ROCK ART IN WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEVADA

Click on thumbnail picture below to see full view Honeymoon Hill Petroglyph
Petroglyphs (also called rock art) are carvings or drawings on rocks. Pictographs are painted designs on rocks. Several impressive, but extremely fragile, rock art sites exist in White Pine County. All sites in White Pine County are very difficult to access and require a high-clearance vehicle just to get to hiking distance. Detailed information on the exact locations of these delicate sites can be obtained by contacting the archaeologist at the US Forest Service (702) 289-3031 or the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Offices (702) 289-1800 in Ely, Nevada. These extremely sensitive sites are easily destroyed by touching or applying any foreign substances (water, chalk, aluminum powder, etc.) to them. Please do not touch them in any manner. "Take Nothing But Photographs and Leave Nothing But Footprints" so others may enjoy this wonderful and irreplaceable art too. The easiest Petroglyph site to access is in Jakes Wash, on BLM public lands. This site is called City of Rocks or Honeymoon Hill. There are numerous anthropomorphous (human forms) and geometric designs pecked into the rocks. The location is on a high point which affords a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The high position may indicate that the site was used for calendric and seasonal observations of the suns position on the horizon. Take US 6 about 15 miles south of Ely, turn on a (good weather only) dirt road and proceed about 5 more miles. The site can be found by hiking uphill for about a quarter of a mile.

For many centuries Tamgaly has been used for rituals and ceremonies. Most carvings depict deer and hunting scenes, but there is also a famous Buddha (or Shiva) drawing dated about 8th c. AD. Some of the drawings were renewed in the Middle Ages, and used in ceremonies till the XI th. century AD.
Petroglyphs, as a type of fine art, have appeared on the territory of Kazakhstan since ancient times and have been preserved until present. The many monuments of petroglyphic art that have been discovered during recent years demonstrate the peculiarities of artistic traditions of ancient tribes.
There are currently, fifty discovered monuments in Semirechie, where one can find paintings of petroglyphic art. The most famous Petroglyphs are in the natural boundary Tamgaly, in the valley of the river Koksu, among the Sholak, Kyndyktas, Anrakhai, and Bayan Zhurek mountains. Along with these outstanding sanctuaries, which include several thousand petroglyphic paintings, there are also small groups of with several hundreds or tens of painting Petroglyphs on canyon walls, hills, and burial ground stones.

Lucerne Valley / Barstow Area
by Frank Rodrigue Situated in the Mojave Desert about 30 miles north-east of Lucerne Valley lies a historic wash where Indians once came to leave us reminders of the past. These "rock art" engravings were put here by Native Americans over the past 12,000 years using stone tools. Some believe the rock art was left by the Cahuilla or the Chemehuevi Indian Tribes. We may never know for sure. Over the years the petroglyphs site has been visited by hundreds of people. The BLM is keeping the access roads open, marked and available but the exact location is still somewhat unadvertised to help keep the destructive weekend warriors away. There is unfortunately a part of society that is not content with viewing and observing the beauty and history surrounding us.
The petroglyph visiting rules are quite simple: Only take pictures and leave footprints.
A vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended. 4WD is not necessary. At the entrance there is a clearing with plenty of parking.

A Linguistic Analysis of Some West Virginia Petroglyphs
By Monroe Oppenheimer and Willard Wirtz
The West Virginia Archeologist Volume 41, Number 1, Spring 1989
The March, 1983, issue of Wonderful West Virginia contained a fascinating account of the "Wyoming and Boone County petroglyphs" (Pyle, 1983; Gallagher, 1983; Hyde, 1983; Fell, 1983). Markings on the stone walls of two rock shelters in the southern part of the state had been interpreted by Dr. Barry Fell, described as an emeritus professor at Harvard and "America's leading ancient language expert," as being in old Irish script called Celtic Ogam (or Ogham) and as dating back to the 6th or 8th Century A.D. They were interpreted by Dr. Fell as carrying, in extensive detail, the story of Christ's nativity.
The momentous implications of the reported discovery were obvious. It meant that somebody had come to this country from Europe, carrying Christianity's message, seven or eight centuries before Columbus.
Recognizing that some pieces of the picture needed further development, the 1983 Wonderful West Virginia articles promised that additional information would follow. Three years later, a brief follow-up story in the June, 1986, issue reported that the "Petroglyph Case Remains Open." This second article included none of the further information that the first report had referred to. It recognized that the earlier account had created "considerable controversy," and said that "Assembled Evidence Strengthens Petroglyph Interpretation Case," but left the reader to decide for himself if the evidence is plausible, regardless of the dissension of professionals and avocational archaeologists in the state.

Rock carvings and paintings are found throughout the inhabited world. In British Columbia alone, over 500 examples of this type of archaeological site have been recorded, more than in any other province in Canada.
The rock carvings, or petroglyphs , were made by the aboriginal people of the region by pecking and abrading selected rock surfaces with stone tools.
The paintings, or pictographs , were applied to rock with brushes, sticks or fingers. Pigments were usually made from powdered minerals (ochres); haematite and limonite.
A binder of animal fat or fish eggs may have been added to make them adhere to the rock surface. The bonding ability and composition of the pigment is such that it easily outlasts the commercial paints of today. Over 90 per cent of all rock paintings are red.
Locations for rock art carvings and paintings were carefully chosen. They were places of power or mystery; places where the forces of nature were believed to be especially strong. They are marked by unusual natural features such as waterfalls, rock formations or caves. Nearly all sites are near water and may also be near old village sites or along trails or ancient trade routes.

