  • Conduct association studies of common mitochondrial genetic variants with worldwide epidemic type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using DNA analysis of different Israeli populations at the large sampling size level. In this study, we found association of common mtDNA genetic variants with the propensity to develop certain T2DM complications in Ashkenazi Jews. Following the view of the field of personalized medicine, our findings will assist in the design of efficient therapeutic approaches to diabetes taking ethnicity into account.
  • Develop a method to investigate possible subtle differences in mitochondrial performance in cells carrying different mitochondrial genetic backgrounds.
