Meteorology Program 3010 Agronomy Hall A major in Geology prepares you for a professional career and/or graduate study in geological sciences. Students studying geology as a major will elect an option in traditional geology or environmental geology/hydrogeology. An Earth Science major is a broad program that typically emphasizes an interdisciplinary field. Programs leading to a degree may be individually designed but will include required courses in geology and meteorology, and required supporting work in chemistry, physics and mathematics. The emphasis of the Bachelor of Science degree program in Meteorology is on developing a broad understanding of the fundamental physical and dynamic processes governing the motions and behavior of the atmosphere as a fluid system. Basic courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics are prerequisites to the meteorology program and are considered the foundation courses on which the meteorology program is built.

Weather or Not?
Meteorology is the science of the atmosphere and the variations in atmospheric conditions that produce weather. Meteorologists are the people who study weather. Throughout history, people have been fascinated and awed by the power of nature. As a result, people have tried to predict the weather so that they might control it. Ben Franklin made some of the first recorded weather forecasts in Poor Richard's Almanack . If you have cable television, you already know that the Weather Channel broadcasts nothing but weather reports, twenty-four hours a day. Clearly, people care about the weather. What's the weather like today? Once upon a time, people answered that question by looking outside. Today, we watch television or listen to the radio. Meteorologists use advanced computer and satellite technology to get instant weather reports. At any moment, we can know the weather. What will the weather be like tomorrow? That question is a little tougher. Once upon a time, people had no idea what future weather would be. Today, we can get reliable weather forecasts and warnings. Meteorologists track storms in order to warn people of approaching danger. We can't control the weather, but we can control some of its destruction. While Ben Franklin chased storms on horseback, modern meteorologists chase storms from high-tech weather centers using computerized data obtained by satellite.

Find out how our atmosphere is far more substantial than most people think.
That's because it has…
All kinds of stuff
Catch a glimpse of blue sky, lightning, sun beams, a cloud or two, perhaps stretching downward towards earth, and even a trail of smoke or many colors. Invisible currents.
Maybe something more threatening, or completely unfamiliar...not UFO's here but interesting stuff anyway. Learn a bit of the science behind weather. Technology too.

INVESTIGATIONS
  • What is the relationship between altitude and temperature? What is the relationship between latitude and temperature? In which direction and how fast does weather move? What are the atmospheric readings as a H (High) or a L (Low) approaches and departs a reporting station? ... What areas of the U.S. would most likely be affected by acid rain? Why? The success of a forecaster in finding employment is primarily dependent upon educational background, experience and professional accomplishments. The advantages and disadvantages for each of these fields are given below. The advantages and disadvantages are most relevant to students beginning full-time employment for the first time in meteorology and that have a strong meteorological education. Meteorology
Meteorology is the scientific study of the atmosphere that focuses on weather processes and forecasting. Meteorological phenomena are observable weather events which illuminate and are explained by the science of meteorology. Those events are bound by the variables that exist in Earth's atmosphere. They are temperature, pressure, water vapor, and the gradients and interactions of each variable, and how they change in time. The majority of Earth's observed weather is located in the troposphere. The applications of meteorology include military meteorology which grew in importance during the 20th century. Meteorology, climatology, atmospheric physics, and atmospheric chemistry are sub-disciplines of the atmospheric sciences. Meteorology and hydrology comprise the interdiscplinary field of hydrometeorology. History of Meteorology 350 BC - The term meteorology comes from Aristotle's Meteorology. Although the term meteorology is used today to describe a subdiscipline of the atmospheric sciences, Aristotle's work is more general. The work touches upon much of what is known as the earth sciences. In his own words:
...all the affections we may call common to air and water, and the kinds and parts of the earth and the affections of its parts.

    NWA Meteorology
Northwest Airlines Meteorology is known throughout the airline industry for excellence in turbulence forecasting. We provide flight crews, dispatchers, planners and ground crews with the information needed to keep the passengers and crew informed and safe from various weather hazards. Through our innovative TP (Turbulence Plot) Program, information about clear air turbulence, wind shears, thunderstorms, mountain waves and volcanic ash is uplinked directly to the cockpit by Northwest Airlines meteorologists 24 hours a day every day of the year. Meteorologists prepare upper air weather depictions that forecast possible areas of clear air turbulence and mountain wave activity. This gives the flight crews and dispatchers the extra time necessary to reroute traffic around these weather hazards, which are often difficult or impossible to see while in flight. Surface depictions are also prepared and updated throughout the day showing the position of fronts and forecasting possible thunderstorm activity.
