Big Sur Ornithology Lab Andrew Molera State Park is an important resting place and breeding ground for hundreds of species of migratory birds. To understand these incredibly diverse birds and monitor their populations, VWS created the Big Sur Ornithology Lab. Through daily censusing, researchers are able to collect information on the health and distribution of bird populations. Our research is part of a global effort helping recognize the need for habitat conservation throughout the world. The ornithology lab bands landbirds to identify migration routes, breeding and wintering areas, and mortality factors of common western birds. Band encounters as depicted on the map of band encounter locations indicate that some birds may breed as far north as Alaska and winter as far south as southern Mexico. See the Big Sur Ornithology Lab Update for the latest information about birds captured and banded in the area. Take our Bird Quiz to see if you recognize some of these birds. Our Featured Birds section gives detailed information about several local bird species. Don Roberson's website has photos and additional information about

What is an Ornithologist?
A Brief Description of the Professional Ornithologist
Rosemary Drisdelle Jul 27, 2006
This brief article describes the profession of ornithologist and the scientific field of ornithology.
An ornithologist is a scientist who studies birds (ornithology) in an academic setting and has made birds his or her specialty. Ornithologists participate in scientific studies of all aspects of the natural history of birds, both living and extinct. Ornithologists continually add to our knowledge of birds and help guide bird conservation efforts. Ornithologists in articles: The Christmas Bird Count

This tutorial discusses the following topics: how NEXRAD WSR-88D radar works and how to interpret radar imagery; the appearance of non-biological phenomena; the appearance of biological phenomena; examples of bird migration; and related topics and radar ornithology bibliography. Wisconsin's Premier Birding Organization
The Wisconsin Society for Ornithology was organized in 1939 to encourage the study of Wisconsin birds. The aims have since expanded to emphasize all of the many enjoyable aspects of birding and to support the research and habitat protection necessary to preserve Wisconsin birdlife. WSO strives to alert members and the public to situations and practices that threaten Wisconsin's bird populations. Members in the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology include those who enjoy birds attracted to their homes by feeders and bird houses, those who pursue field study or bird banding as a hobby, and those who engage in ornithology professionally. Membership exceeds 1500 from across the United States and around the world.

The Department of Ornithology and Mammalogy was established in 1853 with the creation of the California Academy of Sciences. After the 1906 earthquake and fire, which destroyed most of the original collections of birds and mammals, the department was reborn with the resurrection of the new Academy of Sciences. As a world renown repository for specimens and their accompanying information, the department's collections currently house over 107,000 specimens of birds and over 30,000 specimens of mammals. The department also houses a modern bioacoustics laboratory and an extensive sound library of over 4,000 recordings. Aside from maintaining these collections, department staff and associates are involved in various scientific studies, conservation efforts, and international research projects.
Over 120 countries are represented by specimens in the collections, but the strengths of the department are its extensive holdings of birds and mammals from western North America, as well as important collections from Mexico and Central America, the Galapagos Islands, the Solomon Islands, China, Myanmar, the Philippines, and eastern Africa.
