(Image courtesy of CDC/ Janice Carr.) Highlights of this Course This course introduces students to the principles of infectious agents. With an empahasis on pathobiology, lecturers chosen for their expertise and speaking ability cover a wide range of topics from Streptococcus to Fastidious Bacteria . The course also includes a Wet-lab hands-on experience Course Description The intent of this course is to introduce students to basic tactics used by microbial pathogens to establish infectious diseases. As such, students should understand that most of the principles detailed in the course will be encountered several times during the next year of studies, particularly in the Infectious Diseases unit. The topics covered in this course deal selectively with important pathogens because Medical Microbiology will not be the only exposure of the student to infectious agents. As examples, HIV is only covered in two lectures, but you will have other opportunities to review the basics of disease caused by this virus. An understanding of the principles of infectious agents calls for some hands-on experience, so this course also includes a wet~lab that most students regard as fun and painless. Some of the things learned in the wet-lab will eventually be utilized by all of you in the clinic. Participation in the lab is required for successful completion of the course, and a detailed lab summary will be required of all students after the last lab session.

What Is Microbiology? Microbiology is the study (logy) of very small (micro) living (bio) things. Microbiology is the study of microorganisms. These "bugs" include: bacteria (that's the Latin plural for bacterium); viruses (that's the non-Latin plural for virus - virii sounds weird, so I don't say it); and, fungi (that's the Latin plural for fungus - which by now you have guessed, or already knew, and may not be all that interested to know, anyway). Microbiology is actually made up of several sub-disciplines. Microbiology is the branch of science dealing with microorganisms. It is one of the most relevant, dynamic and exciting disciplines in the biological sciences. Microorganisms benefit society by cycling inorganic and organic matter into molecules needed for life and detoxifying discarded wastes. Historically, they have served as microscopic factories for the production of cheeses, alcohol and antibiotics. Microorganisms have also been engineered to produce a wide variety of products for our benefit through the emergence of biotechnology. Microorganisms have, however, also inflicted great distress to human, animal and plant populations through disease, spoilage of crops, foods and the fouling and degradation of man-made structures. More recently, microorganisms have been used as terrorist weapons.

Microbiology Program Overview The Microbiology Program offers a wide variety of research opportunities with emphasis on the mechanisms of viral and bacterial pathogenesis, host defense mechanisms, microbial and molecular genetics, oncogenesis, growth factors and cytokines and regulation of gene expression. The faculty has 38 full-time and adjunct members located in the Department of Microbiology at the NYU Medical Center. Approximately 32 full-time doctoral students, i.e., Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. candidates, and 30 postdoctoral fellows conduct research in the Department with research technicians and other support staff. The research environment is enhanced by visiting scientists from the United States and abroad and an active summer research program for undergraduate students from colleges and universities throughout the country. In collaboration with the Department of Medical and Molecular Parasitology and with other faculty from the Departments of Biochemistry, Medicine and Pathology, the Department of Microbiology administers an interdisciplinary NIH Training Program in Basic Microbiological Processes in Infectious Diseases. The purpose of this program is to offer comprehensive training in the basic mechanisms of infectious disease to pre- and postdoctoral students.

About the Section The Section of Microbiology in the College of Biological Sciences at UC Davis has a long and distinguished history , which began in 1952 when the Department of Bacteriology was formed. The Section is home to a diverse faculty whose research reflects the interdisciplinary nature of microbiology. Current faculty members utilize molecular genetics to study the biology of individual microbes and also use microbial and non-microbial models for the study of specific cellular processes, including recombination, stress responses, aging, cancer, DNA repair, and adaptive mutation. Research on various aspects of microbial development, host-microbe interactions, microbial metabolism, gene regulation and genomics are ongoing in a diverse range of bacteria and eukaryotic microbes. Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is to conduct the best possible research and provide the most rigorous and inspiring training in the areas of microbiology, immunology, host-pathogen interaction and related fields. Through such activities, our goal is to improve human and animal health as well as to improve our ability to be responsible stewards of a fragile earth. Through this website, we hope to present an overview of our research and training activities and to inspire like-minded individuals to join us in our quest. about us The Department of Microbiology and Immunology is a community of over 200 individuals, all of whom share a common passion for research and learning. We have over 25 faculty among our ranks, ~50 graduate students, over 100 post-doctoral fellows, ~25 research, administrative and support staff and ~25 undergraduate and medical students working in labs. About 40% of our faculty have an M.D. and 70% a Ph.D. with most also holding joint appointments in other departments in the School. The Department was founded almost 100 years ago and has gone by a number of names since that time, each reflecting a particular stage in the evolution of medicine and the life sciences. Our current name was granted by the University in 1987 when the Department made a major push to expand its focus into the complex interplay between microbe and host. This is a unifying theme that permeates the Department’s research and teaching and that only seems to be growing in relevance with each passing year.

Departmental Mission
The Department of Microbiology at UT Knoxville is dedicated to providing the quality education, through both teaching and research, necessary to meet the needs of this growing field. Our faculty members aggressively pursue research in many areas of the science: immunology; virology; microbial ecology and pathology; microbial genetics; and others. Research projects are continuously conducted through collaboration with and support from various prominent sources, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the United States Department of Energy (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), National Science Foundation (NSF), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and NASA, among others. Undergraduate students gain valuable experience in the lab by working under one of the professors; faculty also work extensively with post-graduate level students, often publishing numerous articles on their collaborative experimentation and study. Focus may be on such notable areas as herpes virus or coronavirus research, on studying the impact of viruses on marine and freshwater food webs, or on sequencing genes in pathogenic fungi.
