Laboratory Management and Services: Radioisotope and Analytical Chemistry Laboratory
Founded in the early '60s as a research facility, the Radioisotope and Analytical Chemistry Laboratory (RACL) has become a key provider of specialty services associated with commercial and government decommissioning and site remediation efforts. Our laboratories operate under NRC licenses and EPA permits. These qualifications allow RACL to receive virtually all types and quantities of radioactive materials. RACL maintains certification or approval through the Department of Energy's DOECAP Program, the Nuclear Procurement Issues Committee (NUPIC), and National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) through the state of Utah Department of Health and the state of Florida Department of Health.
    Radiochemistry Laboratory
The radiochemistry laboratory performs analyses on a wide range of matrices, such as soil, water, decommissioning debris, waste, and mixed waste samples. The laboratory also has secure facilities to accommodate classified samples (DOE-CRD). Radiochemical analyses are performed for alpha, beta, gamma, and X-ray emitting isotopes. Examples of recent projects include characterization of: Battelle Columbus TRU waste, Savannah River Site tank waste, and TRU-bearing filter media from Los Alamos National Laboratory.
    Analytical Chemistry Laboratory
The analytical chemistry laboratory offers a variety of techniques to characterize radioactive inorganic materials. These techniques include quantitation of elemental species by Inductively Coupled Plasma/Mass Spectroscopy, mercury analysis by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption, Ion Chromatography for the analysis of samples, and X-ray Diffraction to identify crystalline phases in compounds.

W. HEIDEN ASSOCIATES was an outgrowth of the founder's stand for highly accurate and meaningful laboratory results to support engineering and development projects. While working in industry and as a student he often found that various "standard methods" fell short of requirements and that the execution of procedures by laboratories was frequently less than complete, leading to misguided decisions and erroneous conclusions. R. W. Heiden Associates was started in 1987 to provide services that augment or supersede those already available. Three things you should know about our company.

TITLES DESCRIPTION # OF LAB PERIODS LAB MANUALS Unknown Amino Acid In this experiment, the student is given an "unknown" amino acid and asked to identify it using several procedures. This introduces several basic manipulative techniques of preparative chemistry and quantitative volumetric analysis including preparation and characterization of a derivative, recrystallization, determination of equivalent weight by using titration and determination of melting points. PDF Synthesis of Ferrocene This experiment involves the synthesis of ferrocene a relatively simple organometallic compound followed by preparation of a ferrocene derivative. In addition to execution of a reaction under an inert atmosphere, this experiment also introduces thin-layer chromatography as an analytical tool and both column-chromatography and sublimation as means of purification.

About the Laboratory
The Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC) Analytical Chemistry Laboratory and affiliated research departments provide chemical analysis, quality assurance, and environmental regulatory services. Laboratory services include high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography determinations of organic compounds, auditing of quantitative studies, and critical reviews of chromatographic raw data to determine the accuracy of compound identification. Gas chromatographs are equipped with five different types of detectors including mass spectrometry. Since the early 1950's, HARC has been engaged in the registration and reregistration of chemicals needed by the agricultural industry. Pesticide registration requires compliance with the EPA Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), and in particular, Section 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 160, Good Laboratory Practices. In recent years, HARC has successfully undergone rigorous facility inspections by the Quality Assurance personnel from most of the major chemical companies and also by the EPA. HARC conducts field, processing, and/or laboratory phases of magnitude of residue and metabolism studies. The Analytical Chemistry Laboratory personnel are experienced in methodologies used to analyze for compounds in difficult matrices.

Definition of Discipline Activities: Environmental Chemistry
The environmental chemistry discipline encompasses a number of related fields of chemistry and is complimentary to other disciplines offered by ELA such as environmental geology hydrogeology mining and remediation toxicology risk assessment microbiology and bioremediation, and environmental and metallurgical engineering . This discipline also is involved in corrosion studies and related failure analysis and in health and safety -related issues.
Environmental chemistry is essentially the science of identifying and measuring the amount of chemicals species in the environment, natural or manmade. It also includes the study of the fate and effects of these chemicals species in the environment. It includes such tasks as defining the intended use of analytical data, preparing sampling plans to satisfy the intended use, selecting appropriate analytical methods, advising on the collection of samples in the field, interpreting laboratory analytical results, and assuring the validity and legal defensibility of analytical results.
In determining fate and effects, it often involves an evaluation or organic and inorganic chemical reactions as well as physical processes such as volatilization, cosolvency effects, and soil adsorption. As such, it is a key ingredient in all other disciplines offered by ELA, such as hydrogeology, remediation, toxicology, risk assessment, bioremediation, corrosion studies and materials failure analysis, and in industrial health and safety-related issues. The broad area of environmental chemistry encompasses a number of related fields, including: analytical chemistry, chemical
