuan Desert. The petroglyphs at Three Rivers, dating back to between about 900 and 1400 AD, were created by Jornada Mogollon people who used stone tools to remove the dark patina on the exterior of the rock. A small pueblo ruin is nearby and Sierra Blanca towers above to the east. A detailed petroglyph guide is available at the Three Rivers Petroglyph Site. Activities

    1054 Supernova Petrograph
Dan Greening The Anasazi residents of Chaco Canyon were attentive to the movements of the heavens, that much is clear. The famous Sun Dagger on Fajada Butte in the center of Chaco Canyon is a solar calendar that heralds the winter solstice when a band of sunlight passing through between two slabs intersects the center of a spiral. A square of light floods a notch in the wall of Casa Rinconada's Great Kiva on the summer solstice, and locations marked within the Great Kiva are thought by some to create a simple stellar observatory. There are many similar phenomena throughout Chaco Canyon and San Juan basin to the northwest. Sometimes a correlation suggests a dubious conclusion, another might seem obvious. Regardless of the validity of any particular claim, there is little doubt that the Chacoans cared about what happened above them, because there are so many correlations. If you look through a telescope tonight, in the constellation Taurus, you will see a formation we call the "Crab Nebula." This cloudy, glowing mass comprises about 90% of the remains of a supernova that first appeared here around July 4, 1054.

Excerpted From St. John Off The Beaten Track
By Gerald Singer In the lower section of the Reef Bay valley there is a freshwater pool surrounded by large, smooth rocks. It is fed by a waterfall that cascades down a 40-foot cliff where strangler figs and wild orchids have taken root using cracks and crevices in the rock face as footholds. The pool provides an environment for shrimp, frogs, small fish, dragonflies and hummingbirds, and at night bats zip back and forth attracted to the sweet water. The vegetation is lush and tropical and the ambiance is serene and tranquil. There is an air of magic and spirituality here that undoubtedly inspired previous inhabitants of St. John to carve drawings and symbols into the rocks surrounding the pool. We call these rock carvings the petroglyphs. If you're coming down the Reef Bay Trail from Centerline Road the Petroglyph Trail will head off to your right at a point 1.6 miles from trailhead. Coming up from the sugar mill it is 0.8 miles to the Petroglyph Trail, which will be on your left. From the intersection of the two trails it only requires an easy half-mile walk over flat terrain in order to reach the petroglyphs.
