Federal Laws And Marine Mammal Viewing
The Marine Mammal Protection Act prohibits the TAKE of all marine mammal species in U.S. waters. Take means "to harass, hunt, capture, or kill, or attempt to harass, hunt, capture, or kill," and harassment means "any act of pursuit, torment, or annoyance which has the potential to injure a marine mammal or marine mammal stock in the wild; or has the potential to disturb a marine mammal or marine mammal stock in the wild by causing disruption of behavioral patterns, including, but not limited to migration, breathing, nursing, breeding, feeding, sheltering." TAKE includes feeding or attempting to feed a marine mammal in the wild. Some exceptions are made for authorized scientific research and subsistence hunting by Alaska Natives.
Marine Mammal Viewing

Marine Mammal Research Internship 2008-2009 Season The Whale Center of New England, located in Gloucester, MA, is a nonprofit research organization involved with the study of behavior, ecology, and natural history of the whales and dolphins found in the waters off of Massachusetts. Primary concentration is on an individually-identified population of humpback whales that spend portions of the spring, summer, and fall in these waters. Additional species studied in this area include fin whales, minke whales, North Atlantic right whales, sei whales and Atlantic white-sided dolphins. The Whale Center staff is also heavily involved with habitat conservation and education programs. Since the early 1980's, the Whale Center has provided annual spring, summer, and fall internships to undergraduate students who have completed their freshman year of studies and to recent college graduates. We are currently looking to fill research internships for the summer (May 19 - August 22) and fall (August 18 - December 19) semesters of 2007, and spring (Feb. 2 - May 29) semester of 2008. Key application information.

Internet: http://www.marinemammalstrandingcenter.org/ When the Marine Mammal Stranding Center was established in 1978 there were nineteen reported strandings in the State of New Jersey. Just fifteen years later the Center responded to 123. From its small base in Brigantine, the Center and its volunteers have come to the aid of more than 1,000 stranded whales, dolphins, seals, and sea turtles. Whenever possible the animals are brought back to the Center for rehabilitation and eventually released. First and foremost the Center is a refuge and hospital for marine mammals, part of a network that extends along the Atlantic coastline from Maine to Virginia. It is a membership organization that invites public participation in tracking dolphins and rescuing these and other animals when in trouble. Visitors are welcome to the Sea Life Museum , a small education facility which includes hands-on exhibits and from time to time offers marine ecology-based educational programs. Call for details. School Groups can also tour the facility and participate in a program. Teachers should call to discuss their specific needs with Center staff.
