Paleobotany Reconstruction of the branching system of Archaeopteris , a Devonian progymnosperm (after Beck). The paleobotanical collections at the University of Michigan contain approximately 15,000 individually catalogued specimens. This estimate is necessarily conservative because an individual specimen may contain more than one leaf, stem, flower, or fruit impression. The collections have strong historical importance due to the strength of paleobotany at the University of Michigan over the past 50 years. The collections include the important specimens of Chester A. Arnold, and Charles B. Beck, all past curators of paleobotany at the University of Michigan as well as their students and colleagues.
The collections are strong in Paleozoic vascular plants, especially pteridophytes, progymnosperms, and gymnosperms. These specimens document the rise of seed plants and early increases in complexity of water and nutrient conducting tissues that allowed diversification of the first arborescent (tree-like) growth forms. Early Cretaceous angiosperms, the earliest flowering plants, are also well representedby isolated leaves and dispersed cuticle remains recovered from sediments deposited well before the time when larger portions of these plants are preserved intact. The collections also include important holdings of Cenozoic ferns and angiosperms from the Western United States. Among algal groups, we hold one of the world's largest collections of Paleozoic receptaculitids, and the only such collection for which most specimens have associated data on field orientation (critical for assessing the anatomy and growth mode of this problematic group).

As I discussed in my last article, "Paleobotany ," paleobotany is the study of fossil plants. But fossilized plants can tell us so much about the ancient world. They can, for example, tell us about the paleoclimate, that is, what the climate was like millions of years ago. For instance, if we see a lot of plants that only grow in warm, tropical climates, this tells us that the climate was warm at the time. How well fossil plants are preserved can also tell us a lot. If you see fossilized leaves in a museum, you might be disappointed that they are not perfect specimens; instead, they might look as though they had been chewed on. Well, they probably were, and the damage caused by animals can also tell us something. First of all, it tells us that the plants were edible. If paleontologists find a lot of plants that have been browsed on or maybe broken and trampled, they have an idea of how many animals were living in an area at any one time.

Posted by arauquoia z7b GA ( My Page ) on Tue, Feb 20, 07 at 15:36 This from "IN THE GARDEN; From the Jurassic to the Patio" by ANNE RAVER in the N.Y. Times (February 8, 2007) on the Wollemi pine: "I WENT to the Plant-O-Rama, the annual horticultural hoo-hah at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, in search of new plants two weeks ago, and fell in love with one of the oldest on earth: the Wollemi pine, which grew among the dinosaurs 200 million years ago. "The three-footer was sitting in a pot at the edge of the Trail of Evolution at the Steinhardt Conservatory, where algae and liverworts, horsetails and club mosses early plants of the Paleozoic era lead to the ferns and cycads that flourished in the Jurassic period. "'Nobody thinks about this, but the dinosaurs all died, and many of the plants that grew alongside them continued to evolve and live on this planet today,' said Scot D. Medbury, the president of the Brooklyn garden, as we stared at the potted pine sitting next to its cousins, a potted Norfolk Island pine, a prickly bunya-bunya and a hoop pine. "'It's a cool thing to bring them together, a family reunion, in a sense,' Mr. Medbury said.

History of the Paleobotanical Section of BSA
"The Paleobotanical Section of Botanical Society of America is the oldest organization of Paleobotanists in the world. The founding father of the Section in the years of 1934-1936 was Loren C. Perry, then of Cornell University. Paleobotanical contributions at the Botanical Society of America's meetings had customarily been presented before the General Section. Professor Perry initiated discussions of forming a formal organization of the Paleobotany Section. The idea was enhanced by the visit to the U.S.A. of Dr. H. Hamshaw Thomas during the Pittsburgh meeting of the Botanical Society. The Botanical Society Council minutes for the 30th Annual Meeting, at Washington University, St. Louis, December 31, 1935 - January 2, 1936, include an item: 'The Secretary reported a movement on the part of several of the younger members interested in paleobotany to ask for the formation of a paleobotanical section. The Council informally expressed its hearty approval of such action.' The minutes for the corresponding meeting at Atlantic City, December 29-31, 1936, include an item:'The Secretary reported plans for the organization of a Paleobotanical Section of the Society. The Council voted its approval of the proposal to organize such a Section.'

Sir J. William Dawson
The first Canadian-born scientist of worldwide reputation was Sir John William Dawson, born in Pictou, Nova Scotia, in 1820. As a boy, he developed an incurable interest in geology and was an avid collector of local fossils. In Dawson's day, schoolboys often found fossil leaves while gathering shale to make slate pencils. Dawson recorded his discoveries and exchanged fossils with other geologists from the Pictou and Joggins areas, adding to his already overflowing collection. He attended the University of Edinburgh to study geology in 1840, but was forced to leave after only one year due to financial problems. The next few years of his life were spent working for mining companies and doing field work which was published through the Geological Society of London. When the famous geologist Charles Lyell visited coal deposits in Pictou, Dawson acted as his guide. In 1851, Dawson and Lyell teamed up again to examine the interiors of fossil tree trunks at Joggins , Nova Scotia. They discovered the remains of some of the earliest known reptiles
