I Was Wrong
My friend James Randi speculates — with only partial facetiousness — that when one receives a Ph.D., a chemical secreted from the diploma parchment enters the brain and prevents the recipient from ever again saying “I don’t know” and “I was wrong.” As one counterexample I hereby confess that in my column on Chinese science in the July issue I was wrong in my conversion of Chinese yuan as 80 to the dollar (it is eight). More serious was a statement I made in the June issue about a Fox television program claiming that the moon landing was faked. I said that the lunar lander rocket showed no exhaust because there is no oxygen-rich atmosphere on the moon. I was partially wrong. The lack of an atmosphere plays a minor role; the main reason is that the lander’s engine used hypergolic propellants that burn very cleanly. In both instances, readers were kind enough to provide constructive criticism. evolution genetics out of Africa paleoanthropology ...

ARPA 101 The Archaeology of Civilisations
Stephen Collier
Interral/External Second Semester
This unit traces the archaeological evidence for the development of complex, urban societies in the Old and New Worlds from the time of established farming communities. There are two lectures and one tutorial per week. Assessment will be one examination and one essay for external students, and one exam and lecture and tutorial assessment for internal students. ARPA 102 Human Evolution
Peter Brown
External First Semester
This unit examines the evidence for the evolution of humans, and their ancestors, over the last five million years. Although this unit will concentrate on producing an overview, some topics, for instance the origins of bipedal locomotion, and increasing encephalisation, will be treated in greater detail. ARPA 104/304 Archaeology: Studying the Human Past
Iain Davidson
Internal/External First Semester
This unit introduces the practice, method and theories, history, and achievements of archaeology. Through lectures and practical sessions featuring the simulation of an archaeological excavation it prepares students for the in-depth critical study of the archaeology of any region or time. Topics include the nature and aims of archaeology, the history of the discipline, types of evidence and their recovery, dating, the scope of archaeological enquiry, the place of archaeology in contemporary life, and the ethics of archaeology with respect to the present and the past.
