Can knowledge be managed? The words management and knowledge at first sight appear uneasy bedfellows. Knowledge is largely cognitive and highly personal, while management involves organisational processes. Many knowledge workers do not like to be managed in the traditional sense. However, knowledge is increasingly recognized as a crucial organisational resource, that gives market leverage. Its management is therefore too important to be left to chance. This briefing paper outlines what steps senior managers should take to leverage the knowledge in their organization. Momentum of Knowledge Management The last few years have seen a rapidly growing interest in the topic of knowledge management. 'Leveraging Knowledge for Sustainable Advantage' was the title of one of the first conferences (in 1995) that brought knowledge management onto the management agenda. From 1997 a surge of books, magazines and websites have come onto the scene. Today (2003) most large organizations have some form of knowledge management initiative. Many companies have created knowledge teams and appointed CKOs (Chief Knowledge Officers). Knowledge is firmly on the strategic agenda. Why Now?

What is Knowledge Management in Education?
Knowledge management is a set of practices that enable organizations to collect information and share what they know, leading to action that improves outcomes.
In our case, it can be teachers, school administrators, and learners telling each other stories, preserving what they know works or doesn’t work for one situation for use again in the future.

ISKME advances knowledge through research, innovation, and field building
The Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) is an independent, nonprofit research institute that helps schools, colleges, universities, and the organizations that support them expand their capacity to collect and share information, apply it to well-defined problems, and create human-centered, knowledge-driven environments focused on learning and success. ISKME achieves this goal by conducting social science research and evaluation, developing and sharing innovation, and facilitating knowledge sharing and field building:

It will probably feel good! On March 7th, 2002, I appeared on a panel at the Grantmakers for Effective Organizations Conference. As part of that presentation, I was asked to prepare this short introduction to the principles, lessons, questions, and resources of value to people considering nonprofit knowledge management initiatives.
I. Principles
Question: Based on your experience, what do you believe are the principles, or core truths, about successful knowledge sharing communities? If you were to offer advice to someone who was responsible for strengthening information sharing and knowledge building among people in their organization or network, what kind of wisdom would you offer to help ensure that their effort succeeds? (1) Know Thyself as an Organization Ignorance of an organization's or community's current needs and processes is the number one contributor to poorly conceived knowledge management initiatives. It's essential to map the existing assets and communication flow, because that is where the opportunities for improvement lie and where the barriers to new initiatives will be found. This kind of knowledge is particularly important in the case of technology centric knowledge initiatives.

13. Knowledge Management
May 2004
Introduction
Australian Government departments and agencies use a range of new technologies for information provision, service delivery and administration. These technologies provide opportunities for government to better manage knowledge within and between organisations to improve outcomes. This checklist suggests a number of issues that may be considered when managing knowledge in agencies. The items in the checklist are, however, not mandatory. This checklist is intended to be a guide to staff responsible for managing information and knowledge in agencies. IT managers may also find the checklist useful in dealing with contractors, or where this function is otherwise outsourced. This checklist focuses on non-technical issues. It should be noted that the checklist is not intended to be comprehensive. Rather, it highlights key issues for agencies. The checklist is iterative and draws on the expertise and experience of practitioners. The subject matter and issues are reviewed and updated to reflect developments. Comments about the checklist and suggestions for additional checkpoints can be directed to: Better Practice, Communication and IMSC Secretariat

Every company has multiple knowledge management requirements, often including content management, remote collaboration, and effective customer support. You ll need specific technologies or changes in processes and management practices in order to address those and other needs. But all the knowledge problems of business have a common element: human communication itself. If you can turn communication activities into a source of profit, productivity, and competitiveness — instead of a cost of doing business — then you have solved the most important problem of knowledge-driven businesses. Since 1992, the ACM Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (CIKM) has successfully brought together leading researchers and developers from the database, information retrieval, and knowledge management communities. The purpose of the conference is to identify challenging problems facing the development of future knowledge and information systems, and to shape future research directions through the publication of high quality, applied and theoretical research findings. In CIKM-06, we also will continue the tradition of encouraging collaboration among multiple areas. We encourage submissions of high quality papers on all topics in the general areas of databases information retrieval , and knowledge management . Papers that bridge across these areas are of special interest, and will be considered for a "Best Interdisciplinary Paper" award.

Architects of Knowledge: An Emerging Hybrid Profession for Educational Communications
Knowledge architecture is a nascent, hybrid field with significant potential as an innovative, cross-disciplinary design profession for 'value-added' technical communications and instructional technology. However, the emergence of a comprehensive, coherent, grounded theory and a corresponding problem-oriented, practice-based curriculum is progressing slowly. By contrast, other professional specialties for information architects, multi-media designers and software interface designers are better established. Scholars and practioners interested in fostering the development of knowledge architecture as a legitimate and evolving profession are at the forefront in defining the essential performance skills and academic training needed in the core subfields of information design, interactivity design, media design, and instructional design. Knowledge Management in Instructional Design. ERIC Digest.
Instructional designers engage in activities related to the planning and implementation of instructional and performance support solutions. Available tools and technologies influence the way in which instructional designers accomplish their tasks. Knowledge management represents a technology that is changing how instructional design professionals work. This article will review what instructional designers do, describe knowledge management, and indicate how knowledge management is influencing instructional design.
INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
This process is often poorly-structured and iterative, involving people from different backgrounds and areas of expertise. In an instructional design project, different kinds of resources and artifacts are created: proposals, memos, analyses, solution strategies, lesson plans, evaluation plans, media support for lessons, performance data, and so on. According to the International Board of Standards for Training, Performance and Instruction (Richey et al., 2000), ID is an engineering discipline with principles, rules, and heuristics, many of which are sensitive to local conditions (individual learners, specific settings and resources, learning cultures, and so on).

What is Knowledge Management?
Knowledge management is getting the right information to the right people at the right time, and helping people create knowledge and share and act upon information in ways that will measurably improve the performance of NASA and its partners. For NASA this means delivering the systems and services that will help our employees and partners get the information they need to make better decisions. There are three priority areas where KM systems and processes can help NASA's ability to deliver its missions:
  • To sustain NASA's knowledge across missions and generations
KM activities will identify and capture the information that exists across the Agency
To help people find, organize, and share the knowledge we already have

The intent of the KME is to provide a means for exchanging ideas about knowledge management, particularly as it relates to decision support. These may revolve around major themes expressed in the book Decision Support Systems: A Knowledge-Based Approach or additional themes identified by participants. The book's major themes include the following:
    1. Knowledge management is concerned with the representation and processing of knowledge by machines, people, organizations, and societies.
    2. A major purpose of knowledge management is to support the making of decisions.
    3. Decision making is a knowledge-intensive activity with knowledge as its raw material, work-in-process, and finished good.
    4. Knowledge is not monolithic, but is of several types (e.g., descriptive knowledge is distinct from procedural knowledge, and both are distinct from reasoning knowledge).
    5. There are multiple useful techniques for managing knowledge in the course of making a decision.
