Ancient Metallurgy
A Beginner's Guide
Metallurgy is the process of working metal into artifacts (tools and toys). Although small amounts of metals are found in relatively pure form, most must be extracted from more complex ores by removing the "impurities" (non-metal or other metal) from the combination ore. Over the centuries, smiths have used a range of techniques to process metal. This page begins with a discussion of copper bronze , and of iron and steel , followed by brief discussions of lead gold , and silver . The page then discusses metalworking methods
Materials: Copper
As it comes from the mine, copper, like other mined metals, is quite impure.
Private Collection Copper (abbreviated Cu) is a relatively soft, pinkish-reddish metalic element. It is technically a "transitional element" rather than a metal, although it is conveniently regarded as a metal in historical contexts. One of the most common carbonates of copper is malachite , which was used in antiquity as a gem stone. Copper is generally corosion-resistant, but when it is exposed to air, the exposed surface oxidizes, changing the red-pink color, or interacts with ambient sulphur to produce a thin "patina" of blue-green copper-sulphate.

    Course Description
This course examines how the presence of 1-, 2- and 3D defects and second phases control the mechanical, electromagnetic and chemical behavior of metals and alloys. It considers point, line and interfacial defects in the context of structural transformations including annealing, spinodal decomposition, nucleation, growth, and particle coarsening. In addition, it concentrates on structure-function relationships, and in particular how grain size, interstitial and substitutional solid solutions, and second-phase particles impact mechanical and other properties. Examples include microelectronic circuitry, magnetic memory and drug delivery applications.

Definition: Metallurgy , when used by archaeologists, is the study of the ancient processes of producing objects made of metal, including quarrying, mine construction, and smelting. The earliest form of metallurgy was hammering copper. Native copper was first used by Old World Neolithic people beginning about the 8th millennium BC; and by New World in South American cultures beginning about 1500 BC. The next step, smelting (again of copper) appeared at Catal Hoyuk in Turkey, about 6000 BC; lead appears to have been added to the metal working about this same time. Mining of native materials began about 5000 BC. The earliest gold so far is from Varna in Bulgaria, about the same time. Goldworking in the Americas is found in Colombia and Peru about 100 AD.

    Forensic Metallurgy
Metallurgical Examination of WTC Steel Suggests Explosives
Although virtually all of the structural steel from the Twin Towers and Building 7 was removed and destroyed , preventing forensic analysis, FEMA's volunteer investigators did manage to perform "limited metallurgical examination" of some of the steel before it was recycled. Their observations, including numerous micrographs, are recorded in Appendix C of the WTC Building Performance Study . Prior to the release of FEMA's report, a fire protection engineer and two science professors published a brief report in JOM disclosing some of this evidence. The results of the examination are striking. They reveal a phenomenon never before observed in building fires: eutectic reactions, which caused "intergranular melting capable of turning a solid steel girder into Swiss cheese." The New York Times described this as "perhaps the deepest mystery uncovered in the investigation."

The PMRC consortium (M. Boorky Center) promotes the manufacturing excellence and competitiveness of the powder metallurgy (P/M) industry by undertaking research programs that are consistent with the priorities of the industry. PMRC acts as an independent catalyst for industrial innovation and the exchange of information and ideas in powder metallurgy technology and management. It also serves as an educational center by disseminating research results to consortium members (and, eventually, to the P/M industry at large), and by developing courses and continuing education programs that address the educational needs of the industry.
