'The Princess of Paleontology'
During the first half of the 19th century, geology was referred to as "underground science" a subversive activity. The Book of Genesis was considered the true account of historical events. And then, in 1812, a 12-year-old girl in England began to find fossils that no one could explain.

http://www.naturalsciences.org/research/paleontology/index.html
The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences' paleontology collection includes approximately 32,000 vertebrate, 18,000 invertebrate, and 500 paleobotanical specimens. The single most important specimen among the Museum's paleontological holdings is the world's best-preserved and most complete Acrocanthosaurus atokensis . Beginning in April 2000, the Museum will be the only place in the world to see an articulated, real Acrocanthosaurus skeleton on display. The Museum also holds a nearly complete specimen of the dinosaur, Thescelosaurus , shown here at left. Vertebrate specimens include fish, mammals, reptiles, and dinosaurs. Catalogued fish specimens total 20,000, the Museum's most extensive fossil vertebrate holdings. Most of these are from the Pliocene of North Carolina. A large collection of Cretaceous crocodilian and turtle specimens makes up most of the reptilian portion of the paleontology collection. A good collection of North Carolina dinosaur material also exists. The fossil mammal collection holds one of the largest clusters of giant ground sloth ( Eremotherium ) bones of the Pliocene/Pleistocene age ever found North of Florida. These fossils were donated by the city of Wilmington, N.C. A sloth skeleton is being articulated for display in the Museum beginning in April 2000.

Near Ithaca, Tompkins Co., NY New York State provides a rich and varied assemblage of fossil-bearing deposits which have drawn the attention of both professional and amateur paleontologists for over 100 years. The strata representing the Devonian Period are especially well represented. Fossiliferous Ordivician and Silurian strata, and, to a lesser extent, Upper Cambrian strata, are also present in the State. In addition, New York State contains numerous deposits which were lain down at the close of the last Pleistocene glaciation, many containing plant and animal fossils. Dinosaurs
We've all heard about dinosaurs. They have become quite popular, and starred in many movies. Little children have cute little T-rexs on their shirts and play with soft, cuddly dinosaur toys (Well, I do too...). Basicly, dinosaurs have become like fairy tale creatures, but they are more than that. I know it is very hard to believe, but those huge monsters you saw on Jurassic Park actually walked, lived and breathed on the exact same land as you do. Also, even though we don't know for sure, I highly doubt that they behaved like they did on Jurassic Park. Basically, they were just normal, wild animals, like a lion is today, just 1000 times heavier.

Marine Reptiles
What is a dinosaur?
The word dinosaur means "terrible lizard". Dinosaurs were reptiles, meaning that they had no fur and hatched from eggs. They were closely related to lizards, but were really very different. There are many differences, but the main one lies where you'd least expect it. It is the way their legs join to their hips. It sounds funny, but if you think about it really, it is true. If you look at a lizard, you'll notice that their legs are in a kind of squatted position, with the legs going out to the side. A dinosaurs legs, however, go straight down, much like our own. So, that is how you can tell the difference between a dinosaur and a lizard, if you should ever encounter one, or if it is a question on Jeopardy.

OF SOUTHEAST ALASKA

University of South Dakota
Southeast Alaska is a spectacular region of glacier-cut fjords and islands covered with dense rainforest. Its primary industries are tourism, fishing, and logging. There are few roads through the region, and travel is primarily by boat and float plane. It is also the home to Tlingit and Haida native groups, famous for their totems and their marine and forest adaptations. Limestone areas of Southeast Alaska have developed an impressive karst topography containing many caves. In the late 1980s the Tongass Cave Project (a joint venture of the National Speleological Society and Tongass National Forest) was created to locate, explore, and survey these caves. Caving expeditions have been conducted every summer since that time. In 1990 the first vertebrate fossils were found, and a major research effort began to explore this new scientific resource. Large-scale paleontological and archaeological excavations have been conducted on northern Prince of Wales Island, and the research is now expanding to other islands and coastal mainland areas of Southeast Alaska. The goal of this research is to establish a complete chronology of mammals, birds, and fish living in the region before, during, and following the Last Glacial Maximum, and up to the present day. This work is helping to establish the timing and extent of glaciation, the presence of Ice Age coastal refugia for land mammals, and the possibility that humans first entered North America by this coastal route.

Paleontology is the study of ancient organisms, and Invertebrate Paleontology is the study of ancient invertebrates, typically defined as any organisms without backbones, excluding plants and all those pesky bacteria. The study of invertebrate fossils has long been a strong component of the Wooster geology curriculum; many paleontologists found their start in the discipline here. The first paleontologist on Wooster's faculty was Richard Liebe, who taught here from 1961 through 1967. Dr. Liebe's specialty was the systematics and biostratigraphy of conodonts. Richard Osgood was the paleontologist at Wooster from 1967 until his death in 1981. He achieved international recognition for his pioneering work on invertebrate trace fossils, particularly those in the Lower and Middle Paleozoic. Since 1981 Wooster's paleontologist has been Mark Wilson,
