linguist In the study of language, a linguist is usually someone who studies linguistics rather than someone who speaks several languages.

LINGUISTICS GLOSSARY
Some terms used in linguistics, language studies, language teaching and SLA research.
Based on V.J. Cook (1997), Inside Language The English Writing System (Arnold)
The aim is to present quick glosses, not watertight definitions.
Languages List Vivian Cook additive bilingualism: L2 learning that adds to the learner’s capabilities (Lambert). See subtractive adjacency pair: a pair of discourse moves that often go together, e.g. question and answer agreement Agreement consists of a change of form in one element of a sentence caused by a second element, to show their common number, gender etc, for example Subject Verb Agreement of number in English One swallow DOESN’T make a summer/Two swallows DON’T make a summer. allophone Allophones are alternative pronunciations of phonemes in a particular language that never affect the meaning. For example RP English has clear /l/ at the beginning of words such as lick , dark /l/ at the end of words such as kill , but these do not change the words if the wrong one is used; in Polish the two /l/s are different phonemes.

Scholarly Approach to Sign Language
Sign language is a language with its own syntax and grammar. I have tried, but been unable to, learn this syntax and grammar. Instead, I use sign language in a more "English" manner. For those who want to learn the true syntax and grammar of sign language, it is possible to learn the linguistics of sign language. Some colleges offer sign linguistics studies, and people have done research on sign linguistics.
Sign Linguistics Degree Programs
Gallaudet University offers both a master of arts and a doctorate's degree in sign linguistics through its Department of Linguistics. Students in these programs study both spoken and signed languages to gain an understanding of language. Another college known to offer sign language as part of its graduate linguistics studies is the University of New Mexico Department of Linguistics. Boston University has a graduate program in applied linguistics that has sign language as a specialization option.

What is general linguistics?
Lingua Volume 1 Pages 8-24 Abstract The empirical science of General Linguistics aims at tracing and defining the universal categories of speech-phenomena, as well as the factors on which these categories depend. It further studies the non-universal categories of speech-phenomena in their relations to the universal ones, especially and closely examining those universal factors that control their existence and changes. To arrive at an adequate definition of a category in its widest sense the linguistician combines a minute analysis of a language which be commands like his native tongue with a detailed study of comparative linguistics. General linguistics therefore, while establishing and studying as its chief object all that is systematic in speech and language, must of necessity extend the scope of its investigations to the diachronic phenomena as well.

There is a surprisingly large variety of linguistic resources on the Web already,
with plenty more no doubt to follow.
  • One can already, for instance, read the LINGUIST List on the Web.
  • One can now peruse the definitive bibliography of the late Dwight Bolinger prepared by his son and literary executor.
(It includes a lovely picture of Bolinger , in a characteristic pose.)
  • One can see the full text (and the attached bibliography) of the LSA Resolution on "Ebonics" from the recent Annual Meeting.
(I was there and can vouch that it was unanimous; in fact, we had a bit of trouble getting some folks to agree to call the press reports only "incorrect and demeaning", instead of far stronger language. But, amazingly, several hundred linguists in the same room managed to discuss, edit, and resoundingly approve the resolution in under an hour. No doubt the fact that it was almost dinner time helped.)
  • On Usenet, one can read sci.lang
