Career: Operations Research Analysts
Complex problems like this come up all the time. Operations research analysts find ways to solve them. Their work is used by managers in all sorts of industries, whether the goal is to schedule airline pilots to prevent dangerous fatigue or time traffic lights to prevent congestion. Operations research analysts use math and computers to develop software and other tools that managers use to make decisions.

Applying analytical methods to decision-making. Explanation of Operations Research.
What is Operations Research? Definition
The terminology "Operations Research" is somewhat unfortunate or even funny, since it is not any more concerned with operations, nor does its application involve any research in the traditional sense. Some good Operations Research definitions are:
  • Operations Research is the discipline of applying advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. By using techniques such as mathematical modeling to analyze complex situations, operations research gives executives the power to make more effective decisions and build more productive systems. O.R. is the professional discipline that deals with the application of information technology for informed decision-making. It aims to provide a rational bases for decision making by seeking to understand and structure complex situations and to use this understanding to predict system behavior and improve system performance. Much of this work is done using analytical and numerical techniques to develop and manipulate mathematical and computer models of organizational systems composed of people, machines, and procedures. O.R. draws upon ideas from engineering, management, mathematics, and psychology to contribute to a wide variety of application domains; the field is closely related to several other fields in the "decision sciences" - applied mathematics, computer science, economics, industrial engineering, and systems engineering.

Introduction
Operations research may be loosely described as the study of optimal resource allocation. Mathematically, this is the study of optimization. Depending on the options and constraints in the setting, this may involve linear programming, or quadratic-, convex-, integer-, or boolean-programming.
History
Some links to the history of Operations Research can be found at the Military Operations Research Society and on J. E. Beasley 's home page.
Applications and related fields
For numerical optimization techniques (conjugate gradient, simulated annealing, etc.) see 65, Numerical Analysis Discrete optimization problems (traveling salesman, etc.) are principally treated in Combinatorics The word "programming" in this context is essentially unrelated to computer programming; for that topic see Computer Science
Subfields
  • Operations research and management science (for discrete assignment problems see also 05-XX.)

Traveling salesmen know the conundrum all too well: Finding the shortest route to visit the most cities on a single trip. Even with just a few stops, enough possibilities are in that little puzzle to befuddle even the most powerful computers. There's no single answer the trick is to pick the one that is "best."
Decision-making problems like this abound in everyday life. They run from the simple, like finding the fastest route from New York to Boston, to the complex, like scheduling the crews for a fleet of globe-girdling airplanes. In the world of commerce, they range from routing deliveries to running factories, picking the best design for a car, or choosing which stocks to put in a mutual fund.
The task of figuring out how to make the right decision is the challenge being tackled by a small group of mathematicians delving into what is known as "operations research." Operations researchers develop computer programs that guide decision-makers toward the optimum choice. Their goal, says Saul I. Gass, a professor at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business in College Park, is to apply the scientific method to finding "the most efficient use and allocation of limited resources to meet desired objectives." Gass worked with early developers of modern, computer-based optimization programs that have since become important tools for business and industry to minimize costs and maximize time.
