Elements as Building Blocks
As you probably saw, the periodic table is organized like a big grid. The elements are placed in specific places because of the way they look and act. If you have ever looked at a grid, you know that there are rows (left to right) and columns (up and down). The periodic table has rows and columns, too, and they each mean something different.
You've got Your Periods...
Even though they skip some squares in between, all of the rows go left to right. When you look at a periodic table, each of the rows is considered to be a different period (Get it? Like PERIODic table.). In the periodic table, elements have something in common if they are in the same row. All of the elements in a period have the same number of atomic orbitals . Every element in the top row (the first period) has one orbital for its electrons . All of the elements in the second row (the second period) have two orbitals for their electrons. It goes down the periodic table like that. At this time, the maximum number of electron orbitals or electron shells for any element is seven.
...and Your Groups
Now you know about periods. The periodic table has a special name for its columns, too. When a column goes from top to bottom, it's called a

No data Includes the history of the periodic table and information on the structure of atoms and the periodic table.
http://web.buddyproject.org/web017/web017/
Welcome to Mrs. Gibson's Periodic Table ADventure website! This website was created in accordance with the 8th grade chemistry curriculum at Princeton Community Middle School in Princeton, Indiana. This goal of this website is to introduce and explore basic chemistry concepts and to practice these concepts using engaging web-based research and activities. In the culminating activity, students will perform a WebQuest which requires them to research an element using the internet. Once students have researched their elements, students will develop and perform commercials for their elements. Last updated on 4/18/00 Thank you for visiting! If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail D. Gibson, Grade 8 Science Teacher at dld1999@excite.com

... Transition Metal More Periodic Table Information Introduction to the Periodic Table People have known about elements like carbon and gold since ancient time. The elements couldn't be changed using any chemical method. Each element has a unique number of protons. If you examine samples of iron and silver, you can't tell how many protons the atoms have. However, you can tell the elements apart because they have different properties. You might notice there are more similarities between iron and silver than between iron and oxygen. Could there be a way to organize the elements so you could tell at a glance which ones had similar properties? What is the Periodic Table?

This version of the Periodic table is based on that recommended by the Commission on the Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry and published in IUPAC Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, Recommendations 2005. Atomic weights are quoted to five significant figures. For more precise values see the table of 2007 recommended values (see Pure Appl. Chem., , 2051-2066 and press release ). For elements with no stable nuclides the mass of the longest-lived isotope has been quoted in brackets. However three such elements (Th, Pa, and U) do have a characteristic terrestrial isotopic composition, and for these an atomic weight is tabulated. The names for elements 112 to 118 are temporary and are based on the 1978 recommendations (see Pure Appl. Chem., , 381-384). Mass number of the longest-lived isotope of hassium from Phys. Rev. Lett.

Click on an element in the table to get information for that element. Data are displayed below the table. Coloring by Numbers
Use the shading control to shade the table according to the values of the physical properties of the elements. The color scale indicates the colors assigned to the relative values of the property being displayed along with the maximum and minimum values. The actual colors and degree of shading will depend upon the computer hardware and browser software being used. Shading by atomic number is displayed when the applet begins. Jigsaw Puzzle
Pressing the "New Puzzle" button will scramble the elements. The object is to drag each element to its proper location in the table. Several different subsets of elements may be selected. Pressing the "Solve" button will cause the currently selected element to return to its proper location in the table. Pressing the "Solve All" sends all remaining puzzles pieces back to their proper locations. Molar Mass Calculator
Click on the "Formula" check box to calculate molar masses for compounds. To enter an element in a compound, click on that element in the table. Use the digit and parentheses buttons to complete a formula. The formula entry blank does not accept keyboard input. You will have to use your pointing device (mouse) to "click out" the formula. The resulting formula mass is rounded to the precision of the least precise atomic mass.
