What is mining?
Mining is the extraction (removal) of minerals and metals from earth. Manganese, tantalum, cassiterite, copper, tin, nickel, bauxite (aluminum ore), iron ore, gold, silver, and diamonds are just some examples of what is mined. Why mine? Mining is a money making business. Not only do mining companies prosper, but governments also make money from revenues. Workers also receive income and benefits. What are the minerals and metals used for? Minerals and metals are very valuable commodities. For example, manganese is a key component of low-cost stainless steel. It is also used to de-color glass (removing greenish hues), but in higher concentrations, it actually makes lavendar-colored glass. Tantalum is used in cell phones, pagers, and lap-tops. Cooper and tin are used to make pipes, cookware, etc. And gold, silver, and diamonds are used to make jewelry. Large scale mining versus small scale mining:
  • Large scale mining usually involves a company with many employees. The company mines at one or two large sites and usually stays until the mineral or metal is completely excavated. An example of a large scale mine is the Serra Pelada mine in Brazil which yielded 29,000 tons of gold from 1980 to 1986 and employed 50,000 workers (Kricher, 1997).

MINING INDUSTRY INFORMATION
On The Web Since 1994 Mine Engineer.Com has information on mining, minerals, coal, mineral processing, coal preparation, equipment used in the mining and process industries as well as other related topics. Very few of the articles we use in every day life would exist, if mining and mineral processing did not provide the basic ingredients to produce them.

Which Party Gets the Buzz?
By forming a query out of the candidate names for each party:
  • (clinton OR obama OR edwards OR gravel OR kucinich) (giuliani OR huckabee OR keyes OR mccain OR paul OR romney OR thompson)
and combining this with terms that are commonly used around the presidential election:
  • (president OR presidential OR campaign OR election OR primary OR primaries)
we can get some understanding of where attention lies at the party level. The graph above suggests that until November both parties were getting a similar amount of attention. Prior to the first batch of primaries, the Republican candidates were getting a little more, but the Democratic race may be proving a more engaging topic than the Republican one. You can play around with this query to see where attention lies for different issues by adding in terms such as +health, +war, +iraq, +immigration, etc.

Machine Perception and Learning of Complex Social Systems
Reality Mining defines the collection of machine-sensed environmental data pertaining to human social behavior. This new paradigm of data mining makes possible the modeling of conversation context, proximity sensing, and temporospatial location throughout large communities of individuals. Mobile phones (and similarly innocuous devices) are used for data collection, opening social network analysis to new methods of empirical stochastic modeling. The original Reality Mining experiment is one of the largest mobile phone projects attempted in academia. Our research agenda takes advantage of the increasingly widespread use of mobile phones to provide insight into the dynamics of both individual and group behavior. By leveraging recent advances in machine learning we are building generative models that can be used to predict what a single user will do next, as well as model behavior of large organizations. We have captured communication, proximity, location, and activity information from 100 subjects at MIT over the course of the 2004-2005 academic year. This data represents over 350,000 hours (~40 years) of continuous data on human behavior. Such rich data on complex social systems have implications for a variety of fields. The research questions we are addressing include:

Roman Deep-vein Mining

Table of Contents
Introduction
The Romans mined for metals in every part of their empire. They sought both utilitarian metals such as iron, copper, tin, and lead, and the precious metals gold and silver. The desire for mineral resources may even have affected foreign policy. Before he invaded, Caesar knew of the rich tin deposits in Britain, a metal used in the production of bronze and in limited supply elsewhere in the empire [Caesar, 5.12]. Return to Roman Deep-Vein Mining
Types of Roman mining
Despite these limitations, it is possible to develop a picture of Roman mining. The Romans employed three techniques to recover the metals. Pliny describes them "Gold in our part of the world ... is found in three ways: first, in river deposits. ... No gold is more refined, for it is thoroughly polished by the very flow of the stream and by wear. The other methods are to mine it in excavated shafts or to look for it in the debris of undermined mountains." [XXXIII 66; Humphrey, et al.

We are hiring creative computer scientists who love programming, and Machine Learning is one the focus areas of the office. If you might be interested, feel welcome to send me email: awm@google.com . The following links point to a set of tutorials on many aspects of statistical data mining, including the foundations of probability, the foundations of statistical data analysis, and most of the classic machine learning and data mining algorithms. These include classification algorithms such as decision trees, neural nets, Bayesian classifiers, Support Vector Machines and cased-based (aka non-parametric) learning. They include regression algorithms such as multivariate polynomial regression, MARS, Locally Weighted Regression, GMDH and neural nets. And they include other data mining operations such as clustering (mixture models, k-means and hierarchical), Bayesian networks and Reinforcement Learning. I hope they're useful (and please let me know if they are, or if you have suggestions or error-corrections).

Marti Hearst
SIMS,UC Berkeley
hearst@sims.berkeley.edu October 17, 2003 I wrote this essay for people who are curious about the topic of text mining after having read the New York Times article by Lisa Guernsey (10/16/2003) or heard my Future Tense interview with Jon Gordon (10/20/2003). What is text mining? What are its potential applications and limitations? Text Mining is the discovery by computer of new, previously unknown information, by automatically extracting information from different written resources. A key element is the linking together of the extracted information together to form new facts or new hypotheses to be explored further by more conventional means of experimentation. Text mining is different from what we're familiar with in web search. In search, the user is typically looking for something that is already known and has been written by someone else. The problem is pushing aside all the material that currently isn't relevant to your needs in order to find the relevant information. In text mining, the goal is to discover heretofore unknown information, something that no one yet knows and so could not have yet written down.
