Geology / Maps
The position of land masses as long ago as four hundred million years ago was totally different to that of today. With the motion and collision of the plates that make up the earth's crust the location and climate of familiar 'hot' or 'cold' places bears little relation to the present. In the North Atlantic area the Silurian marked the closure of the great 'Iapetus' Ocean that separated present-day North America from Northern Europe. At that time, even though the boundary of the Eastern edge of North America was more or less in the same position as today, Newfoundland and a portion of Eastmost America was on the South of the ocean together with England and Ireland. Northern Ireland and Scotland were on the Northern flank. The end of the Silurian saw the formation of massive mountain ranges along the edges of the two continental margins, and in England, a move to deposition of sediments derived from the new mountains. This created the Devonian system. The deposition of Silurian rocks was widespread worldwide.

geology ) The geography of the geologic past; concerns all physical aspects of an area that can be determined from the study of the rocks. Paleogeography is used to describe the changing positions of the continents and the ancient extent of land, mountains, shallow sea, and deep ocean basins.

Sci-Tech Encyclopedia Paleogeography The geography of the ancient past. Paleogeographers study the changing positions of the continents and the ancient extent of land, mountains, and shallow-sea and deep-ocean basins. The Earth's geography changes because its surface is in constant motion due to plate tectonics . The continents move at rates of 2–10 cm/yr (0.75–4 in./yr). Though this may seem slow, over millions of years continents can travel across the globe. As the continents move, new ocean basins form, mountains rise and erode, and sea level rises and falls. Paleogeographic maps are necessary in order to understand global climatic change, migration routes, oceanic circulation, mountain building, and the formation of many of the Earth's natural resources, including oil and gas. Over 70% of the North American Cordillera is made up of 'suspect terranes'. Many of these geological provinces are certainly allochthonous to the North American continent and seem to have been swept from far reaches of the Pacific Ocean before collision and accretion into the Cordilleran margin mostly in Mesozoic to early Cenozoic time. The images presented here show the paleogeography of the SW US
from 1.8 billion years ago to 10 million years ago. When played
in order, the paleogeographic evolution of the region
unfolds. Emphasis is on the Mesozoic where two or more images of
each period are shown. Two different interpretations are
presented for some of the periods. One shows a tectonic interpretation in which most elements of the western US were derived from North America; the second shows a tectonic interpretation in which some elements originated far from North America (exotic elements). Debate continues concerning these two different tectonic models.

What are Paleocurrents?
Why are they important? Paleocurrents are vectors indicating the direction of flow of currents depositing sediments on the earth's (or mars etc.) surface, in the past.

These maps depict the distribution of lithologies, and the paleocurrents by geologic periods, and are based on nearly one million measurements worldwide. This information can be extremely helpful in attempting to reconstruct the past history of the earth.
