Mollusca
Latin molluscus = soft Soft bodied animals with a hard external shell (mussels, winkles, snails), or an internal shell (sea hares, cuttlefish) or have lost their shell in the course of evolution (nudibranchs). Molluscs have a mantle that secretes the calcium carbonate that makes up the shell. They inhabit numerous different environments with a large number living in the sea. Octopuses and squids have evolved to intelligent mobile forms with complex behaviour.

CLEMAM is a taxonomically oriented database of the marine Mollusca of Europe and adjacent areas ( view the map of coastal sectors
The database lists the species currently accepted as valid ( V , and boldface display), thence for each one its basionym ( , original reference where the specific name was introduced) and all synonyms ( ) and questionable synonyms ( ) known to the CLEMAM editor. Subsequent references to the species are not exhaustive; these include "chresonyms" ( X , references to the species, using the valid name, or one of its synonyms or combinations), and misidentifications ( , references in which the valid name of another species is misapplied).
Page references are given for all entries registered after 1995, and are being completed gradually for the initial batch, where only a statement of the name, author and date of publication were given.
There are currently about 17.000 references, of which ca. 3500 are valid names.

Phylum Mollusca
Coelomate Animals Molluscs are coelomate animals, that is, they possess a body cavity between the gut and the body wall that is completely lined by mesoderm tissue. The coelom serves several important functions, such as providing space for the development and function of complex internal organs and providing a hydrostatic skeleton to facilitate the movements of soft-bodied animals. All of the rest of the phyla we will study this quarter are also coelomate. Recall that coelomates are subdivided into two groups: molluscs, annelids, and arthropods are protostome coelomates . The protostomes are distinguished by the fact that the mouth of these organisms is formed from the first opening in the embryonic gut. You may remember this first opening is called the blastopore and is formed during the gastrula stage of development. In contrast, the echinoderms and chordates are deuterostome coelomates . In deuterostomes the blastopore forms the anus, and the mouth is formed from a second embryonic opening. Keep in mind that grouping animals by these and other developmental similarities gives a clearer picture of the evolutionary relationships of organisms that externally may appear very dissimilar. (Review Buschbaum Chap. 24 for this discussion.)
Mollusca Taxonomy Molluscs are a very large group that includes such diverse animals as chitons ( Class Polyplacophora ), clams, mussels, scallops, oysters (

"Next to Arthropoda, the phylum Mollusca has the most named species in the animal kingdom probably about 50,000 living species, not to mention some 35,000 fossil species discovered to date. The name Mollusca indicates one of their distinctive characteristics: a soft body." Hickman, C.P. and L.S. Roberts. 1994. Biology of Animals, Sixth Edition . Wm.C.Brown Publishers: Dubuque, Iowa. • Body bilaterally symmetrical (bilateral asymmetry in some); unsegmented, usually with definite head; Ventral body wall specialized as a muscular foot , variously modified but used chiefly for locomotion; Dorsal body wall forms the mantle , which encloses the mantle cavity , is modified into gills or a lung , and secretes the shell shell absent in some); Surface epithelium usually ciliated and bearing mucous glands and sensory nerve endings; Coelom mainly limited to area around heart Complex digestive system; rasping organ (

Are there any signs that distinguish Molluscum from genital warts/any way to tell if you have one or the other? Dear Reader, Mollusca usually do have some distinguishing characteristics that allow dermatologists and other health care professionals to diagnose them on sight. They are typically small (about 2 to 5 millimeters across), skin-colored bumps that appear either singly or in groups on the face, neck, chest, stomach, and groin area. Mollusca are harmless, painless, and itch-free bumps that are caused by a pox virus. Mollusca can be spread to other areas on one's self, or to others, by direct contact with the infected skin. These bumps are most often seen on children, especially those who have asthma or eczema, but can also be found on young adults as well. Molluscum typically starts as a single raised bump (that can be mistaken for a small mole or pimple). It can eventually proliferate into groups (known as crops) that may spread in straight lines where scratching or other irritation has spread the virus. If left alone, they will disappear without a trace (provided you don't scratch or pick at them enough to cause infection or scarring), usually within a year to a year-and-a-half.

Chitons The Conscientious Marine Aquarist Mollusks: An Overview by Bob Fenner A Cyphoma gibbosum feeding on a fan The myriad mix of animals we call mollusks; clams really big and small, Chitons, octopus, snails, abalone, oysters, nudibranchs, sea hares, nautilus, squid, tusk shells and many more, are finally starting to get their due with marine aquarists. With improvements in water quality, foods, and collecting, transportation and handling technology what were once sure losers are being kept for months to years. I am amazed at the parallel worlds of aquarium and "shell-collecting" interests. In late 1994, I was privileged to present my views to the Southern California Marine Aquarium Conference on issues of the ethics, and government control of marine livestock trade practices. One weekend later, I gave almost the identical talk to the annual meeting of the Conchologists of America, Inc. (a national organization of shell collectors). Our concerns are the same; no one wants to see the natural resource/environment negatively impacted by their participation; neither group sees the real use of government intervention. You may have a total disinterest in mollusks up to this point, but should be aware of them as a group. If for no other reasoning than they may "show up" in your system as "extras" on live rock, macro-algae, other invertebrates or foods. Many are predatory on other invertebrates; anemones, sea urchins, other mollusks, and even fishes. A few can be fatally dangerous to the aquarist.
