'Numb3rs' counts on math wiz [Gary Lorden] John Todd 1911 - 2007 Jack Todd passed away Thursday, June 21, 2007 at his home in Pasadena at the age of 96. He has been an enormously beneficial presence at the Caltech Math department for many decades, both as a professor of mathematics and as a benefactor. John and his late wife, Olga Taussky-Todd, have given to the department in many ways. Most prominently, they set up an endowed fund for distinguished visitors and just recently Jack donated funds to the Math department which we will use for the benefit of graduate students. In recognition of their generosity to the Institute, Caltech named the Taussky-Todd instructorships in mathematics in their honor. These instructorships currently constitute half of our postdoc size. For more information on Jack Todd's life please take a look at the Caltech press release People Seminars Courses Undergraduate information: Graduate program Positions you may apply for ... Completed in 1969, Carver Hall was named for one of Iowa State's most acclaimed graduates - George Washington Carver, who earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Iowa State in the 1890s and served on the Iowa State faculty.
Mathematics is central
to an advanced technological society, and the Mathematics Department at Iowa State University plays a major role in its teaching, research and service at the university.
We are dedicated
to providing high quality instruction to all students who take a mathematics course, and to imparting a basic knowledge of the subject to those students choosing mathematics as their major.
Our graduate program
offers degrees in mathematics and applied mathematics at both the M.S. and Ph.D. levels. Students can choose traditional areas such as algebra and analysis or newer disciplines such as biomathematics or information assurance. Students completing our program are successful in finding employment.
Our faculty members
are active researchers in their disciplines, developing new mathematical ideas and algorithms, and interacting with people outside their disciplines.

The Illinois Learning Standards for Mathematics were developed by Illinois teachers for Illinois schools. These goals, standards and benchmarks are an outgrowth of the 1985 Illinois State Goals for Learning influenced by the latest thinking in school mathematics. This includes the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics ; ideas underlying recent local and national curriculum projects; results of state, national, and international assessment findings; and the work and experiences of Illinois school districts and teachers. Mathematics is a language we use to identify, describe and investigate the patterns and challenges of everyday living. It helps us to understand the events that have occurred and to predict and prepare for events to come so that we can more fully understand our world and more successfully live in it. Mathematics encompasses arithmetic, measurement, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, probability and other fields. It deals with numbers, quantities, shapes and data, as well as numerical relationships and operations. Confronting, understanding and solving problems is at the heart of mathematics. Mathematics is much more than a collection of concepts and skills; it is a way of approaching new challenges through investigating, reasoning, visualizing and problem solving with the goal of communicating the relationships observed and problems solved to others.

Welcome to the Department of Mathematics
Our students and our faculty understand the unique challenges and satisfactions that the careful study of mathematics offers.
Mathematical ideas and results not only represent some of the highest accomplishments of our culture, but also are an indispensable tool in an ever-increasing array of disciplines. In this sense mathematics has a dual nature: it is both an independent field of study valued for precision of thought and intrinsic beauty, and it is a rich source of techniques and methods for the world of applications.
Here at Colorado State we take great pride in making sure that both of these aspects of mathematics are well represented in our research and our curriculum.
