Oil spill pollutes Russian river, kills ducks 11 Jan 2008 17:52:21 GMT Source: Reuters (Adds source of oil spill, number of ducks killed) MOSCOW, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Russian volunteers on Friday scooped dead ducks out of a river near Moscow polluted by an oil spill from a fuel depot at a factory, a leak which is threatening to spread and contaminate drinking water. The oil leaked into the River Dulov on Sunday from a factory which is involved with developing space rocket technology, conservation group WWF said. WWF said the spill measured around 500 tonnes and had killed around 100 ducks. It accused the authorities of playing down its size and being slow to respond. "Local authorities in the first days after the accident did not take any action and lost a lot of time," WWF representative Alexei Knizhnikov said in a statement.

On Friday, November 26, 2004, at approximately 9:15 p.m., the 750-foot, single-hull tanker Athos I, registered under the flag of Cyprus, was reported to be leaking oil into the Delaware River en route to its terminal at the CITGO asphalt refinery in Paulsboro, New Jersey. As two tugboats were helping the vessel manuever to its terminal, a routine procedure, one of the tugboat operators noticed oil in the water, and the oil tanker listed eight degrees and lost power. Two punctures in the tanker's hull 1-foot-by-2-foot and 1-foot-by-6-foot in size later were confirmed by Coast Guard divers. Provided by
