The Radar Ornithology Laboratory at Clemson University CUROL ) was established in 1990. The laboratory is devoted to the acquisition and analysis of radar data as it relates to bird movements in the atmosphere. Relating radar data, field observation, satellite imagery, and weather data, our laboratory has discovered important factors controlling temporal and spatial patterns of daily and seasonal movements of birds. Our use of the WSR-88D (NEXRAD - Weather Surveillance Radar 88D) network in the United States has allowed us to record large-scale migration events and relate these to topography and local and regional weather conditions. We also are using these data to develop continent-wide and regional migration maps and to build predictive models of migration for different regions of the United States. Some recent work at the Laboratory includes:

About Smithsonian Ornithology
Throughout its history , the Smithsonian Institution has played a role of paramount importance in the development of ornithology in North America. Across the Institution, ornithologists carry out important work on the basic biology and conservation of birds all over the world. Renowned scholarly expertise, field work, archives, and a global network provide the Smithsonian with both unique qualifications and an imperative to establish a more integrated research program and train the next generation of avian biologists. In addition, synthesis and analysis will provide the public and decision-makers with exciting and well-researched information about birds and their habitats through a variety of communication venues Smithsonian Ornithology is an extraordinary educational resource and reference for the general and bird-loving public, offering a touchstone for bird interests at all levels, and creating a platform upon which a community of "bird constituents" can be developed.

ABA INSTITUTE FOR FIELD ORNITHOLOGY
The Institute for Field Ornithology (IFO) is operated by the American Birding Association, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, with the goal of teaching birders about birds in their natural habitat. Founded in 1983 by ABA Member Charles Duncan at the University of Maine at Machias, the IFO has become a recognized leader in ornithological education. The IFO has a proven track record of successful workshops in the United States and in other countries in the western hemisphere. IFO workshops are designed to provide a comprehensive look at bird biology, including life history, ecology, behavior, and field identification. Most workshops include an emphasis on field identification and the natural history and conservation of birds. Instructional time is split approximately equally between field and classroom sessions. Who attends IFO workshops are for anyone interested in learning more about birds in their natural environment. Workshop attendees do not need to be expert birders, but because of the intensive nature of our events, a keen interest in the subject is important. Previous workshop participants have ranged from age 12 (accompanied by a parent) to age 87 and have come from most US states, several Canadian provinces, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. Skill levels have ranged from rank beginner to highly experienced field observer.

Topics include how we identify birds and understand their evolutionary history, what special physical and behavioral adaptations birds have, how birds live and reproduce, and how birds respond to changes in their environment. Within these web pages, you can learn more about the Burke Ornithology Division, its bird collections, and its activities. The ornithological collections at the Burke Museum are relatively modern, with more than 85% of the collection built in the past 20 years. We maintain a comprehensive collection of birds from the Pacific Northwest, North America, and many other parts of the world. These bird specimens are used for teaching, research, and art. We are particularly known for our special collections such as spread wings (the largest such collection in the world) and bird tissues (probably the world's second largest collection).
Mission The Burke Museum's Ornithology Division contributes to the world's knowledge of birds by building and maintaining exceptionally well-curated collections of bird specimens for use in teaching, research, and art. We are committed to providing hands-on training for students in the natural sciences through specialized classes, collection-based research opportunities, and participation in local and international expeditions. We provide access to information from our bird collections to the wider community via on-site visits, bird specimen loans, exhibits, educational outreach, and a Web-searchable database.

To assist those with a limited background in ornithology in understanding the terms used in this page, we have complied a brief glossary of terms. Throughout this site, we have attempted to simplify all terminology, however as this was not always possible, we have compiled this glossary for your use. This glossary defines 39 of the more technical bird terms used within this site. Along with the terms, we have provided simple labeled diagrams which outline the topography of a generalized bird. Should you wish to have some terms defined which do not appear in this glossary, we suggest you refer to any ornithology textbook for more information. One suggestion is "The Audubon Society Encyclopedia of North American Birds", by John K. Terres.

Introduction
The AFO is a quarterly journal of interest to the more advanced birdwatcher in Australia and overseas. It contains reports of field behaviour, research, and records of new birds for the Australian region. The journal is the successor to The Australian Bird Watcher , which the Bird Observers Club of Australia published for forty-four years. BOCA believes that AFO can fill an important niche in publishing the findings of rigorous field research on birds of the Australian region conducted by amateur and professional ornithologists. Papers dealing with most aspects of field ornithology will be considered for publication, including studies of behaviour, ecology, breeding biology, records of rare species, important surveys and topical reviews. AFO will also be a valuable forum for publication of the results of incomplete, but rigorously conducted postgraduate and honours studies. The aim of the editors and editorial board is to build on the valuable contribution to Australian ornithological research made by The Australian Bird Watcher and make Australian Field Ornithology a high quality journal that all serious ornithologists in Australia and many overseas will want to read. To achieve this goal we need your support. We invite you to become a subscriber to

Ornithology for Kids
Over 9,000 different species of birds inhabit all parts of the world, from puffins in the Arctic to the birds in your backyard. And they are everywhere: soaring and diving through the clouds, flying from branch to branch, hopping on the sidewalk, singing from the trees and bushes. For all their closeness to us, birds continue to fascinate us.
Ornithology is the study of birds. One way ornithologists study different species of birds is by observation and careful note taking on bird behavior, appearance, and special adaptations. In this class, students will become ornithologists and will investigate what sets birds apart from all other creatures.

Students' Weekly Homework Assignment
Students are to take their Birding Journal notebook home each week and then return it to class again every Wednesday. At home, students are to spend at least 10 minutes observing, sketching and writing about at least one new bird that they see during the week. Students will use six clues to help them identify each new bird. These clues are in their Birding Journals along with an example.

Ivory Bill Report Is Called 'Faith-Based Ornithology'

By JAMES GORMAN Published: January 24, 2006 In the strongest published criticism yet of claims for the sighting of the ivory-billed woodpecker in Arkansas in 2004, an ornithologist who was not involved in the search has called claims for proof of the bird's existence "faith-based ornithology." The ivory bill was, or is, the largest North American woodpecker. It inhabited Southeastern forests that have been heavily logged, and the bird had been thought extinct, although occasional unconfirmed sightings have occurred often since the last confirmed one in the middle of the last century. Then, in the spring of 2005, scientists announced that the bird had been found in the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas, prompting a surge of elation among birders and the general public, and later a steady current of questions and skepticism.
