PhlatLight Technology
Invented and manufactured by Luminus Devices, PhlatLight technology is a new type of solid state light source that combines the benefits of both LED and laser technologies. This unique solid state lighting technology is ideal for display and illumination applications that require high brightness and the efficient harnessing of light from a small point source. Photonic Lattice Background Spun out of research at MIT, Luminus’ PhlatLight technology is an innovative and efficient way to maximize light emission from an LED. The name PhlatLight is derived from its underlying ph otonic lat tice structures. Photonic lattices are complex arrays of sub-wavelength microstructures in a solid dielectric material that can control and radically influence the propagation of light in different directions. This new engineering discipline, combining principles of electromagnetism with the concepts of solid-state physics, has numerous applications in optics and optoelectronics. Luminus uses complex mathematics to optimize the intricate photonic lattice patterns, and uses proprietary processing to embed them in the PhlatLight LEDs. The result is substantially more light in a narrower, collimated beam that is more easily collected and delivered to its target.

DxO Labs introduces DxO Lighting and DxO Noise technologies February 11, 2005
Paris, France - February 11, 2005 - DxO Labs, a software company developing image generation and image enhancement technologies, announces that it has added two major technology components to its DxO Technology Foundations: DxO Lighting and DxO Noise. “Our mission at DxO Labs is to transfer the latest results in applied mathematics academic research to technologies and solutions for our customers,” comments Frederic Guichard, DxO Labs Chief Scientist. “DxO Lighting and DxO Noise are good examples of our academic partnerships – both are based on recent academic breakthroughs which have been very quickly adapted to real life challenges to serve the imaging community.” The central character in both spots is a stylish young male who, armed with the Olympus m:robe, travels through a variety of different lifestyle scenarios inspiring cool, alternative dance moves in people you wouldn’t expect to be able to groove, including an elderly tourist couple, a little boy playing piñata at his birthday party, two bridesmaids and a couple of football tailgaters. “The DxO Technology Foundations are at the heart of all our imaging solutions,” adds Jerome Meniere, CEO of DxO Labs. “As a result, DxO Lighting and DxO Noise will soon be integrated in all our products and solutions – for digital camera and cameraphone vendors, mobile operators, as well as demanding photographers.”

LED lighting technology
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have a whole series of technical advantages over conventional bulbs, the most important being their activation speed and their long service life. If a trailing driver can notice the brake lights of the leading car sooner, that driver’s reaction time can be quickened, potentially resulting in a shorter stopping distance and/or avoiding an accident. LEDs can last an entire vehicle lifetime, consume up to 50 percent less energy and take up less space. Selected Audi models use LEDs for rear light functions (tail lights, brake lights, turn signal indicators), in the side turn indicators, and in daytime driving lights back to previous page Main index

Solar Lighting
The Solar Energy Research Facility (SERF) at NREL uses a light shelf on the south side for daylighting. It also has a small square windows on the east and west to minimize glare. Throughout the 1900s, use of the sun as a source of energy has evolved considerably. Early in the century, the sun was the primary source of interior light for buildings during the day. Eventually, however, the cost, convenience, and performance of electric lamps improved and the sun was displaced as our primary method of lighting building interiors. Attempts to use sunlight directly for interior lighting via lens collectors, reflective light-pipes, and fiber-optic bundles were the next step. The most recent technology, Hybrid solar lighting, collects sunlight and routs it through optical fibers into buildings where it is combined with electric light in "hybrid" light fixtures. Sensors keep the room at a steady lighting level by adjusting the electric lights based on the sunlight available. This new generation of solar lighting combines both electric and solar power. Hybrid solar lighting pipes sunlight directly to the light fixture and no energy conversions are necessary, therefore the process is much more efficient. It is currently being developed and tested by Oak Ridge National Laboratory in collaboration with the Department of Energy and several industry partners. Printable Version

LED Lighting - Energy Efficient Technology
We all know that we need to find a way to decrease our dependency upon foreign energy sources. Oil is currently a very critical energy source given the volatility in the Middle East and the extreme anti-American posture taken by bafoons such as the current leader of Venezuela. There is also a very real concern that the continued burning of carbon-based fuels may be accelerating global warming by adding to greenhouse gasses. LED lighting technology may provide a partial solutions.
LED Technology to the Rescue While the government and the energy companies wrestle with the supply-side issues, there is something that consumers can do to both lessen the overall demand for electricity and save themselves some money. LED technology uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to generate light much more efficiently than standard tungsten incandescent lighting. The vast majority of light bulbs in use today use a tungsten filament that is heated with electricity to produce light. The problem with tungsten lighting is that it is very inefficient. About 80% of the electricity consumed by tungsten lighting escapes as heat, which is why tungsten light bulb get so hot. LED lighting, also called solid state lighting, converts most of the electricity into light.
The result is that LED lights produce more light per watt of power consumed.
