Ziad Fazah speaks 58 languages ?
Ziad Fazah speaks 58 languages, or does he? Here he is interviewed on a Spanish television program and seems not to understand the questions he gets in Finnish, Farsi, Russian, Chinese and Greek. I have not done a multilanguage podcast in a while so here goes. I speak the following languages here French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, Swedish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Russian, Korean...and whoops I forgot Japanese. I will do the next podcasts entirely in Japanese. And if you are interested you can hear me at my JapaneseLingQ podcasts January 22, 2008 Permalink Comments (6) TrackBack (0)

LingQ is a killer app!
A report on LingQ was just posted on a site called Killer Startups. http://www.killerstartups.com /eCommerce/Lingqcom-Learn -Languages-Online/ This is an opportunity to make more people aware of LingQ. If you want to help LingQ, it would certainly help LingQ if you go this site (just click on the link) and then, at the site, click on the "Killers" button, with the number on it, on the top right hand side . Every time this button is clicked the number increases. A high number will increase the awareness of LingQ on the web, and make more people come to have a look at our site. If you would like to help us, please click on the link and then click on the "Killers" button. Many thanks if you do so, but do not feel any obligation.

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, owner of the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Hartford CT, has challenged the November vote by dealers to unionize. During the NLRB hearing, the tribe questioned why the ballots were printed only in English and why an election notice was only printed in one Chinese dialect. Both the tribe and the UAW called their own language and linguistics expert witnesses to testify. The Day.com reports that the tribe's expert witness , Alex Want argued that:
..many immigrants — including dealers at the casino — cannot read traditional written Chinese, but only “simplified written Chinese.” Tribal attorneys tried to establish that “traditionally written Chinese” is generally understood by highly educated members of the population, while UAW lawyers countered that it is now more common for people to have the ability to read both. Wang, who operates a language translation service with is wife in Minnesota, said the spoken word in the two variations of Chinese is exactly the same, but the written characters are different, and that's what poses a problem in the posting of the election notice.

The last blondes, or the blonde?
Just to add one indisputably linguistic point to make Mark's post about the blonde extinction legend eligible for our site (for this is indeed, let me remind you, Language Log, not a hairdressing industry magazine or the newsletter of the Board of Governors of the BBC), let me point out that the BBC also badly miswrote the opening line of its ridiculous story. " The last natural blondes will die out within 200 years, scientists believe " is what they wrote. But of course the death of the last few natural blondes is not the point. The Last Speaker of Eyak Has Died
I just heard on NPR that Marie Smith Jones, the last speaker of the indigenous Alaskan language Eyak, has died at 89. There's an AP article about her here : she was the last full-blooded Eyak; none of her numerous children learned Eyak because, as one of her daughters put it, they "grew up at a time when it was considered wrong to speak anything but English." Michael Krauss, a professor emeritus at the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the world's most prominent expert on Native Alaskan languages, worked some years ago with her and two of her relatives to compile a dictionary and grammar of her language, as well as a collection of Eyak stories. But for the past fifteen years, the AP quotes Krauss as saying, Jones was "the last of her kind...With her death, the Eyak language becomes extinct."
