Description
Life Sciences is an international journal publishing articles that emphasize the molecular, cellular, and functional basis of therapy.
The journal publishes full-length original research articles and mini-reviews. Articles that merely report observations are rarely accepted. Recommendations from the Declaration of Helsinki and/or NIH / EU guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals must be adhered to. All articles are rigorously peer reviewed.

The Life Sciences in the College bring together an extraordinary range of interests, from study of the smallest elements of life to perhaps the most remarkable creation of naturethe workings of the human mind.
Between the extremes in the Life Sciences are faculty whose overlapping interests often extend well beyond traditional academic departments: How are genes regulated so that an egg develops into an adult? How do people learn, associate, and think? How does the Los Angeles population affect our coastal marine ecology?
Faculty and students in the Life Sciences play an essential role in clarifying the mechanisms of life at the most fundamental level. An area as ecologically rich and diverse as Southern California is a natural laboratory for environmental physiologists, plant and animal ecologists, and evolutionary biologists. Scientists in biology, microbiology and molecular genetics, and molecular biology conduct research in cell and developmental biology. Psychologists, neurochemists, neurophysiologists, psychobiologists, and behavior biologists study the underlying mechanisms of behavior. Physiological scientists examine the regulation of human movement.

Welcome to the Biosciences Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
Our overall objective is to advance science and technology to better understand complex biological systems and their relationship with human health and the environment. We have significant expertise and special facilities in Mammalian Genetics and Genomics, Computational Biology, Biophysics and Biomedical Technologies, and Toxicology and Risk Analysis. We bring our collective expertise together with a number of ORNL-internal and external collaborators to focus on scientific challenges in modern biology. The division continues a 50-year legacy of important discoveries in Biology. Our programs are supported by a number of federal and non-federal agencies and institutions, such as the Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency, and several industrial partners. We have three core areas of research that frame our objectives in advancing biological science:
    Biology:
Building on ORNL's strong tradition of biological research to address today's challenges.

Fluorescent Nanoparticles Promise 300 Fold Boost in Sensitivity for Bioassay Systems
St. Petersburg, FL January 29, 2007, Life Sciences, Inc. announces the commercial availability of a selection of Dye-Doped Silica Nanoparticles (DDSNP) for use as reporters in improved bioanalytic systems. Each nanoparticle encapsulates thousands of dye molecules, producing extremely bright fluorescence for greater sensitivity.
Biomolecules can be conjugated to DDSNP through chemical binding, or covalent coupling. The particles can be surface functionalized with thiol (-SH), cyanate ester (-OCN), amino (-NH2) or carboxyl (-COOH) groups. Further surface modification can immobilize biotin, DNA, antibodies, enzymes, and other proteins on the nanoparticles.
Dye-Doped Silica Nanoparticles are available from Life Sciences, Inc. in research or production quantities. For more information, visit
