The word permaculture , coined by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren during the 1970s, is a portmanteau of perma nent agri culture as well as perma nent culture . Through a series of publications, Mollison, Holmgren and their associates documented an approach to designing human settlements, in particular the development of perennial agricultural systems that mimic the structure and interrelationship found in natural ecologies Permaculture design principles extend from the position that "The only ethical decision is to take responsibility for our own existence and that of our children" (Mollison, 1990). The intent was that, by rapidly training individuals in a core set of design principles, those individuals could become designers of their own environments and able to build increasingly self-sufficient human settlements — ones that reduce society's reliance on industrial systems of production and distribution that Mollison identified as fundamentally and systematically destroying the earth's ecosystems. While originating as an agro-ecological design theory, permaculture has developed a large international following of individuals who have received training through intensive two week long 'permaculture design courses'. This 'permaculture community' continues to expand on the original teachings of Mollison and his associates, integrating a range of

About this publication (formerly The Permaculture FAQ)
Introduction The word "permaculture" was coined in 1978 by Bill Mollison, an Australian ecologist, and one of his students, David Holmgren. It is a contraction of "permanent agriculture" or "permanent culture." Permaculture is about designing ecological human habitats and food production systems. It is a land use and community building movement which strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings, microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, and water into stable, productive communities. The focus is not on these elements themselves, but rather on the relationships created among them by the way we place them in the landscape. This synergy is further enhanced by mimicking patterns found in nature. A central theme in permaculture is the design of ecological landscapes that produce food. Emphasis is placed on multi-use plants, cultural practices such as sheet mulching and trellising, and the integration of animals to recycle nutrients and graze weeds.

Offers information about sustainable design and interactive forums for the discussion of topics related to permaculture.
http://www.permaearth.org/
Scientific research has demonstrated that ecological stability is achieved through biological diversity, and no single organism is responsible for that stability. Permaculture research reveals that this stability is achieved only through a complex network of connections..."functional connections" between elements in the total system. The more functional connections a system has, the more sustainable it becomes.
Modeling this concept of functional connections is the basis of Permaculture Design. These web pages will provide the functional connections that link people to people and people to information. Our "forums" are interactive and help serve the growing interest in Permaculture Design and all its applications. New information is added regularly so stop back often and browse.
"Permaculture is the art and science that applies patterns found in nature to the design and construction of human and natural environments. Only by applying such patterns and principles to the built environment can we truly achieve a sustainable living system. Permaculture principles are now being adapted to all systems and disciplines that human settlement requires. Architects, planners, farmers, economists, social scientists, as well as students, homeowners and gardeners can utilize the principles of Permaculture Design." ~ Larry Santoyo

"The Bullock brothers up on Orcas Island have always been great, you know, mixed system, marsh and hillside and there are many others, I'm sure. But for every Bullock brother, there are a hundred woo woos spinning around in circles."
- Bill Mollison, Permaculture Founder "What permaculturists are doing is the most important activity that any group is doing on the planet. We don't know what details of a truly sustainable future are going to be like, but we need options, we need people experimenting in all kinds of ways and permaculturists are one of the critical gangs that are doing that."

Increased Drought tolerance and Resistance to Salinity Through Fungi
Past articles have looked at evidence of mycorrhizal fungi helping plants tolerate salinity, heavy metals and arsenic , and have increased tolerance to acid rain . Here we look at two recent discoveries showing how mycorrhizal inoculation can help plants better survive drought and salinisation. In one study ( Marulanda, A, et al. Drought tolerance and antioxidant activities in lavender plants colonized by native drought-tolerant or drought-sensitive Glomus species. MICROBIAL ECOLOGY ), researchers looked at drought-tolerant species of the mycorrhizal fungi Glomus (namely drought-tolerant strains of Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae ) and their effects on drought-tolerant Lavandula spica (lavender). Drought tolerant strains of Glomus intraradices showed 35% greater root mass growth in the lavender compared to the regular strains of G. intraradices. And the drought tolerant Glomus mosseae showed 100% greater root mass compared to regular strains of G. mosseae. Other beneficial effects included an increase in water content in the plant and decreases in antioxidants which would hurt plant health in times of drought. Plants with the drought tolerant strain also had higher levels of nitrogen and potassium compared to the non-drought tolerant Glomus species.

"The more you understand, the more you can put nature to work for you, the less you need." Mollison:
"That's right. You should be thinking of getting out of work in six years time. You should be moving to where you don't have to move, you're just running around on the farm and admiring the ways the trees are working for you. This mate of mine... he's got a great big sign up on his farm, and it says: 'Employed on this farm are one stockman, one irrigation man and 50 billion worms. That's all.'"
Permaculture is the design of human living spaces around environmental principles. Permaculture is not an end or destination, but rather a means or road leading towards sustainable and ecologically sound ways to meet human needs. Permaculture uses thoughtful observation rather than mindless labor. It uses cunning not resources. It works to slow the rate of increase of entropy (disorder). It turns waste to resources problems into assets. Permaculturists treat every situation differently work parallel to nature not at right angles to it. They care for the earth, care for people, give away surplus, and always pick up hitch-hikers.
To become a practitioner of Permaculture, you must first take a Permaculture Design Course and be certified. Permaculture Design Courses are going on regularly in 40 nations now. There are even regular convergences of Permaculture teachers, and Institutes for advancement of the science.

Permaculture Credit Union Mission Statement:
The Permaculture Credit Union pools the financial resources of people who believe in the ethics of Permaculture - care of the earth, care of people, and reinvestment of surplus for the betterment of both. We apply those resources to earth-friendly and socially responsible loans and investments.
The history of financial institutions is one of focus on the bottom line which results in overexploitation of the earth's resources. Now, an innovative new financial institution - Permaculture Credit Union - has been established to allow its members to share their excess with other members of like mind who would use it for sustainable projects and, at the same time, take care of the Earth.
