Sizzling Organic Chemistry Dramas!

by Brenna Lorenz
Electrophilic Addition
(A Molecular Drama) Characters : Secondary carbon (Sec) is sharing four electrons with Primary Carbon (Prim) to form a propene molecule. Along comes a hungry electrophilic Hydrogen (Hyd) who is bonded to an electron-hogging Chlorine (Chlor). Hyd : Oh, look at all those electrons on that propene!
Chlor : What's with you? Aren't my electrons good enough for you?
Hyd : (disgusted) Your electrons. That's the whole trouble with you. They're our electrons, you pig!
Prim : Hi, Hydrogen! Nice nucleus!
Chlor : You keep your electrons away from my Hydrogen's nucleus!
Hyd : (to Propene) Would you share your electrons with little old me?
Prim and Sec : Yes!
Hyd : (Shoving electron pair at Chlorine) Here! Keep your precious electrons! I'm going to bond with someone who appreciates me.
(Hydrogen grabs one of the electron pairs shared by Secondary and Primary Carbons, and after a brief struggle, Secondary lets go, leaving Hydrogen bonded to Primary.)
Sec : Help! I'm a carbocation! Someone give me some electrons, quick! (Spots Chlorine.) Hey, you've got electrons to spare. Share them with me.

"The intelligent use of audiovisual resources will depend upon how well we are able to integrate the technique of the filmmaker or the program producer with the technique and wisdom of the skillful teacher."
Jerome Bruner
Short Movies of Chemical Lecture Experiments

The videos on this site are taken without special lighting techniques. We have used a normal camcorder (Sony PD330E). Some filmed material was saved in the camera. In order to obtain best possible images, some produced videos were directly transfered to a computer using an USB connector. The program Adobe Premiere Plus permits the cutting of videos, sharpening of images (enhancing brightness / contrast) and the insertion of text. Finally the AV files were converted into MPEG-1 format and Real Media files .rm.
Usually the download of a video file takes at least some minutes, because it must be downloaded in its entirety according to the traditional 'store-and-forward principle'. In streaming technology the user does not have to spend time downloading the complete video before viewing. The required wait is minimal. Only the beginning of the files is downloaded. A buffer of packets is formed. As soon as the buffer is full (usually just a matter of seconds), the file starts to play. This means the client player plays back the packets in a seamless stream. While the viewer is watching the video sequence and the information in the buffer is used up, the next portion of data is downloaded etc, until the entire file is played without any interruption. An example of this technique are Real Video (.rm) files served by a Real Video server. They are playable on Real Player.

A beginners' guide to the chemistry of Carbon compounds
What is Organic Chemistry?
The word Organic is one of the most overused in the English language. People use it as a derogatory term in phrases like Don't eat that; it's not organic . Of course, there is a precise scientific definition of the word. In science, Organic can be a biological or chemical term. In Biology it means any thing that is living or has lived. The opposite is Non-Organic. In Chemistry, an Organic compound is one containing Carbon atoms. The opposite term is Inorganic It's the Chemical meaning I want to explore in this essay.
Molecules
All substances are made up of molecules which are collections of atoms. All the molecules in existence are made up of about a hundred different kinds of atoms. For example, a water molecule is composed of two atoms of Hydrogen and one atom of Oxygen. We write its formula as H O A molecule of Sulphuric Acid contains two atoms of Hydrogen, one atom of Sulphur and four atoms of Oxygen. Its formula is

Preface
The Beilstein Dictionary (German/English) has been compiled by the scientific staff of the Beilstein Institute to facilitate the use of Basic Series and Supplementary Series I to IV by those Handbook users whose native language is not German. With a total of about 2,100 entries, it contains most German words occurring in the Beilstein Handbook, as well as common abbreviations, alphabetically listed with their English equivalents. It is our hope that this glossary will prove of assistance to the non German-speaking user of Beilstein, in overcoming any language difficulties which may be encountered.

Organic synthesis is a pure and an applied science. The intellectual challenge of pure organic synthesis coupled with the potential to use organic synthesis to help solve real world problems continues to attract generation after generation of talented young scholars to the field. Students at Oregon have excellent opportunities to explore and learn both the depth and breadth of contemporary organic synthesis, and to prepare themselves for organic chemistry related careers in academia and industry. Welcome to the Cluster for Molecular Chemistry
The Cluster for Molecular Chemistry at the Radboud University of Nijmegen is part of the IMM Research Institute. In 2003 the department celebrated its 50th anniversary. Personnel of the department comprises ca. 167 persons; 13 academic staff, 15 research, technical and general staff. In addition, there are approximately 15 post-doctoral researchers and 54 PhD students who form a strong contribution to the research environment. The department attracts many undergraduate students into its teaching programs, and offers excellent possibilities for students to do a trainee period in the chemistry laboratories in Nijmegen. Students are also stimulated to extend their chemical experience by joining international exchange programs for chemistry students world wide (e.g. European Socrates (Erasmus) program). Currently, the research focuses mainly on four subjects:

Organic Chemistry Laboratory Topics The organic chemistry laboratory provides you with a unique opportunity to do the reactions which you can only read about in your lecture course. Before you begin, you must hone your laboratory safety skills. Next, you must learn the techniques basic to organic chemistry research. Finally you will be able to run experiments in organic chemistry. These organic chemistry web pages illustrate in pictures the techniques of organic chemistry, as well as safety issues, glassware and equipment, laboratory notebooks, and spectroscopy. The pages link directly to Internet sites which provide information on chemicals used in the lab. These same organic chemistry topics are covered in the required text for the laboratory courses: Handbook for Organic Chemistry Lab (by Patty Feist, CU Chemistry Department, latest edition is the 6th, 2002). They are also covered in Organic Laboratory Techniques (Fessenden, Fessenden, and Feist, 3rd edition, Brooks/Cole, 2000 this is the "Lab Text" referred to in the table below). Note: Answers to the study questions at the end of each Handbook chapter are given: Once the techniques are mastered, you are ready to do experiments. Eventually we hope to have illustrations of each lab experiment on this site.
