The Samuel Roberts Noble Electron Microscopy Laboratory houses the most sophisticated collection of electron microscopes in the State, with a current capital value of nearly $3.1 million. Use of the facility is primarily for university instruction and for researcher at all levels of sophistication, but clients from other universities, foundations and industry are welcome to use this equipment, as well. The facility is run principally as a user facility, encouraging clients to participate fully in preparing and observing their materials. Use of the instruments may require a nominal charge that partially reimburses our maintenance and operations costs. Usage may be arranged with the staff or Director.

Environmental SEM
Philips SEM 515 ... Field-Emission Environmental SEM FEI/Philips XL30 can be used for almost any kind of specimen:
1. Wet specimens: humidity in the specimen chamber can be as high as 100%, making it possible to observe live cells, dissolving and drying processes, etc. (Images)
2. Non-conductive specimens without coating can be observed in "wet" mode with high resolution imaging and EDS capabilities for elemental analysis.

Above the array is a camera and 1:1 macro lens. A light field as recorded by the arrangement at left. The specimen is a 200-micron-tall "tower" of fluorescent crayon wax, photographed without a cover slip. Panning sequence. Since microscope optics are orthographic, perspective views like these cannot normally be seen by them. Focal stack. Using deconvolution, this 3D stack can be converted into a 3D (cross-sectional) volume; see example at bottom.
Overview
Light field photography is an image-based technique for recording scene appearance. Unlike conventional photography, light fields permit manipulation of viewpoint and focus after the imagery has been recorded. Devices for capturing light fields range in scale from room-size arrays of cameras to a handheld camera in which a microlens array has been inserted between the main lens and sensor plane.
