When the Petroglyph Monument Protection Coalition formed in 1996, the Petroglyph controversy was primarily seen as an environmental issue. Young Native Americans and People of Color came together to bring to light the spiritual significance of the area. We were determined to let people know that this was not just an environmental issue, but also an issue about our Religious Freedom.

THE PIPESTONE PETROGLYPHS
Thomas D. Thiessen National Park Service The "Three Maidens" Pipestone National Monument, bordering the town of Pipestone in southwestern Minnesota, preserves and interprets the historic catlinite quarries which, for hundreds of years, served as the source of a soft red claystone that Native Americans carved into pipes and other objects. These famous quarries have often been described in travelers' accounts since 1832, when they were first known to have been visited by non-Native Americans (Prescott 1852; Parker 1966). Almost as famous as the quarries are the petroglyphs carved into Sioux Quartzite outcrops near the quarry pits. Many of these petroglyphs were observed, commented on, and recorded at various times during the nineteenth century by visitors drawn to the nearby quarries. A large number originally were carved into the quartzite bedrock that underlies a glacially deposited group of large granite boulders called the Three Maidens. At two other locations within the Monument, Native American petroglyphs have been recorded within the past decade. It is possible, even likely, that additional petroglyphs remain undiscovered within the Monument's boundary. Catlin's painting of Pipestone - Three Maidens are on the upper right.

Winter Home of Kawaiisu Indians ROCK ART Rock art comes in two varieties, petroglyphs and pictographs. The difference between the two types is the manner in which they were made. Petroglyphs were pecked into the surface of the rock. Pictographs were painted on the rock. A coating of dark "desert varnish" on lighter sandstone provides the perfect medium for petroglyphs, which are the most common of the two types of rock art found. Rock art is both enduring and fragile. It has lasted hundreds of years; yet many panels have been recently defaced by graffiti. Climbing on panels can also damage the art, as can attempts to embellish the petroglyphs for photographic purposes. These practices are destructive and should not be done. JEFFERS PETROGLYPHS
Cottonwood County, Minnesota In the midst of a vast prairie in southwestern Minnesota massive ridges of very ancient rock rise up to lie just below the surface of the ground. On this watershed divide, among the tall grass, there are a few places where the underlying rock breaks through to the surface. Buried for millennia, the stone preserves evidence of ancient watercourses in the rippled surfaces of sand that were slowly solidified by heat and pressure. Gradually thrust to the surface and rough-polished by glacial ice, a "canvas" was created that became a medium for the signs and symbols of ancient American Indians. Imprinted in this scoured rock face are fleeting images that bear testimony to the generations of earlier inhabitants of this land. These forms are found carved in a score of locations, however one of these places surpasses all the rest by virtue of the abundance and diversity present there. General Information
There are perhaps countless pictographs (painting on rock) and petroglyphs (pecking on rock) in Canyon de Chelly. The history of peoples in the canyon goes back thousands of years and the images remain from each one of these cultures. Doing a tour on the canyon floor with a Navajo guide will be the best way to see a few of the well protected images. The stories behind some of the pictographs are even more amazing. We selected only a few photos from our trip (we have over a hundred of pictographs) to share on the site. A site in itself could be dedicated to the art in the canyon, but no photo can give the feeling you get when you see them in real life. ...
Pictographs Near Standing Cow Ruin
The pictographs near Standing Cow Ruin tell a lot of stories about the history of the Navajo and the European Americans. The Navajo pictographs are distinct from other pictographs by their wide range of colors and details. They are very beautiful but can tell sad stories of invasions and lives lost. The photo above shows a beautiful canvas of people on horses. It helps to set the time frame because the horses came with the Spanish. We do not want to tell the story here because it is a story that should be told by one of the Navajos in the canyon.

Today, the First Nations people of Ontario call the carvings Kinomagewapkong , meaning "the rocks that teach."

If you have knowledge of any petroglyphs other than the obvious ones in the parks and the ones seen on this site, please e mail location to me: ltmtnele [sign for at] yahoo.com. Petroglyphs are ancient rock carvings. What they actually mean is anyone's guess. They can be found by running your fingers over the surface of the boulders and feeling for the depressions. Sometimes you can see them if the shadows are just right; other times they can be right in front of but yet, invisible. One I know of, I can only see faint impressions in the vertical rock face overlooking a pool when I am treading water in the pool. But when I get to the rock face itself (I have to hang over the cliff with a rope) I cannot find it.
Petroglyphs are normally found around water. The old timers allege that when the Fajardo yacht club was developed, thousands of them were destroyed. What we see now are just the ones that have survived. To find the petroglyphs, look around pools of water. Another good place to look is a section of land between two small streams. It has been said that the indigenous Indians thought that water was magical.

Native American petroglyphs and pictographs
Petroglyphs and pictographs are the oldest and most widespread forms of creative and cultural expression in the Native American Southwest.
Petroglyphs, or carved rock designs, and pictographs, or painted rock designs, are known by the general term rock art. In what are now the states of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Colorado, prehistoric hunter-gatherer Indians began to decorate canyon walls, rock shelters, and boulders with rock art several thousand years ago. Navajos, Apaches, Pueblo Indians, and even Spanish soldiers and settlers continued to create rock art over the centuries. They probably did it for many reasons: aesthetic, magical, religious, historical, astronomical, as a part of hunting ritualsor a combination of the above. Archaeologists believe that rock art is much more than meaningless doodles. And contrary to popular belief, it was not created by the inhabitants of sunken, mythical continents, it does not represent maps to buried treasure or depict extraterrestrials, and it was not intended as a form of writing. Rock art does provide a means of understanding the sacred as well as the mundane in prehistoric and historic Indian culture. It is a way of recognizing cultural relationships and the patterns of communication and commerce among individuals and tribes. Changes in rock-art styles often reflect new ideologies and religious practices. However, the quality of the rock art and the level of sophistication of the culture it belongs to are not necessarily related.

Brief Description
Set around the lush Tamgaly Gorge, amidst the vast, arid Chu-Ili mountains, is a remarkable concentration of some 5,000 petroglyphs (rock carvings) dating from the second half of the second millennium BC to the beginning of the 20th century. Distributed among 48 complexes with associated settlements and burial grounds, they are testimonies to the husbandry, social organization and rituals of pastoral peoples. Human settlements in the site are often multilayered and show occupation through the ages. A huge number of ancient tombs are also to be found including stone enclosures with boxes and cists (middle and late Bronze Age), and mounds (kurgans) of stone and earth (early Iron Age to the present). The central canyon contains the densest concentration of engravings and what are believed to be altars, suggesting that these places were used for sacrificial offerings.
