Home-Scale Permaculture by Toby Hemenway Chelsea Green, 2001, with a foreword by John Todd The Origins of Peak Oil Doomerism People in the Peak Oil movement chafe at the label of doomer, but many of us do have an apocalyptic bent. Although plenty of Peak Oil commentary is sober analysis, a survey of the major websites and books quickly brings up apocalyptic titles like dieoff.org, oilcrash.com, The Death of the Oil Economy, The End of Suburbia, and The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight. Peak Oil writings are sprinkled with predictions that billions will die, civil order will collapse, and even that civilization will end. Why are we so enamored with the idea of doom? . . . Whole Systems Design Of all the various incarnations of ecological design, sustainable living, holistic systems management, and related big-picture ideas for living on a small planet, the one that grabs me is permaculture. None of the other schemes seem so complete, self-contained, and naturally integrated. That may be because permaculture design combines a set of coherent and interlinked principles, an energy- and resource-conserving attention to relative placement of elements, and, unlike most other design systems, a set of ethical guidelines. It is also amply broad-reaching to appeal to a restless generalist like me. Permaculture is notoriously hard to define in a sound-bite. Here's one way to describe it: If you think of natural building, sustainable agriculture, solar energy, graywater recycling, consensus process, and the like as tools, then permaculture is the toolbox that helps organize those tools and suggests how and when to use them. Some of the writings and links here may help deepen your understanding of this vast subject.

the venue for the living roofs conference i attended last week. Beautiful green building made from rammed chalk walls with this amazing timbral domed roof. I was away attending a conference there whilst our lovely volunteers, Miki and Gil were working away on the garden here. We have had a sudden spell of people getting incontact, interested in either volunteering or wanting to know more about co-ops in general. its been really great to meet some people that way, it always re-energises the co-op when we do it.
So I am looking forward to Renie and Gaz coming next month, December volunteers. - it is making us all feel more confident about taking on more here. Like doing an amazing eco refurb of our outbuilding, i have been wanting to do that for years now.

"Permaculture"
“Permaculture is a way of living which promotes a harmonious
balance between all forms of life within the ecosystem.”
PERMACULTURE (permanent culture) is an approach to everyday life that integrates plants, animals, landscape, structures; people who purposely design all the facets of their lives to enhance environmental sustainability within a permanent, sustainable agricultural and cultural system - a diverse, complex eco-system, where the all of the elements interact in mutually beneficial ways to produce a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts.
Permanent is from the Latin "permanens" - to remain to the end, to persist throughout. Culture is from the Latin "cultura" - meaning the cultivation of land, or the intellect. It is a philosophy, an ethic of caring for the earth and working with, not against nature with an attitude of thoughtful observation, an action-meditation - rather than undirected and thoughtless labor.
A way of looking beyond a single-product system, and a means to leave the earth richer than we found it. Its aim is to create self-maintaining, efficient, and highly productive agricultural eco-systems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural eco-systems.

    What is Permaculture?
The goal of permaculture is cooperating with nature in order to create sustainable biosystems for human living. Permaculture comes from "permanent culture". The practical goal is the creation of sustainable biosystems that provide for their own needs and recycle their waste. The word refers to a set of design principles developed by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren and launched with their classic book "Permaculture One" (1978). Permaculture is a design philosophy encompassing diverse but inter-related fields, including gardening/horticulture, architecture, ecology, community design, and systems theory. Basically, the principles are about "finding the right way" to work with the local environment to create sustainable living. Permaculture does not eschew all technology (trogloditism). Permaculture makes efficient use of knowledge to create a productive surrounding flora, fauna, and community system, based on the principles of nature. This is not as hard as it sounds - nature is very powerful and within a few years, even living in an apartment, people can create remarkably productive local biosystems. But permaculture does involve giving up a lot of modern ways of thinking and behaving.

    Lesson Two
    What is permaculture?
In this lesson you will learn:
    • One definition of permaculture The term permaculture has many definitions The origin of permaculture Who is practicing permaculture
"Permaculture is a philosophy of working with, rather than against nature; of protracted & thoughtful observation rather than protracted & thoughtless labour; of looking at plants & animals in all their functions, rather than treating any area as a single-product system."
Bill Mollison (from the permaculture.net website)
This definition of permaculture expresses a basic concept in permaculture - examining and following nature's patterns. Permaculture advocates designing human systems based on natural ecosystems. But, there are many other definitions of permaculture, just as there are many definitions of sustainable living. The term permaculture is a contraction of the words "permanent," "agriculture,” and “culture.” Although the original focus of permaculture was sustainable food production, the philosophy of permaculture has expanded over time to encompass economic and social systems.  It is a dynamic movement that is still evolving.  For example, some practitioners are integrating spirituality and personal growth work into the framework of permaculture.
