The Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC) is used to categorize items covered by the two reviewing databases, Mathematical Reviews (MR) and Zentralblatt MATH (Zbl). The MSC is broken down into over 5,000 two-, three-, and five-digit classfications, each corresponding to a discipline of mathematics (e.g., 11 = Number theory; 11B = Sequences and sets; 11B05 = Density, gaps, topology). The current classification system, 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC2000), is a revision of the 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification, which is the classification that has been used by MR and Zbl since the beginning of 1991. MSC2000 is the result of a collaborative effort by the editors of MR and Zbl to update the classification. The editors acknowledge the many helpful suggestions from the mathematical community during the revision process. Changes at the 2-digit level Conversion Tables MSC2000 is now being revised for use in 2010. MR and Zbl welcome community input into this revision process. Comments can be submitted through the

Every culture on earth has developed some mathematics. In some cases, this mathematics has spread from one culture to another. Now there is one predominant international mathematics, and this mathematics has quite a history. It has roots in ancient Egypt and Babylonia, then grew rapidly in ancient Greece. Mathematics written in ancient Greek was translated into Arabic. About the same time some mathematics of India was translated into Arabic. Later some of this mathematics was translated into Latin and became the mathematics of Western Europe. Over a period of several hundred years, it became the mathematics of the world. There are other places in the world that developed significant mathematics, such as China, southern India, and Japan, and they are interesting to study, but the mathematics of the other regions have not had much influence on current international mathematics. There is, of course, much mathematics being done these and other regions, but it is not the traditional math of the regions, but international mathematics. By far, the most significant development in mathematics was giving it firm logical foundations. This took place in ancient Greece in the centuries preceding Euclid. See

    Welcome!
The Brandeis Department of Mathematics combines the informality, flexibility, and general friendliness of a small department with the intellectual vigor of a faculty whose research accomplishments have placed it among the top departments in the country. Courses and seminars range from introductory classes to the frontiers of current research. In many, especially at advanced levels, faculty members will often be in the audience with students lecturing. The result is an active dialogue among all members of the department and a general air of living, creative mathematics. The student at Brandeis is fortunate to be in an area containing many first-rate universities. He or she will find a wealth of lectures, seminars, colloquia, and opportunities for contact with mathematicians at Harvard, M.I.T., Tufts, Boston University, Northeastern, and the many other local schools. This unusual concentration creates a mathematical community of unparalleled diversity and depth. In addition to mathematics, the Boston area is well known for its lively cultural and social life. The large academic population has created an active intellectual environment that provides many social and recreational opportunities.

Department of Mathematics The University of Alabama was founded in 1831 with 5 chairs; one of these was the Chair of Mathematics and Astronomy. Thus mathematics has been a central part of the University from its beginning. The Department of Mathematics offers programs leading to Bachelors, Masters, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. We offer a variety of tracks leading to the Bachelors degrees. The tracks emphasize such areas as those of pure mathematics, classical applied mathematics, numerical mathematics, optimization, mathematical statistics, and mathematics education. The Ph.D. degree is offered with areas of research emphasis in Algebra, Analysis, Applied Mathematics, and Topology. Please browse our web site to find out more about the Department and its programs.

80. Mesopotamian Mathematics
The mathematics of ancient Mesopotamia, from Sumer to Babylon.
http://it.stlawu.edu/~dmelvill/mesomath/
Mesopotamian Mathematics
The purpose of this page is to provide a source of information on all aspects of Mesopotamian mathematics. We explain the origins of mathematics in Mesopotamia from the earliest tokens, through the development of Sumerian mathematics to the grand flowering in the Old Babylonian period, and on into the later periods of Mesopotamian history. We include some general surveys to get you oriented in each period, and some more detailed resources for those interested in specific aspects of this fascinating episode in history. Like most other Web pages it is under slow construction as time permits. Some of these resources are of general interest, others are intended mainly for use by students in my History of Mathematics class.
Background
History
A very brief and biased summary of Mesopotamian (political) history. Intended to provide a context for the mathematical history in later pages.
Chronology
A summary chronology of the main periods of Mesopotamian history and the mathematics associated with them.
Overview
A short summary of the main phases of growth in Mesopotamian mathematics. The topics mentioned here will all be expanded upon in later pages.
