Mammals come in all shapes and sizes, and can be found all over the earth. There are around 5500 species of mammals in all. All mammals are warm-blooded and have either hair or fur on their bodies. The majority of all mammals give birth to live young, but there are a few species of mammals that lay eggs. The Triassic period, 220 million years ago, was the age that the first mammals can be found. Humans are mammals , but are not included on this site.

Class: Mammalia by UW Green Bay students David Marks and Todd McCoy Mammals are fur-bearing animals that are capable of internal temperature regulation. With only a few exceptions, female mammals give birth to live young and feed their offspring milk from mammary glands. Mammals have the largest brains in relation to body size of any vertebrate. This places a severe limitation on offspring development at birth, since many females are to small to give birth to highly developed young, instead most mammals invest in long periods of parental care. Unlike reptiles, the mammal lower jaw is composed of a single bone, and the jaws contain 4 specialized types of teeth, the incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Mammals have 3 middle-ear bones that set up a chain of vibrations that are transmitted across a membrane to nerve receptors in the fluid filled inner ear. Mammals have been evolving and diversifying since the Triassic Period when they arose from the Synapsidae , a primitive group of amniote There are 4 major groups of mammals: the egg-laying monotremes, the metatheria or marsupials, the eutheria or placental mammals, and the now extinct

All contributors will be acknowledged. Any comments on distribution, taxonomy, personal observations, collections, or historical information are welcomed. The following mammal list is from the upcoming book "Status and Distribution of Kern County Mammals," by A. M. Sheehey. Nature Ali Publications. The purpose of this work is to disseminate accurate information about the biogeographically diverse region of Kern County. When finished it will include general status and distribution information. The listing order follows what is found in "Walker's Mammals of World" 1999, by R. M. Nowak; and subspecies nomenclature are mostly from "The Mammals of North America," 2nd ed., 1981, by E. R. Hall. English names refer to the species as a whole, unless individual subspecies have been given a common name. Species range is described briefly. Asterisks specify that the mammal's occurrence in Kern County is supported by specimens from at least one of many Natural History Museums listed at the end of this document. Taxa are presented in the phylogenetic sequence used in Walker's Mammals of the World. This checklist contains 102 species, four species are listed as endangered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, one is a federal candidate species, two are currently listed as endangered by the state of California and five are listed as threatened by the state. Additionally twelve species are considered sensitive by the federal authorities and sixteen are considered sensitive by the state of California. Two extirpated species have been reintroduced to the wilds of the county. The list includes two extinct species. Twenty taxa have been introduced and occur in sufficient numbers to be included here.

http://www.fieldmuseum.org/research_collections/zoology/collections_mammals.htm
Established in 1894, the collection of the Division of Mammals is worldwide in scope, and with 155,671 specimens, is one of the largest, most representative and most heavily used collections of mammals in the world. In terms of absolute numbers of specimens, it ranks third or fourth in the nation, and in terms of geographic and taxonomic representation, it probably ranks third in the nation and fourth in the world. More than 410 primary type specimens are included in the collection.
Over the last twenty years, major transformations have brought the mammal collection to high standards of curation. Beginning in 1975, nearly the entire collection was moved into newly-constructed quarters; nearly all of the dry collection was accommodated in new specimen cases, and sufficient space has been allocated for several decades of growth. Staff eliminated a large backlog of skeletal specimens; input, edited and verified nearly all collection data in computerized files; constructed a new, well-equipped tanned skin facility; and adopted a large "orphaned" collection of large African mammals originally collected in the 1920s. Field Museum staff have also cataloged and installed large backlogs; updated geographic information on specimens; completed verification of the dry collection; and re-identified large parts of the dry collections (with assistance from Visiting Curators).
Recent collection growth has included specimens from recent field work in East Africa (especially Madagascar, Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda), South America (especially Brazil and Chile), and Southeast Asia (especially Malaysia and the Philippines), and from a wide range of other parts of the world. Growth of the fluid-preserved collection has been especially rapid. Nearly all of these specimens have come from recent field work, with the majority coming from Southeast Asia and East Africa. Many of these represent the only fluid-preserved individuals of their species, and at least 20 newly-discovered species are included.

Have you ever thought about what makes mammal species different from other vertebrates? If not, I'm sure that you have noticed the differences between a crocodile (which belongs to the vertebrate class reptilia) and an elephant. Being a mammal myself, I have always found this particular class of vertebrates very interesting. As you will see, mammals have certain characteristics that differentiate them from other vertebrates. Let's take a look at some of these characteristics.
    Mammal Characteristics
To begin with, mammal species are in the Class Mammalia, within the Subphylum Vertebrata, under the Phylum Chordata, in the Kingdom Animalia. Now that you have that straight, let's look at some specific traits of mammals. One main characteristic that mammals have is a feature that usually stands on end in frightening situations. Can you guess what it is? Yes, it's hair or fur, which ever the case may be. This trait is useful in maintaining the constant body temperature that is important to all

    Insectivore-like mammals:
Tiny teeth and their enigmatic owners
It is widely known that placental mammals originated in the Mesozoic as small, unspecialized forms that can best be compared to the insectivores of the modern mammal fauna. Such shrew-like mammals are often imagined as the sole survivors of the events that wiped away the dinosaurs, and they are often portrayed as the kind of mammal typical of the following epoch, the Paleocene. While the mammal fauna of the Paleocene was much more varied than this simplified picture implies, insectivore-like mammals in fact made up a significant part of the earliest faunas of the Cenozoic. Before we have a closer look at those animals, some concepts about their classification need to be clarified first. Figure 1: Reconstruction of Cimolestes , a primitive insectivore-like mammal mainly known from the Late Cretaceous to Early Paleocene of North America. Since little is known of this animal beyond its teeth, the reconstruction is largely hypothetical. From (61). marsupials occupied - and still occupy today - the corresponding ecological niches (17, 18). No Paleocene faunas are known from Australia and Antarctica (still ice-free then), which were at that time connected to each other and to South America. Later faunas give no indications that placental insectivores inhabited these areas in the Early Tertiary (19). We may therefore speculate that the situation there was similar to South America.
