We are an informal group interested in learning and promoting permaculture in the Portland, Oregon area. Permaculture is a system of conscious, sustainable, ecological design. See the glossary for more information. We hold free monthly educational meetings that are open to everyone the 3rd Monday of each month We form partnerships with other organizations to promote sustainability education and implementation in our region, and welcome inquiries from any group with similar goals. We are also interested in creating permaculture demonstration sites in the Portland area. If you know of a good potential site, we would be happy to discuss it with you! An ideal site would have wide public access and a volunteer support base. What is permaculture? Permaculture is a system of ecological design. It is the only design system which incorporates ethics as an integral part of the design process. The ethics of permaculture are Care for the Earth, Care for People, and Share your Surplus. By designing within these guidelines, we can all help to nurture and even regenerate our small portion of the planet. One of the important tenets of pc (permaculture) philosophy is that of providing for as many of your own needs as possible. Few of us can manage to grow all the food we eat, but all of us are able to contribute to our own diet in some way. This makes gardening a prominent (and popular) feature in pc design, and there are many principles and techniques utilized in our gardens. However, there are many more aspects of pc that do not relate to gardening that anyone can do, anywhere. We invite you to explore them with us at our various events - and feel free to ask questions!

In 2004, Josh Byrne set up a permaculture garden in his suburban backyard in Perth. In this episode of Gardening Australia, Josh travels to Peter Cundall’s garden in Northern Tasmania to chat about the different gardening techniques each of them use. We revisit how Josh planned, established and developed his garden and look at the many aspects that make up his permaculture garden including building a chook shed and run, planting the verge garden and establishing a wetlands area.
      Permaculture Location
      · Select a sunny location
      · Away from trees so there isn’t competition from the tree roots and shade
      Preparation of a Permaculture Garden
      · Slash the weeds and drop them to the ground. Then sheet mulch it to prevent them re-growing.
      · No cultivation is necessary. Feed from the top; straw, manure, minerals, let it feed itself. Essentially let the worms and the soil life do the cultivation. It’s one of the best things about feeding from the top, that soil life and gravity will work it for us. It’s so easy.

Bill Mollison is a living legend. He's known as the genius of permaculture, "the David Brower of Australia," or a crusty old curmudgeon, depending on the source. But whether it's glowing admiration or sneering dismissal, reaction to Mollison is invariably strong. He is clearly one of the most interesting specimens of the human species - which he has spent years studying from a naturalist's behavioral perspective. He passed through Seattle recently with a film crew shooting a documentary about the far-flung successes of permaculture, a radically new (or, some have said, radically old) way of gardening, designing, and living sustainably by cooperating with nature. Ironically, we met in a downtown hotel room - filled with traffic noise - as we stalked a definition of permaculture and considered the eeriness of modern life. For a more detailed exploration, see Mollison's book Permaculture: A Designer's Manual , available for $34.95 (plus $3 shipping) from Permaculture Drylands, PO Box 27371, Tucson, AZ 85726, 602/824-3465.

About Permaculture
The Origin of Permaculture
Permaculture is a word originally coined by Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the mid 1970's to describe an "integrated, evolving system of perennial or self-perpetuating plant and animal species useful to man" Mollison, B. and Holmgren, D. Permaculture One published by Corgi 1978 and since published in 7 languages (now out of print)

What Is Permaculture?
A more current definition of permaculture, which reflects the expansion of focus implicit in Permaculture One, is 'Consciously designed landscapes which mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature, while yielding an abundance of food, fibre and energy for provision of local needs. People, their buildings and the ways in which they organise themselves are central to permaculture. Thus the permaculture vision of permanent or sustainable agriculture has evolved to one of permanent or sustainable culture.
The Design System
More precisely permaculture is a "design system based on ecological principles"

Permaculture
is a worldwide movement defined by one of its founders, Bill Mollison, as "a design system for creating sustainable human environments." Another definition, coined by Austin permie Selwyn Polit, is "practical sustainability." People often arrive at permaculture through an interest in gardening, and certainly growing food where people live is an essential element of sustainable culture. But this design system also encompasses many other elements, including natural and green building, renewable energy, social activism, community-building, and alternative business and finance models.
The Austin Permaculture Guild (formerly known as the Austin Area Permaculture Group) is a group of permaculture course graduates in and around Austin, TX, USA, who are dedicated to practicing, promoting, and teaching this approach to design and living. We offer classes throughout the year in Austin and other places around central Texas. Permaculture design courses are a rich mix of classroom learning, field trips, and hands-on projects. Graduates leave with skills, inspiration, and lots of new friends and business contacts. And because one of the graduation requirements is the completion of a site design project, you will also leave the course with your own site design.

Supplementing the xmas fare
The great rain that we've had recently, coupled with some hot sunny days, means that the garden is thriving. Both mandalas are really taking shape, and the garden probably looks better than it ever has. We managed to get plenty of our own produce into the xmas dinner. I went out on Christmas Day morning to dig up potatoes and harvest zucchinis. We also had our own eggs, onions, herbs (parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme and chives), a few little tomatoes, and loads of berries. The berries, which are planted as a 'living fence' around the first mandala, have taken a couple of years to get established. Unfortunately, during that time they've lost their labels. We've been able to identify raspberries, boysenberries, cape gooseberries, red currants and black currants, but there are several other plants I can't identify. I think I planted silvanberries, a thornless blackberry, jostaberries (pronounced 'yostaberries') and loganberries. However, some of the plants died, and I can't work out the identity of most of those that survived. I'm going to have to take some cuttings into the farmer's market (where I bought some of the plants) and see if one of the plant sellers can tell me what they are. We did this with the herbs and it was very successful - thanks to the herb seller at the markets we now know what we're growing in the edge guild around both mandalas.

The word permaculture comes from permanent agriculture. permaculture strives for agriculture that is ecologically sound and sustainable in the long term
http://www.bcb.uwc.ac.za/Envfacts/facts/permaculture.htm
The word permaculture comes from permanent agriculture. Permaculture strives for agriculture that is ecologically sound and sustainable in the long term: this means that it should be non-polluting, economically and socially viable, and provide for its own needs. Permaculture uses the inherent, or natural, qualities of plants and animals, combined with the natural characteristics of landscapes and structures, to produce a life- supporting system for city and country, using the smallest area possible. Permaculture is essentially a way of achieving efficient and sustainable food production. PERMACULTURE ETHICS
* Care of the earth - means care of all living and non-living things: soil, plants, animals, atmosphere, water. It implies activities that do not harm, but rehabilitate the earth, promote active conservation and the frugal use of resources.
* Care of people - means that basic needs such as food, shelter, education, and satisfying employment are taken care of.
