of Costa Rica by Christopher Baker ; created 1995 Given the rich diversity of Costa Rica's ecosystems, it may come as a surprise that there are only 200 mammal species in the nation, half of which are bats. And Costa Rica, like most neotropical countries, has "a depauperate marine mammal flora," in the words of one biologist. Several species of dolphins and seven species of whales are common in Costa Rican waters, but there are no seals. And the only endemic species of any significance is the endangered manatee. Before man hunted them to extinction, there were many more mammal species. Even today all large and many small mammal populations are subject to extreme hunting pressure or habitat destruction, and it is only recently that large-mammal populations in the national parks are beginning to recover. Like most large mammals, jaguars and tapirs are shy and stay well clear of people. Sighting one would be cause for great celebration! Still, most visitors can expect to see one or more species of monkeys, one of Costa Rica's four ecologically unique tropical mammals; the others are sloths, anteaters, and noninsectivorous bats. And luck, patience, and the aid of a professional guide can lead to thrilling encounters with other species.

Coryate claimed to see two unicorns in his travels to India. As astronomer and science historian Owen Gingerich has observed, this woodcut is trimmed, which suggests that the picture was actually copied from an earlier work (perhaps Conrad Gesner's). One reason unicorns held such fascination for medieval and Renaissance Europeans was that their horns, called alicorns, were thought to protect their owners from poison. Europe's royal families often acquired political power by poisoning their enemies, and some of the upper crust may not have been above testing their concoctions on their own family members. Year:

This small mistake, however, is more than offset by the much bigger mistake the illustration corrects. The adult males of these marine mammals have ivory tusks extending from the left side of the upper jaw. These tusks, often sold as alicorns, had long been believed to be unicorn horns.

Mammals are a group of animals with backbones, bodies covered by hair, nurse their young with milk, and have a unique jaw articulation. Mammals are also the group of animals to which humans belong. Belize has approximately 145 mammal species living within its boundaries. Mammals exist within all the different habitats of Belize, from the manatee and dolphins of the coastal zone, to the 5 different species of wildcat which live deep within the rainforests of the Maya Mountains. The rainforest mammals of Belize tend to be very secretive and mostly nocturnal. This makes them extremely difficult to see. They usually see, hear, smell, or feel you long before you them. Rainforest mammals do not stand out in the open for easy viewing, but instead climb through the canopy or scurry over the forest floor well ahead of you. That is one reason the Belize Zoo is such a special place. Here you can see many of the rainforest species of Belize easily. A visit to the zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the animals of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. We hope this website will be the next best thing to visiting us in person.

A first contribution was "Chapter 6 - Mammals" in Species of Special Concern in Pennsylvania. In 1989 the Mammal Technical Committee, along with the Ornithological Technical Committee, was designated byt he Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) as an official scientific advisory committee to the Commission. Under the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Biological Survey and the PGC, representatives of these two technical committees and the Game Commission meet annually to discuss matters relating to the Commonwealth's mammals and birds. Since publication of Species of Special Concern in Pennsylvania, the committee had undertaken a number of research initiatives, several of which were funded by grants from the Pennsylvania Wild Resource Conservation Fund. The results of two of these projects, a comprehensive assessment of the statuses of the mammals of Pennsylvania and a survey of the Statuses of Pennsylvania's cave-dwelling bats, were published in the Journal of the Pennsylvania Academy of Science. Other committee initiatives have included work on the statuses of solitary tree bats in southcentral and northern Pennsylvania, effeorts to determine the status of the least shrew (

32. Mammals
A brief discussion of mammals, focusing on how they are evolutionarily advanced over other animal types.
http://www.backyardnature.net/mammals.htm
MAMMALS
IN GENERAL R eptiles arose from amphibians, and birds arose from reptiles. However, mammals, such as the Armadillo shown above in my backyard, did not arise from birds. Mammals, like birds, arose from early reptiles, though from a different reptilian stock than the birds. Here are the main "new inventions" nature came up with that made us mammals more complex beings than amphibians, reptiles and birds:
  • Mammals, like birds, but unlike their reptilian ancestors, are warm-blooded their bodies stay warm, even when surrounded by cold air. Mammal bodies are covered with hair, which helps the body stay warm; even the Armadillo above has hairs. Mammal teeth come in a variety of shapes, known as incisors, canines, premolars and/or molars, with each tooth type specialized for stabbing, cutting, tearing, or grinding of food. Reptilian teeth aren't nearly as diverse. Mammal ears are relatively complex, the middle ear containing three bones, as opposed to only one bone in the middle ear of reptiles and birds. Mammal brains are much larger than those of reptiles, enabling greater intelligence and consequent flexibility of behavior.

http://www.shsu.edu/~bio_mlt/mammals.html
MAMMALIAN CHARACTERISTICS Many of the most important and diagnostic mammalian characteristics serve to further intelligence and sensibility, promote endothermy, or to increase the efficiency of reproduction or the securing and processing of food. Basic structural body plan is inherited from Therapsid mammal-like reptiles. Survival through mammalian evolution was perhaps due to their ability to move and to think more quickly than their Archosaurian counterparts. Morphological trends were toward structural simplification:
• skull and jaw bones lost or reduced in size
• limbs and limb girdles simplified, reduced, and less laterally splayed Fossil record provides little evidence on when endothermy actually developed. Diagnostic or Distinguishable Characteristics of Mammals: Soft Tissues
Skin glands:
Mammalian skin contains several kinds of glands not found in other vertebrates.
Mammary Glands: Provide nourishment for the young during their postnatal period of rapid growth.
Milk Composition: Milk composition varies with species:
Cow’s milk 85% H2O
Dry weight 20% Fat
20% Proteins
60% Sugars - largely lactose
also have sweat, sebaceous, scent, and musk glands

Mammals What is a Mammal? Mammals are animals that are born with fur or hair. Mammals produce live young which they nourish with milk. They are warm-blooded and have the most highly developed nervous system of all the animals. A mammal usually has four limbs and a four-chambered heart. The largest mammal is the blue whale at 100 feet in length. The smallest mammals are shrews, mice, and bats. Many are less than two inches long, excluding the tail length. Click on the name of the animal below to see a picture of its tracks and some natural history information about it. I have also included some personal notes about each species. INTRODUCING THE MAMMALS!
You are a mammal. Your pet dogs and cats are mammals. An elephant is a mammal and so is a whale. When you learn about animals, the first you learn about are probably mammals. Not all mammals are made the same way. Most of the mammals you see will be placental . If you are in Australia you will see a lot of marsupials. Monotremes are tough to find. There aren't many of those left in the world.
    MAMMALS WITH EGGS
Monotremes were the first mammals. How do scientists know? They actually lay eggs . Monotremes are more closely related to reptiles than any other mammal. They have not yet evolved a way to have their babies live. Examples of monotremes are a duck-billed platypus and the spiny anteater.
    MAMMALS WITH POUCHES
There are many more marsupials than monotremes. Kangaroos, koalas, bandicoots, and possums. You'll find a lot of them in Australia. Australia is an island continent. Because of its isolation, placental mammals didn't take hold in their ecosystems. Australia is like a mammalian time capsule. Marsupials are special mammals that give birth to their young live, but the babies mature in pouches . While they are in the pouch they suckle on the mother's milk for nourishment.
    LIKE YOU AND ME
Placental mammals are the dominant form of mammal on the planet. Placental mammals deliver their young live and ready for action. Although the babies might still need some work, much of the basic development is done inside of the female's
