Stainless Steels - Material Properties Online Data
The austenitic stainless steels are characterized by a unique combination of material properties. The austenitic stainless steels have found a wide application field because of the superior properties and many new applications are expected to arise in future. These are the most important characteristics: high corrosion resistance, high ductility and impact resistance even at the lowest temperatures, good formability, high strength at elevated temperatures, good weldability and ease of cleaning. Some applications find use of the non-magnetic character or of the high strength achieved through coldworking due to a high strain hardening capability too. Discussion Forum on Stainless Steels is open. Welcome to participate on it!

Bangalore-560012, India
The Department of Materials Engineering (formerly Department of Metallurgy) was established in the year 1945 and is dedicated to the advancement of education and research in metallurgy and materials engineering. It had initiated teaching programmes at the bachelor's degree level and master's degree level in 1947 and 1964 respectively. The first ever research conferment in metallurgy in India, A.I.I.Sc., was made in 1951. The first doctoral degree was awarded in 1971 and the first D.Sc. degree was awarded in 1992. The Silver Jubilee of the department was celebrated in 1972 with twin International Symposia on "Defect Interactions in Solids" and "Industrial Metallurgy". During 1996-97, the Golden Jubilee of the department was celebrated by conducting a lecture series, National and International Symposia. The Department celebrated 2006-07 as Diamond Jubilee Year with several events including a symposium on Advances in Materials Engineering. On this occasion the name was changed to the Department of Materials Engineering. The department has been recognised as a "Centre for Advanced Study" by the University Grants Commission since 1990.

Introduction Powder metallurgy
uses sintering process for making various parts out of metal powder. The metal powder is compacted by placing in a closed metal cavity (the die) under pressure. This compacted material is placed in an oven and sintered in a controlled atmosphere at high temperatures and the metal powders coalesce and form a solid. A second pressing operation, repressing, can be done prior to sintering to improve the compaction and the material properties. The properties of this solid are similar to cast or wrought materials of similar composition. Porosity can be adjusted by the amount of compaction. Usually single pressed products have high tensile strength but low elongation. These properties can be improved by repressing as in the following table. Material Tensile

The branch's research is directed toward understanding metallic materials by controlling phase transformations, microstructure, and atomic ordering. We study the fundamental mechanisms associated with basic phenomena in metals and alloys. The influence of microstructure and defects - such as vacancies, dislocations, internal interfaces, and impurity atoms - are correlated with mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. Microstructure and Phase Transformations. Efforts are aimed at modeling phase-transformation behavior and grain-growth in terms of atomic mechanisms. Experimental characterization includes morphology, crystallography, formation mechanisms, kinetics, and overall microstructural evolution behavior by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Electron Backscatter-Pattern Analysis (EBSP) with Orientation Imaging Microscopy (OIM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) and optical microscopy. Emphasis is on model ferrous alloys, high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels used in Navy applications, rapidly solidified ultrahigh carbon steels, commercial aluminum alloys, magnetic thin films and high-temperature superconductors.

THE WORLD HERITAGE SITE OF MACHU PICCHU:

the danger which threatens Machu Picchu NOW
Editorial : The new hotel complex could bring thousands more people to Machu Picchu. Peru needs the economic services from tourism. The question is will the ruins of Machu Picchu be safe? Machu Picchu is a glorious place to see and reflect. If the new hotel can encourage more people to visit the ruins, then it may be okay. If however, the ruins will not be geological safe, then there's no question, the construction of the hotel complex should be stopped. I question the projected number of visitors to the ruins. It has been estimated that as many as 4000 per day may visit! I believe this number is several times what can be allowed, should be less than 1,000. The high altitude places physical restrictions on visitors to the mountainous area.
