Magnetic levitation is the phenomenon in which two magnetic objects are repelled from each other in a vertical direction. The phenomenon, also known as MAGLEV, has long been recognized as having some important commercial applications. The most significant of these is the construction of MAGLEV trains which are propelled a few inches above a track at very high rates of speed.

Superconducting Levitation Superconductors expel magnetic field, and hence repel magnets. This repulsion can be stronger than gravity, which leads to levitation - the most fascinating manifestation of superconductivity. This web-page presents a few movies showing how the superconducting levitation works.

zJs=10 zJs=11 zJs=12 zJs=13 zc(5,'jsc',zJs,9999999,'') You are here: About Inventors Inventors Inventors ... Help Chapter 1: Background WHAT IS MAGLEV? Return Table of Contents Magnetic levitation (maglev) is a relatively new transportation technology in which noncontacting vehicles travel safely at speeds of 250 to 300 miles-per-hour or higher while suspended, guided, and propelled above a guideway by magnetic fields. The guideway is the physical structure along which maglev vehicles are levitated. Various guideway configurations, e.g., T-shaped, U-shaped, Y-shaped, and box-beam, made of steel, concrete, or aluminum, have been proposed. Figure 1 depicts the three primary functions basic to maglev technology: (1) levitation or suspension; (2) propulsion; and (3) guidance. In most current designs, magnetic forces are used to perform all three functions, although a nonmagnetic source of propulsion could be used. No consensus exists on an optimum design to perform each of the primary functions. Suspension Systems
The two principal means of levitation are illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. Electromagnetic suspension (EMS) is an attractive force levitation system whereby electromagnets on the vehicle interact with and are attracted to ferromagnetic rails on the guideway. EMS was made practical by advances in electronic control systems that maintain the air gap between vehicle and guideway, thus preventing contact.

(subject to appropriation) Program Purpose The magnetic levitation transportation technology deployment program encourages the development and construction of an operating transportation system employing magnetic levitation capable of safe use by the public at a speed in excess of 240 miles per hour. [1218] Funding Features Contract authority out of the Highway Account of the Highway Trust Fund is provided for fiscal years 1999-2001 totaling $60 million.
  • $55 million is available to fund preconstruction planning activities and design/construction of the selected project.
  • $5 million is available only for research and development grants related to low-speed superconductivity maglev technology for public transportation purposes in urban areas.
An authorization for an appropriation out of the Highway Account of the HTF is provided for an additional $950 million over fiscal years 2000-2003. These funds would have to be appropriated by the Congress before they would be available for expenditure. An eligible maglev project would also be eligible for other forms of financial assistance provided in Title 23, United States Code, and TEA-21, including loans, loan guarantees, and lines of credit. Magnetic Levitation
Challenge: Design a control system to levitate a 1" solid steel ball using an electromagnet. Description: The "maglev" experiment consists of an electromagnet encased in a rectangular enclosure. One electromagnet pole faces a black post upon which a 2.54 cm steel ball rests. The ball elevation from the post is measured using a sensor embedded in the post. The post is designed such that with the ball at rest on its surface it is 14mm from the face of the electromagnet. The purpose of the experiment is to design a controller that levitates the ball from the post and to track the ball position to a desired trajectory. The posts also provide repeatable initial conditions for control system performance evaluation. Difficulty: Undergraduate / Graduate Ready to buy?

Halbach Arrays
The maglev suspension technology developed for the Magtube design makes use of high-strength neodymium-iron-boron permanent magnets assembled in a configuration known as a Halbach array. A typical array of this type and its magnetic field are shown in the figure to the left.
The Repulsor
The active face of the vehicle array points downward, while the active face of the stationary track array points upward. The vehicle array is much larger in cross section than the track array to provide sufficient lift force while minimizing track costs. The Repulsor design produces in excess of three times the force of an equivalent mass of magnet material configured as simple dipoles of opposing polarity, and also confines the field to a much more localized area. The vertical and lateral forces produced by the Repulsor are illustrated below. With the vehicle and track arrays vertically aligned as shown in this figure, vertical force is maximized and lateral force is zero. As the lateral offset increases, the magnitude of the lateral force grows and tends to increase the offset even more, i.e. the Repulsor is laterally unstable.
Stabilization
To compensate for lateral instability, voice coil lateral stabilizers are mounted beneath the vehicle magnets to interact with the track magnets, resulting in the vehicle suspension shown in this illustration.

maglev launch Rockets of the future might be launched using a Magnetic Levitation (maglev) launch track similar to the test track recently built at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. A maglev system uses magnetic fields to levitate and accelerate a vehicle along a track. Similar systems are in use today as high-speed trains and some of the newer, radical-ride roller coasters. Maglev systems use high-strength electro-magnets to lift a vehicle a few inches above a track and then propel it forward with high acceleration. By using a meglev for launching, the spacecraft would be accelerated up to speeds of 600 mph (965 kph) without using any on-board fuel. When the spacecraft nears the end of the track, it could take off like an airplane and then switch to more conventional rocket engines to continue to orbit.

Abstract
Containerless melting of paraffin under a magnetic levitation condition has been performed by using a cryogen-free hybrid magnet and two kinds of laser furnaces. One is local irradiation of CO laser light at the top of the sample. The other is homogeneous irradiation of YAG laser light with a concave ring mirror. In the latter case, reduction of the Marangoni convection on the surface of the sample and the magnetic orientation of paraffin molecules were observed. The magnetic anisotropy of the spherical sample was confirmed by the measurement of magnetization and X-ray diffraction.
