Oil Spill Pollutes Russian River, Kills Ducks Mail this story to a friend Printer friendly version RUSSIA: January 14, 2008
MOSCOW - Russian volunteers on Friday scooped dead ducks out of a river near Moscow polluted by an oil spill from a fuel depot at a factory, a leak which is threatening to spread and contaminate drinking water.
The oil leaked into the River Dulov on Sunday from a factory which is involved with developing space rocket technology, conservation group WWF said. WWF said the spill measured around 500 tonnes and had killed around 100 ducks. It accused the authorities of playing down its size and being slow to respond. "Local authorities in the first days after the accident did not take any action and lost a lot of time," WWF representative Alexei Knizhnikov said in a statement.

Gulum , Children's Ecological Organization, in Baku, Azerbaijan, and the ECO Institute in Omaha, Nebraska, U.S., have collaborated on a project to start an early childhood environmental education class in Baku. For the past four years, Gulum has involved kindergarten teachers and pre-school children to raise awareness of the need to protect the Kura River and the Caspian Sea from pollution. Several publications, including lessons for teachers and children's books, have been produced, classes for children and workshops for teachers have been held. Also, there has been a "mobile museum" and a video about the Caspian Sea for children living around the sea. See also ISAR , the Initiative for Social Action and Renewal in Eurasia. "Water pollution can come from a lot of different places, but the number one reason that our creeks, rivers, lakes and beaches get dirty is from the water and other pollutants that flow into storm drains. The highly successful 11th International Oil Spill Conference - Spillcon 2007 was held at the Burswood Entertainment Complex in Perth from 26 to 30 March 2007. The theme for the conference was “ Global, Regional, Local ” which highlighted the many-tiered approaches used in Australia and around the world to prevent and respond to oil spills in the marine environment. A high calibre of speakers from Australia and around the world presented on issues such as managing the risk, community expectations, aerial surveillance and developing response capabilities. The keynote address was given by Australian of the Year for 2005, Fiona Wood AM . Her inspiring insight into her life, work and the importance of preparedness through exercising emergency arrangements set the scene for the rest of the Conference. The On Water Display was held on Wednesday 28 March on the Swan River. AMSA and the WA Department for Planning and Infrastructure coordinated the display, which consisted of three components – an on water demonstration of the deployment of booms and skimmers; a static display of National Plan and State equipment; and an aerial display of a helicopter and fixed wing aircraft dispersant spraying operations and an overflight of AMSA's Perth based Dornier.

Fishpond operators, seaweed growers still await compensation

Jan. 8, 2008 The provincial government of Guimaras is not giving up on its move to ask the London-based International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund (IOPCF) to pay the compensation claims of fishpond operators and seaweed growers in the province. Rep. JC Rahman Nava, in an interview last week, said they are exhausting all the legal remedies to also include fishpond operators and seaweed growers in the oil spill compensation. IOPCF also rejected the claims of the nearly 126,000 residents of Guimaras because of some irregularities. When asked if the rejected claimants still have the chance to receive compensation, Nava said it is up to the IOPCF. The congressman said they left with the IOPCF the validation of applicants for compensation claims. He said the IOPCF have set their own criteria which is based on international standards. To note, out of the 125,614 second batch claimants from Guimaras, only 134 were accepted and were offered compensation totaling P1.4 million.

M/V Cosco Busan Oil Spill (San Francisco Bay) Information
(Information on this page is considered to be accurate at the time of posting,
but is subject to change as new information becomes available and conditions change.) On November 7, 2007 the out-bound container ship M/V Cosco Busan collided with the San Francisco Bay Bridge spilling 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel oil into San Francisco Bay. The spill has caused catastrophic oil impacts on coastal and marine resources: oiling hundreds of migratory birds and wildlife, oiling wetlands and other sensitive habitats, closing beaches and marinas, and closing fisheries. See a map-view of the bay and coastal areas impacted by the spill, and the recovery and resource protection efforts underway. The outpouring of public concern to help protect their coastal resources has been amazing, with more than 1500 people volunteering and coming out to clean beaches and care for the rescued oiled birds.

On 18 March, 1967 the 'Torrey Canyon' struck Pollard's Rock in the Seven Stones reef between the Scilly Isles and Land's End, England. She was the first of the big supertankers, carrying a cargo of 120,000 tons of oil. The oil leaked from the ship (31,000,000 gallons) and spread along the sea between England and France, killing most of the marine life it touched along the whole of the south coast of Britain and the Normandy shores of France, and blighting the region for many years thereafter. Because nobody had planned for this, all sorts of emergency measures were attempted, many of which made matters worse; lots of chemical dispersants were eventually sprayed onto the oil slicks, but these were more lethal for life than the original oil. What follows is a brief story about why it happened , emphasising only the important ergonomics issues (and leaving out many other important issues). Your health warning: The official report is very thick, and comprehensive. This story discusses some of the ergonomics aspects only, and is not a precis of the report. (Photo: Jeff Riedel) O What Seggos discovered—or rediscovered—wasn’t an oil spill, exactly. Rather, it was a mix of gasoline, solvents, and associated poisons bubbling up from the very ground: a thin dribble that betrays the presence of a supertanker’s worth of the stuff submerged in the age-old geology of Greenpoint. It’s actually more than a century’s worth of spills, leaks, and waste dumped by oil companies that has pooled into a vast underground lake, more than 55 acres wide and up to 25 feet thick. First discovered by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1978, the Greenpoint spill has been estimated at anywhere between 17 million and 30 million gallons—three times more oil than the Exxon Valdez spill. That makes it the largest known oil spill in American history.

But now ERIKA receives a certificate from the Italian state maritime agency: The same certificate behind which the French owner of the cargo of 20,000 tons of heavy crude oil, TotalFina-Elf, hides himself, saying he was in good faith when he chartered ERIKA for what would be its last journey.
