Nanometer-scale voids in shear bands
Metallic glasses are alloys with highly disordered, amorphous structure, in contrast to the ordered, crystalline structure of conventional alloys. Because of this difference in structure, metallic glasses deform in unusual ways. In particular, at high stresses the deformation can be concentrated into narrow bands, called shear bands.
The micrograph shows a shear band (indicated by dashed lines) in a metallic glass. The variation in contrast is due to variations in the atomic density; in particular, the bright spots are regions of low atomic density. Most of these are due to the random nature of the structure, but quantitative analysis of the image reveals that some (colored in red) are actually nanometer-scale voids that result from the coalescence of excess free volume when the deformation ceases. This kind of microstructural analysis can lead to important insights about how deformation occurs in these novel materials.

Structure of metallic glasses from resonant x-ray scattering
Studying the structure of disordered materials such as metallic glasses is a significant challenge that requires sophisticated techniques. By making use of the resonant scattering effects at energies close to x-ray absorption edges, we can determine the atomic environments around elements of interest in our materials.

The Materials Sciences and Engineering subprogram supports basic research in condensed matter physics, metal and ceramic sciences, materials chemistry, and materials engineering. This research seeks to understand the atomistic basis of materials properties and behavior and how to make materials perform better at acceptable cost through new methods of synthesis and processing.
Basic research is supported in magnetic materials, semiconductors, superconductors, metals, ceramics, alloys, polymers, metallic glasses, ceramic matrix composites, catalytic materials, surface science, corrosion, neutron and x-ray scattering, chemical and physical properties, welding and joining, non-destructive evaluation, electron beam microcharacterization, nanotechnology and microsystems, fluid dynamics and heat transfer in materials, nonlinear systems, and new instrumentation. This subprogram is a premier sponsor of condensed matter and materials physics in the U.S. The subprogram also contains the DOE EPSCoR program.

Center News
New IGERT program started at CCMR
Released: Sep 25, 2007 ITHACA, NY The CCMR was recently awarded a NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) grant to train the next generation of scientists and engineers. Physicists, chemists, materials scientists and engineers often deal with the same problems, but they use different jargon. Talking to and collaborating with each other can be difficult, if not impossible. The new $2.9 million graduate student training program at Cornell will help bridge this problematic gap among the disciplines, in an effort to solve common problems a range of scientists face. The CCMR's IGERT fellowships will require graduate students from a variety of scientific fields to become interdisciplinary thinkers. No longer allowed to hide in their field-specific labs, the students will take weeks-long mini-courses "modules" held throughout the academic year related to the broad field of nanoscale surfaces and interfaces, taught by faculty in such different fields as chemistry and physics. Additionally, all students will gain exposure to both experimental and computational nanoscale research. "The modules will give students an introduction to how other people talk and think about the field," said CCMR director Melissa Hines, who wrote the NSF grant and enlisted about 24 faculty members as co-principal investigators. "Students will still get a firm grounding in their core discipline, while the IGERT program will give them an introduction into nanoscale interfaces as well."