These people were hunters. And they not only left us pictures, but also complete scenes of themselves in action. So what's this petroglyph from the Zalavruga site, on the southern coast of the White Sea, show us? Well for one thing, it may be the oldest picture in the world showing people skiing. It is also a hunt. The animal is a moose. This art becomes much more intriguing and complex when you look at it from their point of view. For instance, they were not only killing animals but also taking the body of one of their gods into themselves.
Here's a rubbing from a site discovered last year by two young Russian archeologists at the Kanozero site, located above the Arctic Circle. It shows a couple, the woman is pregant, the man is a hunter and clearly proud of his fertility.

This is a whale boat from Zalavruga on the White Sea. The people are carved in detail, which means they are distinguished as individuals. Each person onboard this boat would have recognized himself or herself from the glyph. I believe the second figure is likely a woman. Judge for yourself. Some people believe that this is the oldest picture of a whale in the entire world. 2000

The area is called Karelia. The Karelians were a Finnish/Hungarian race of people who originated in the Northern Urals, migrating into Western Russia in waves starting about 6000 years ago. From there, individual tribes scatter north. 2000

HAWAIIAN PETROGLYPHS
Na Ki'i Pohaku (Hawaiian Petroglyphs) is an early Hawaiian art expression carved in rock. Because of the nature of ancient Hawaiian life, it is difficult to interpert these petroglyphs. They can be legends, myths, art expression or everyday life in general. Petroglyphs are still visible today on various parts of the islands. The Rainbowman on Oahu, the Surfer, Paddler and Dancer on Hawaii. The choice of sandstone instead of lava rock (of which most Petroglyphs are on), came about because of the ancient Hawaiian legend that you will receive bad luck with the removal of any lava rock. Many people have experienced problems until they replace the rock back where it belonged. Due to superstition, lava rock couldn't be used, but the idea of Hawaiian Petroglyphs etched in rock would be wonderful to have, so we have decided to try them in sandstone like the southwest American Indian, Hieroglyphs.

The Deer Valley Rock Art Center has been open to the public since 1994, but I never knew it existed until the Phoenix Pride Commission named the Rock Art Center to the list of Phoenix Points of Pride in May 2000. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places . The Deer Valley Rock Art Center is operated by Arizona State University . The land is leased to the University by the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, which owns the land. The building housing the indoor exhibits was built by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the agreement arising from the construction of the Adobe Dam in 1980.

Those which are incised, scratched, rubbed, or pecked into the surface of the rock are called petroglyphs. Painted designs are referred to as pictographs.
    http://www.media.utah.edu/UHE/r/ROCKART.html
ROCK ART IN UTAH Utah rock art was described in National Geographic magazine as a "wilderness Louvre," a world-class outdoor art museum. The quality and quantity of Utah's prehistoric rock art is unmatched anywhere. From the mummy-shaped human figures of heroic proportions in the Great Gallery of Horseshoe Canyon to the incised stones from Hogup Cave, Utah's rock art is beautiful and varied. In its most basic definition, rock art is any design on stone. Those which are incised, scratched, rubbed, or pecked into the surface of the rock are called petroglyphs. Painted designs are referred to as pictographs. Occasionally the word petrograph is used as a generic term for both pecked and painted designs. Other terms used for rock art, such as picture writing or Indian writing, attach a significance to the design that may or may not have been intended by its creator. Who created the rock art? While it is speculated that a petroglyph in the Moab area and a pictograph in Ferron Canyonboth of which may represent mammothsmay represent work by Ice Age artists more than 10,000 years ago, the earliest rock art can be more safely attributed to the Archaic Culture of more recent times. Hunters and gatherers who were successful at harvesting a wide variety of plants and small game animals in various ecological niches, these people were probably responsible for the red-painted, mummy-shaped figures in eastern Utah known as the Barrier Canyon style as well as other (primarily abstract) rock art images found throughout the state. Scholars generally agree that the earliest rock art is at least 2,000 years old.

The lower left photo shows men pointing to where the etchings are located. The park literature attributes the petroglyphs to the Anasazi who inhabited the area from approximately A.D. 400 to A.D. 1300. Can you see the dino? A book on Indian rock art sold at the park visitors center says, "There is a petroglyph in Natural Bridges National Monument that bears a startling resemblance to a dinosaur, specifically a Brontosaurus, with a long tail and neck, small head and all." (Prehistoric Indians, Barnes and Pendleton, 1995, p.201) The desert varnish, which indicates age, is especially heavy over this section.

    The Petroglyphs of Pusharo
Peru's Amazonian Riddle by Gregory Deyermenjian, Director, New England Chapter of The Explorers Club Fig.1: Photo of the author] Petroglyphs are engravings made on a rock surface. By pecking with a hammerstone, or cutting with a sharp stone knife, native South American peoples who were otherwise without written symbols utilized geometric forms in graphic expression. South American petroglyphs are divided geographically and stylistically into four separate groups: Patagonian; Ando-Peruvian; Colombian-Venezuelan; and Brazilian (Boman 1908; Rouse 1949). Patagonian petroglyphs consist of simplistic figures such as footprints of birds, animals, human beings, human hands, and concentric circles and squares. Those of the Colombian-Venezuelan group include human or animal figures, always without details of clothing or ornament, with those from the eastern slopes of the Colombian more resembling Amazonian types, showing human faces and possible supernatural beings emphasized through simple, repeated curvilinear or swirling. Brazilian petroglyphs feature schematic representations of fish, animals, and human beings, as well as common designs of faces, circles, and the spiral (fig.2). Ando-Peruvian petroglyphs, by contrast, employ the most complicated designs of all, with frequent representations of birds, animals (including felines and llamas), and human beings. The gigantic Nazca figures in southern Peru represent the Ando-Peruvian style.
